I always thought the blades should be designed more for stabbing since that the main thing they do. If I was an assassin, I'd want a my hidden blade to have a rondel dagger style blade. Long, stiff, slender, narrow cross-section, reinforced tip, intended to leave a NASTY wound. Optimised for lethality... Imo, how they would have been designed if they had been real in our history.

The original blade in AC was basically quite like this, more of a stilletto. I really liked that when I first saw it because like many I've always hated seeing blades punch through plate and maille. Spikes though... That's how lone Assassins did kill fully armoured knights 'back in the day' because it pretty much was the only viable way most of the time. They definitely made them considerably more slashy over time (in game I mean) which irked me a lot, but 'cool animations' and what not....

@@CoffeeFiend1 Altair's hidden blade is nothing like that. Its basically a straight bar like every other hidden blade. The only thing that makes it any better at stabbing is that it is a bit more slender.

I think that the one benefit of the hidden blade is that even though you are not attacking with it in natural movements for fighting, the movements that are being used to assassinate people in the game seem like more natural movements like putting your arm around someone's shoulder etc. A regular knife wouldn't make that look as natural. That being said, you would need the blade to extend with great force only when necessary and retract very powerfully so that it doesn't get stuck when trying to retract it.
@ScreenTested
@ScreenTested Жыл бұрын
A issue I don't think i touched on in the video is the face that once the blade is extended the amount of actual blade that is usable is quite small meaning a small dagger would accomplish more, so a small knife is very concealable , along with that is what happens if the blade was to get stuck in something its attached to the forearm

@@ScreenTested I think, biggest problem with implementation of idea of spring loaded hidden blade was the blade. It should have been very long thin spike that can fit through fist if needed for brawling or that can shoot from hyperextended wrist position and punch through material using only power of it's spring. It would require more technological and bulky mechanism, but at least it would have benefit over knife as a specific tool.

@@ScreenTested I think that while everything you say is correct, you analyze the the weapon as "open combat" weapon. Hidden blade is not a weapon at all. It a _tool_ to assassinate people. It's VERY niche, and should be analyzed from that viewpoint. Situation A: "Social stealth" - you are in public, but not observed as such, for example - crowd. You employ non-threatening move, such as brushing someone while moving in crowd and stab with the blade in vulnerable area. Spring does all the work, you (your hand) don't move rapidly and suddenly, and do not draw an eye. You can carry spring knife in your sleeve, but you need to work to hide it, instead of split-second deploy/undeploy of hidden blade, that leaves you ostensibly with empty hand, and walking away before victim even reacts to sudden pain, "innocent". Works better when you dressed as a monk or a noble, and not a mercenary with half of city arsenal on him. Situation B: "Sneaking stealth". Best shown in games when you act as ambush predator from hiding place, but applicable to just sneaking up to someone. Hidden blade allows to stab and grab in exactly same motion (especially for old-school assassin with removed finger allowing to close the fist around the blade), to drag and hide body. If you do so with the knife, it takes one hand, making process a just a little bit slower, when every second counts. I think proper test would be making prop hidden blade that retracts when meets any resistance, and try to "stab and grab" a partner, and compare so similar process with a knife,
@Tikuros
@Tikuros Жыл бұрын
In the original design there are actually 2 different mechanisms. One that opens the blade and engages a locking mechanism and then a second one that unlocks the lock and pulls the blade back. The spring are never used for the actual stabbing, in the game, especially when the attack is slowed down, the blade always opens before the stab :)
@MostlyToys

The spring force is used in AC2 during the assassination of Jacopo di Pazzi. Ezio stabs a guard through the chin during a quick-time event.

@barrackobama2422 yes, it was a chin under a helmet. But regardless, it's very difficult to stab through skin. Even modern OTF knives can't give more than a small surface level cut. So whatever mechanism Ezio was using is extremely strong

I'd like to address the comment about the knife not locking and how if it had a lock you might as well use a fixed blade. Out the front automatic knives (OTF's) do lock. They have a pretty clever locking mechanism that keeps the blade from sliding back when stabbing and I'd recommend looking into it. It wouldn't make any sense without a lock.
@SliceyMcBreadmaker
@SliceyMcBreadmaker Жыл бұрын
OTF styled hidden blades are among the most popular design, honestly, the most famous likely being Rawice511. These are also probably the _easiest_ design to make, as the other famous maker, Imdeepainreborn, has gone on to make geared versions that extend much father than most OTF style blades, but are _much_ more complicated!

