I was never able to fully comprehend the phenomenon of touhou. It feels like something that had such a low chance of happening, that it could be compared to the big bang, an unlikely event that had unimaginable consequences. Because a simple bullet hell game turning into, without exaggeration, an internet empire sounds like a silly joke rather than something that actually happened. If people usually say "catching lightning in a bottle", then zun caught the god particle in a bottle.

Other notable things I think are worth mentioning that could color the series more: 1) Touhou was once a titan of doujinshi works. Being one of the most represented series in Comiket and even led to the creation of their own con, Reitaisai. 2) In EoSD, one of Cirno's attack patterns on Easy mode actually do not hit in front of her meaning you could stand right in her face and not die. This is showcased in the Cirno's Perfect Marh Class MV further showing her as dumb. 3) Touhou has been cited as one of Toby Fox's biggest inspirations when making Undertale. It's gotten to the point where both he and ZUN have collabed for a song in a Touhou rhythm game, remixing one song from each game together. There's a second one on the way as well.

7:09 I am a big fan of Inu Sakuya, which motivated me to conduct research on this character. I want to clarify that the information I share is not found on any wiki and is the result of my own investigation. Although the Inu Sakuya figure was manufactured by Gift in 2009, surprisingly, the company did not sell it in any of its stores. This figure was available on three occasions during that same year: at White Canvas (online), Akatsuki no Banket (presential), and Comic x Comic (presential). Inu Sakuya first appeared in 2005, not 2007. Many believe that the comic "Together with Inu Sakuya" is her first appearance, but this is a rumor originating from Danbooru. Someone in the community responded without sources that this comic was the first, which has led to confusion. Inu Sakuya did not appear at the stand set up to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the figures. The initial price of Inu Sakuya was 2000 yen, as her size is smaller than that of a normal figure, approximately 2/3 the size. If you have any questions about Inu Sakuya, feel free to ask me.

To give you an idea of how important ZUN's music is to the series, it's also the oldest known derivative work. It's not a doujin, it's not a fanart or a fangame, it's a MIDI arrangement... of Mystic Square's final boss theme, that dates to February 2000. He has definitely garnered following even before Windows, it's just that unlike Pokemon, which had enough publishing force to effectively revive a dying console, ZUN was just one man who underestimated the demand he'd face, so it was limited in scope (PC-98 was slowly getting replaced by Win 95 at that point). There's a reason the only known player with legit copies simply was around for that Comiket lol.

This video is great and so informative!! As a casual touhou fan since childhood, I learned some new things watching this video I didn’t know about. I would like to add something to the fanmade songs and MV section though. I was surprised there was no mention of the impact that It’s Always Cirno’s Turn/Kero 9 Destiny and the Teto Kasane fanmade remake of these songs titled Teto Territory had back in the day. Many characters and franchises received their own version of these parodies including Spongebob. Vocaloid and Utau fans alike recognize this as one of the most iconic songs to come from the vocal synth community and the most popular upload of the song on KZbin has over 19 million views currently. Teto Territory has become more popular due to Teto Kasane’s fanbase growing in recent years as well. I’m not sure how many people got into Touhou from it specifically, but it seems to be a widely known fact that the source material that inspired TT is from Touhou. Also, the original video that inspired K9D and It’s Always Cirno’s Turn came from Odenpa Love Girl, a parody video on NND that featured a fan-sung cover of Beloved Tomboyish Girl with silly lyrics that made Cirno sound like an idiot. I may have some of this information incorrect or out of order in the timeline, but I just wanted to mention this because it is significant to Touhou’s cultural impact on other fandoms outside of its own.

You should also mention how big touhou is in rhythm game scene. It's actually been a staple for every rhythm game to have a touhou category for music.

6:47 didn't see anyone mention it here but I'm pretty sure the reason for inu sakuya existing (instead of say neko sakuya or whatever) is the dialogue in Perfect Cherry Blossom. There are two instances of her being referred to as a dog ("dog of the devil" by Yuyuko, "dog meat" by Lyrica) in her scenario, and PCB predates the plush afaik. Also you probably should've included a short explanation for "doujin".

Zun is probably the best music composer currently alive. If not the best, at least the most well known top tier composer. The fact that he allowed his franchise and music to be built upon by hordes of talented fans has cemented him as an immortal gigachad. Mad respect.

