This is one of the smart characteristics of Russian language actually even if it needs more time,but it is made the language as specific as it is.

so technically it's "past continuous" (i think some books call it the "story mode")

It's great that the topic came up I have to know the grammar so I can practice in speaking for past, present & future tense forms.

Indeed, the "finished vs. unfinished" explanation is really misleading and causes overuse of perfective verbs in the past and imperfective verbs in the future, contrary to actual usage

Perfect aspect expresses expreses one time event . Imperfect aspect can express one time event , can express multiple event , can express a process .It depends on the context Think that in Russian we have only two tenses ( perfect and imperfect aspect ) and you need to destribute all the English tenses between them

When I use Google Translate for “What did you say?” It translates it into “Что вы сказали?” But since it’s a completed action, shouldn’t it be, “Что вы насказали?” ?
@ssshhh_42384 жыл бұрын
No, Jason, we say 'что вы сказали?'. And this is the correct form. Additionally, the word 'насказали' doesn't exist. So, the prefix на- doesn't work with this verb.
@poohslosteyes2644 жыл бұрын
Сказать is the perfective form of говорить, and each verb has a different way to form their perfective. You just have to learn them, I'm afraid. The most common is the prefix по-, but you should never assume.

Keep trying. Lot's of kids have problems with that one. And some adults too. It's called картавость. Type it in KZbin, I'm pretty sure that there are lots of videos with the tips how to fight it.

How do I say for example "I have been studying Russian for five years"? Is it something like я изучал русский язык четыре года?
@poorlyeditedmemeswithnocon28943 жыл бұрын
Oh i of course meant four not five
@alexeygerasimov59763 жыл бұрын
Yeah, exactly. You also can use verb "учил"

One of the simple ways I distinguish two of the past tenses in Spanish, the Preterite & Imperfect, might be able to serve us here in Russian as well! Try associating actions in the Russian Perfective Aspect with a single dot ( . ); ["I drank"]; and in the Imperfective Aspect as a squiggly line ( ~ ); ["I was drinking"]; when conceptualizing and describing their relationship to each other within the scale of time in the past. Good luck, friends! :)

You're good, but speak too much English in your lessons and not enough Russian.