@grabeq2188 Жыл бұрын
Well ironically there's a lot you've got wrong there. I've been designing them as a hobby for years now and I can tell you, the only thing I would agree with is the slicing and stabbing power, that's it. In-game hidden blades aren't usually spring loaded like that. They have more like a mechanical type system. They basically act like a additional limb, like a part of your body that extends and retracts all the way while you tell them to by flexing your arm or wrist muscles, not shoot out like a crossbow when you push a button with the other hand and then have to reload it again manually. They stay locked in both positions so you can stab with full force or hid it in your sleeve without risk of it flying out when you swing your arm or something. Thats a huge benefit over the fixblade because, as I tested it with my own designs, you can basically extend, stab and retract it in like one point something second with no problem and you do not have to use your other hand for it, it just works by twisting a wrist, you literally can have anything in that hand while you do it, even hold another knife and you wont waste any time trying to put it back in its sheath, it hides itself. And that is another benefit. The "officially licensed" ones aren't even that faithful to the games. Even the one that you used was much larger in the game, it was thinner and had bevels on the whole blade, not only on the edges like the shitty replicas so of cource whey would cut better. It was actually so long that they had to hide its model in the assassin's arm so it wouldn't stick out from the back. Thats why the telescopic blades exist. You can pack much more blade length into the shorter housing while folded comparing to the single piece blades that would have to be short or stick out from your wrist wich is stupid and uncomfortable. The replicas fail even with that. Oh and you wouldn't be even near cutting your finger off as it activates when you flick your wrist so there is no risk of misfire and you literally move your hand out of the blades way. Yes, they did show one such accident in the game with the canonically first ever usage of it on the underside of the arm but it makes no sense from the mechanical point of view, they just had to show it as it was mentioned in the earlier games. Of course it's not fully possible to recreate it in the real world but there are many substitute variants that for example use a string connected to a finger for the activation motion I just mentioned. Thats why there is so much fun while building them. There are no instructions for it, you have to figure it out all by yourself if you want it to work like in the games. Two creators that make them the best of all are Imdeepain Reborn and Rawice Creations. They have their own YT channels and they sell their hidden blades online. Go check them out

As someone who has also designed and made a semi functional model you are 100% correct (Btw the only reason the model failed was because it was made entirely of legos and 1 rubber band and just wasnt strong enough to stay put together for enough cycles) I have, hidden blade design THAT WORKS uses a pull ring which pulls the blade AGAINST a resist spring (to prevent negilent discharge) and a steel wire that pulls the blade through a slide... Imagine a hamp powered otf knife or hidden blade using the open palm technique that doesnt pull out till you do... I hope you have good pull out games ladies and gents... Good night

If people wanted a photo of me, while they were asking I would click the safety off, then smack the blades buttons on my hips to launch the blades which surprised everyone as none knew I had them so even in costume people seemed unaware. It felt amazing to walk around a con feeling like I was in the games lol.

As a prelude--I didn't read any but the most recent comments, so there is that. First, you did a very credible job working up this video...including the mods, the tests and the analysis. Second, a couple of thoughts. An aluminum blade could be used--based on a T6 or 6066, both of which are used in knife making, or perhaps a san-mai blade, which likely could be forged to meet the size/weight parameters. You are correct that the fuller (the groove in the center) was for weight reduction. As for the use of the word GLAVE to describe the weapon...again, you are correct. Traditionally, the glave is a curved pole weapon, though, in some uses (poetry, notably), it was used to denote a short sword and occasionally a two-bladed "knife". One source seems to indicate KRULL sorta expanded that concept to the KRULL quint switchblade, fusing a throwing star with a boomerang. So, overall...I'd rank this video...well, a 10 out of 10.

A knife also weighs less then the hidden blade thing. Also, for assassins, they may want to discard their weapon to hid in the crowd. A knife would get less blood on their sleeve then the hidden blade and it's not tied to them. Lastly, throwing. An assassin would probably throw a weapon as a distraction to enable their escape if needed.

.....This reminds me of a gun that was issued during WWII which attached to a glove and went off when you punched someone. It can be hidden and really effective at killing people at close range. The problem in the blood from the victim gets all over the assassin royally blowing a person's cover. No matter how conceable you make the device or how effective it is, the fist gun and AC wrist will that problem since it is attached to the assasin, making to dispose of the murder weapon and a high likihood you'll to dispose of your clothes.

@@1stCallipostle I don't know about Valhalla or other Assassins Creed games newer than Odyssey, but...in the pre-Origins Assassins Creed there's literally zero weapons better than the hidden blade. Period. None of them can be used for an instant-kill-chain as easily as a hidden blade, though admittedly there are enemies in some games that are immune to that. If you use a hidden blade for regular attacks then you're using them wrong. In Origins and Odyssey, if I remember correctly, the hidden blade was still a superb weapon even in regular fight, though due to the more RPG mechanics it would lose its superiority if you cannot use it for, you know...assassination.