75% of music artists I follow at least had something touhou related to their name. If we're not going to include the music artists that I followed post 2020. I'd say 90% did something related to touhou.

i feel like the en side of touhou community is quite small, cause most of the fan work and new contents still comes from jp and cn side, en just keeps importing them. which kinda gives me the feeling that en touhou is kinda dead

In the grand scheme of thing, anime looking stuff is still quite niche in the west... just check games sales per graphic style and see that anime looking games just sell on average 1/10 of other games.... even for atlus recently...

If I had a nickle for every time I discovered that a song I like was either inspired by, or a cover of a Touhou song, or at least published by a Touhou-adjacent record label, I'd have enough nickles to buy a good-quality meal (that's not too much money, but it is a lot of music!). Nowadays I've become somewhat familiar with the names of musicians and labels affiliated with Touhou stuff that I'm not surprised very often. Also, for reasons I don't quite understand, all of my most liked KZbin comments are on videos of Touhou music being played on various things it was never intended to be played on. I've never even played the games, and I could only name like 2-3 characters off the top of my head (don't know how well I could spell or pronounce them).

What in my opinion is important to say is that ZUN wanted to end the series with Imperishable Night, the eighth, but since it got this huge amount of popularity thanks to internet, he decided to not end the series and continue

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. One of the main reasons I find Touhou so fascinating is because Zun is so lenient and calm on things related to Touhou. That can lead to... weird things, to say the least, but I just do have so much respect for Zun who created the Touhou games not just for himself, but for anyone who finds an interest in the series. I don't like all of the music from Touhou (I know this to be an unpopular opinion, but I don't like "U.N. Owen was her?" that much) but there are still so many types of remixes of the original music that I know for sure I would like somewhere on the internet. I don't often like popular things, but for me Touhou is a "good" type of popular. For me personally, I love the music and lore from the games (I especially love the Shinto aesthetic). I love the fan creations as long as they aren't too "inappropriate", "provocative", or "fan-service-y". Another thing I have respect for Zun, is that despite the vast majority of Touhou characters being girls, he doesn't have fan-service in any of the games (to my knowledge). I don't know things too deeply about, as the series is more like a "pastime obsession" of mine, but I do plan to play at least a couple of the games one day (I can't buy the games, so I would have to find them free, most likely on Moriya Shrine). I don't think I've ever played danmaku games before, nor do I think I would be very good at it, but I at least want to try the Touhou games, to experience Zun's works with my own eyes. Sorry my comment seems so messy (I have autism and ADHD)! Thank you and God bless to anyone who has read this comment! With love, -Alankuhaa Samuelkah Fischum Eircaru PS Bad Apple is the main reason I know about Touhou. The first I remember watching Bad Apple was maybe around 2020 to 2021, but I most likely watched it when I was much younger though I just don't remember watching it from when I was younger. I was born in 2006, so I was born in-between the releases of Phantasmagoria of Flower View (2005) and Mountain of Faith (2007). Another interesting thing to note is that one of my favorite Japanese series of all time, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, is I think related to Touhou in that Zun and Ryukishi07 (the original creator of Higurashi) are friends in real life. Both Touhou and Higurashi also have the form of popularity that I like in terms that both of the game series are popular, but that it is a more "obscure popularity", in that you often have to do some digging to really know either of the series.

for me it started with night of nights, sakuya's rampage, bad apple, IOSYS, chirumiru, and ronald's insanity. Honestly thought it was just a bunch of this weird anime music video things at first Now I played almost all the games (including spinoffs and fangames), finished a few, have a playlist of all my favorite songs from the ZUN albums, own and read volumes 3-6 of Forbidden Scrollery, and own the Komeiji sister fumos

Honestly the impact of not only touhou memes but Japanese influence on internet culture is stratospherically high, not by having one ultra-popular meme but by having many different memes here and there that made their way into the West. But you could argue that either Germany or Finland are more influential because wojak and apu apustaja came from each respectively but apart from these they are fairly scuffed. Edit: do not get mad that I called wojack a German meme when it was originally drawn by a Polish person, doesn't matter because it got popular first on krautchan, a German site.
