More than half the time, huh? Suppose we randomly assign for each pair, which wins. What fractions of the triples (A,B,C) will fail to work that way? Well, exactly half I guess. Err.. there are 6 ways to linearly order 3 things, but only 2 ways to have them in a cycle. 6/(6+2)=3/4 . So, if you select the “who wins” randomly for each pair (as a fair coin flip) then the chance that the resulting combination is consistent rather than cyclic is 3/4, But if you condition on A>B and B>C , then there’s 50% of A>C (consistent) and 50% that C>A (a cycle). In actual “who would win” questions, it seems to me that probably an even larger fraction of the triples would be consistent/acyclic , and also even specifically among those where 1st beats 2nd and 2nd beats 3rd, that the probability that 1st beats 3rd would be higher than 50% . Though, this does lead me to the question: what is the minimum fraction of acyclic triples achievable for a large cast of characters? It is certainly possible to make all the triangles consistent, just by making the characters actually be linearly ordered, But, how far from that can you get when there is a large number of characters? A>B>C>A A>B>D>A And either B>C>DC

It’s funny seeing something I’ve had some moderate involvement in in the past get a big video in the community like this again, and especially one that’s mostly at its expense, but I can understand why I used to be one of the main people pushing to get the vs pages for Touhou updated and fixed, but understand there’s a lot of beaurocratic stuff that goes on behind the scenes that makes it difficult to fix errors like this and bring the profiles to where they’re supposed to be. Someone like Kogasa definitely isn’t supposed to have one of those god keys for instance, but then something like Marisa or Reimu’s profiles are much better upkept. It’s functionally only a handful of people trying to maintain an entire constantly updating franchise with constant pushback from others and difficulties dealing with moderation and such, so please keep that in mind haha I’ve mostly moved onto just making my own personal blogs about characters in order to avoid having to step through all the red tape

Ah yes VS Battles Wiki. I remember this. I also looked at a few of these before this stream happened, and even though my touhou knowledge is mostly limited to TH1-8, I still was memeing and laughing at what I was seeing. (Especially Yukari, should've read that one, attack potency section has something you didn't read before) Some funny information about this wiki: "Low Multiversal" gets into "Dimensional Tiering". They overcomplicate it. Simple explanation: higher dimension infinitely higher than lower dimension but the infinite is a higher infinite than normal infinite. (I still remember when they "revamped" the tiers that fall under this and shoehorned math concepts into it to make themselves look smart, which backfires when you see that the people that devised the change can't even agree on what tier a given thing falls under) Revisions of character stats (at least last I knew of) *requires* staff approval, despite also being a voting process. And yes, if a franchise ("verse") has no knowledgeable staff members, it cannot be revised. Have fun with that. (oh yeah and for more staff memes, some rules are different for them. See: Knowledgable members list, a list of knowledgeable members per "verse". Staff members have lower requirements to get put on the list) There are certain rules in place meant to prevent such high tiers coming from seemingly out of context things, specifically "outliers". If something is far above what is normally portrayed, it's supposed to be ignored. (this would throw out anything related to infinite speed for touhou, especially considering that the same game that has an "infinite sized" thing also has a plot involving extending the night to have enough time to solve the incident) And yes of course this wiki is full of double standards, you can already see some in this video with some things being marked as "hyperbole" while also allowing infinite speed to be a thing from characters saying "thing is infinite lol". But I've seen memes along the lines of throwing an *entire season of a cartoon* out as "Plot Induced Stupidity" (without even watching it) just to make the main character look better.

I just want to add that most of the current makers of the touhou vs wiki are aware of the amount of misconceptions and cherry pickings in there and planning to change most of the explanations soon and have been working on it for like a year. To be fair though about 1/4 of those powers (Youkai being able to turn to mist and such) have legit sources.