While I definitely agree that a knife is better for a fight, I also think that you glossed over the main function of the hidden blade. It's designed for assassination not direct combat. (Yes I do know that assassins use them in direct combat in the games but you can use an ice pick in combat as well. It's not designed for it but it can be used in that way.) The function of the hidden blade is to kill in a subtle way. Such as grasping someone's shoulder then firing it into their carotid artery. The design of the hidden blade allows you to reach into someone's personal space with limited resistance, while ensuring they don't rise their guard. However I did enjoy watching the video! It's funny that you said the Hidden Blade would do well if it was attached to a gauntlet considering that's precisely what Shad gave Daylen in Shadow of the Conqueror - a gauntlet with a Hidden Blade inside, so that Hidden Blade doesn't dislodge or get broken if it takes a hit, since it's inside the gauntlet. I'd love to see you test a replica of that gauntlet, and how you feel it improves the combat capabilities of the Hidden Blade considering it won't slide off your forearm, will be protected, and will likely have a heavier trigger considering those were things you mentioned.

Nice work I would add : with a knife, you can add more lever and energy, because you use your hand. While with this, you only use your forearm. It's not, by design, the most efficient way to use a weapon. But, hey, it's cool.

What are your thoughts on spring loaded knives like out the front or side opening automatic pocket knives? Not allowed in Australia but the ones I own like the microtech ultratech are quite safe and would be hard pressed to go off accidentally

Imo, folding switchblades are kinda dumb, you can get it open just as fast manually, but otf switchblades are great, you can open and use it without adjusting your grip, there's zero risk of cutting yourself closing them, and they're less likely to open by themselves than some folders

Oh, and it's usually safer to have a double edge otf than a double edged folder because both edges are covered when the otf is closed

The main problem is the replica toys are just that, toys. The mechanics are not the same. It’s like comparing a glock to a nerf gun.

I noticed you used quite a few different camera angles/scenes and recalled that in the "Lets TALK about 2023" video you said this often was more effort than it was worth due to editing and setup. Have you found a way to make this easier? was it more due to having some spare time? did you just believe it was worth it? or am i imagining things. Great video btw.

Nope still just as much work For multiple cameras etc Its just I can justify putting that type of effort into a video like this instead of a meme review or something like that haha.

Honestly they wrist blade would be effective as an emergency fall back option. For example if someone disarmed you and you might not have time to reach down for a sheave. Or if they were preforming a take down that would make using a longer weapon less maneuverable. It's use as a primary weapon is limited but an little unexpected plan c can be very deadly. Especially if you were a grappler by trade

The book describes two different kinds of hidden blades, one with a spring lock mechanism and one with a slide block mechanism.

In Assassin's Creed Brotherhood multiplayer, there is one character that does have a type of hidden blade on the top of her wrist instead of the bottom, and it folds instead of extending...

It's a pair of blades I think in that game. One was attached, one wasn't? Either way, the Dirk was flat better so I didn't use them much

When entering a party with an important official, knifes and daggers would be confiscated, but bracers wouldn't, thus hidden blade is superior.

I'm here from the vid about this on Shads channel. Nice take btw... This type of weapon has always been a joke. A long needle would likely be far more effective.

Little bit of Assassin’s Creed lore. Hidden blades were actually originally meant to be worn on the top of the wrist. In the games lore, it’s explained that Bayek in AC origins wore it incorrectly on the underside of his wrist and then it cut his finger off upon deployment of the blade. Afterwards they decided to make a “commitment” by cutting off their finger. TLDR; hidden blades were designed to be used like Tyranth was using it, on the top of the wrist and because of “reasons” people just kept using it incorrectly with the blade on the underside of the wrist, despite them having to cut off their own finger to use it lol

Id like to say a few things, also i have a hudden blade mechanism i believe youd like. I didnt make the design but i can print it our and send it to you for review! 1, thwt hidden blade isnt designed to be a real weapon. All hidden blades other than the first hidden blade (i believe, that one is weird) are duel action and seem to need your hand up and out of the way 2, most hidden blades arent thrown forward with just a spring. Altier for example was a sissor jack mechenism and alot of following hidden blades are either a system using gears or an otf mechanism 3, yes, hidden blades arent meant for combat. They are meant to always have a weapon on you to easily and discretly deploy and hide when killing someone. And last, most hidden blades do attatch to a gauntlet to be much more secure

i also think for the idea of the hidden blade its important to include the bracers they always mount them to. its integral to the ergonomics

Seems to me it would work a lot better without the spring, just a simple latch and catch so you manually slide it foward and lock it in position would be almost as fast as a spring load without the con's and keep the concealed specialist purpose of the weapon