This reminds me of the time when I was still absorbed into reading OBD (Outskirts Battledome) Wiki. I remember when I use the wiki to evaluate the power ranking of Guilty Gear characters (the power level range of GG characters in the wiki was scattered extensively), and then I went to VS Battles Wiki for more reference and I was like "What?" as most characters just got Large Star Level with no explanation whatsoever. Btw, it was (don't know if it still is) said in the VS Battles Wiki that Giorno Giovanna loses to Monika in DDLC.

Ended up on a VSWiki thread about it, and... hoo boy, was that a trip. I've seen people argue infinities in multiples for character flight speeds. It has to be seen to be believed.

Not to mention when you're then comparing those infinities to one another. From the (relatively few) discussions I've read on the subject, I'm fairly convinced that the people behind it took one or two looks at how 'infinites' are compared in mathematics, and grossly misinterpreted what that means. Compare x^2 to x^3, where x goes to infinity. Here x^3 is the "greater infinity", because it approaches infinity (read: *the* infinity) faster. Infinity is the ceiling for a given metric to approach. If you go past that, you're better off just disregarding the concept of infinity altogether. Or, more practically: shifting it forward. If one object moves at an 'infinite' speed, and another moves faster, then the first one wasn't very infinite now was it? If you reach a multiple of infinity for a character's top speed, it doesn't mean they're really strong. It just means something went very wrong when you were estimating it.

Though if you want to use something like asymptotics like they are numbers (like with the x^2 vs x^3 thing) you could use the hyperreals I think? Not sure when that would be a useful description though. I guess one issue with trying to put a bunch of different strengths from different series under one umbrella, is that the things that authors write aren’t always… logically coherent?

Note that the same person who researched the series for this wiki was the same person who got banned from the same wiki for constantly getting aggressive at people during their bible chapter long debates (and i think calling everyone transphobic too or something) And later got banned from fandom for being involved with the touhou wiki raid (made the edit about keine and moukou being lesbos). Most attempts at downgrades to get stonewalled by bible chapters, and the knowledgeable staff who made the profiles are all gone. To be fair however, tsukumogami are basically gods who inhabit and represent specific objects in lore so thats not entirely wrong. Kogasa is just a lousy god of that umbrella.

still not sure why reaching Palanquin Ship is inf speed feat, given that happens in Gensokyo, a FINITE realm in contrast to infinitely vast Makai. Considering how hard Fuji, Kirb and others have fought for some of these scalings, the VSBW pages are still heavily outdated and unreliable. VSBW is a literal cesspool of transphobes, pedos and careless mods who only care to see their cool anime of the week be able to beat up Superman. If you’re genuinely interested in seeing how strong Touhou can get, then I encourage you to have a talk with Mad Dog of Fujiwara. She’s been working hard on an updated blog for every major Touhou character as well as working with a few others to make small vs blogs. Probably. Goku is the number 1 greatest pulls shit out of his ass to end up ontop character ever written, this is the dude who dies and comes back stronger. Oh you use some broken hax on him? He just breaks past it with pure stats or somehow adapts to it (???) because he's goku.

This is a bit of a surprise considering I'm one of (or was, got banned for telling a transphobe to off themselves) the main people doing VS stuff for Touhou. The pages are all super outdated and I've been working on fixing them for several years now, so anything on there now should be taken with a grain of salt. Regardless, very surreal so see this relatively niche hobby of mine covered like this, even though it hits the "oh god oh fuck everyone hates this hobby and hates me by extension" part of my anxiety. Hopefully the "fixed" profiles dropping a while from now will make more sense (or not, VS stuff is infamously dense to people not already in the community). Kogasa's page in particular is a good example of how bad things are lol, since some idiot (not me) decided that tsukumogami were the same as every other god, when that's not the case. They're just divine spirits shoved inside an object, and not all divine spirits were the same ones Rinnosuke was talking about when he brought up the gods making everything. It's hard to break down just how bad it actually is without getting into a lot of semantics but so much of it just makes me think "god, what the hell were we thinking?".
