In all the AC games, I never felt guilty for killing my enemies. But in AC1, I felt Altair's regret, confusion, and anger after killing each target. It's like I was him! That alone makes this game a masterpiece. It made me think about my actions. No other game in the series is able to recreate that feeling after AC1.

I don't mean it touches on the same philosophical arguments, but it touches on Basim's confusion and the pain within him while also giving the best feeling of being a member of the Hidden Ones/Brotherhood.

There was no regret, if there was true regret he would’ve stopped, altair was doing the right thing in his mind which was killing tyrants that abused power and exploited people, in the end the real one who was exploiting the brotherhood of assassins was al mualim.

I think the most upsetting thing to me about AC1 being referred to as a tech demo for AC2 so often is that almost everything we love about assassin's creed came from, well, Assassin's Creed. The rich philosophical war between Templars and the Assassins, the drip feeding of an ancient civilisation that came before, the modern day, the animus, parkour, gritty combat, social stealth, leap of faiths, the tenants of the creed, viewpoints, the brotherhood etc, etc. Ubisoft's biggest flaw with the franchise was a failure to evolve upon most of these aspects and expand them, especially the story elements and the brotherhood, instead they used it less and less and diluted the initial ideals, story elements and gameplay ideas provided by the original assassin's creed.

This is why the failure of AC Unity stings. I finally had a full play through of AC1 during the pandemic. It broke my heart as I could now see how Unity was supposed to be the first step in crystallizing all the various mechanics introduced in AC1 that were limited due to tech.But they fumbled it and as a result we've never been able to get an AC game that realises the full potential of the original AC formula.

YESS. Part of why I love AC1 is that it gets to the point. As soon as you enter a city, you feel like you're on a mission to collect information and execute your target. There's just the right amount of tenseness to each city. I may calmly walk the streets or the rooftops but I don't feel like I'm dilly-dallying. Altair is where he is with purpose. I'm replaying Odyssey these past few weeks and it's just like: "Oh, hey, welcome to Argolis. There's a Cult of Kosmos member two streets over if you want to stop by and kill him. You know? The guy? The guy you got a letter revealing the identity of *hours* ago? There was a paragraph saying what he's about? You don't remember the paragraph? Well, anyway. He will have no voice lines, no cutscenes showing why he has to die, no dedicated mission, and no memory corridor. As soon as he's dead you can go back to exploring random forts and outcroppings. Good luck!"

bro I recently played the game again for the third time and I swear it's literally one of the best AC games. People say that the gameplay is repetitive and dated, but will still play odyssey and valhalla. The thematic and narrative importance is often forgotten. Like the whole game has this vibe and aura about it that is hard to explain. I love how whatever you do in the game feeds into the point that you are an assassin and you feel like it when you play the game. Every small action feeds into the story and the world compliments this as well. The world doesn't feel empty because Altair interacts with it, and the cities become a sort of tool that Altair uses in his missions. I remember falling in love with this franchise as a kid because of this game, because of the mystique. It's true that only the OG's will remember this game. Nostalgia aside, its one of the best games I've played, and there probably won't be anything else like it.

I've been a fan of the AC franchise since 2009 when AC2 released, but I've only experienced AC1 many years after, probably around 2015 or so. Even after playing so many games that should feel more modern and better, AC1 completely blew my mind up. It's such a great experience, and realizing this is the first game of the franchise, the pioneer of a concept that I'm obsessed about, it's truly a remarkable work from OG Ubisoft. The game surely didn't age well in some aspects, as you mentioned throughout the video, but as a whole, I still consider it one of the best AC games, and it's probably something that's never gonna change, doesn't matter how old and outdated it is.

YES. All of this. I played AC1 on release, and I've replayed it a few times (not recently enough -- I need to get to it again). I was a game dev major in college and I wrote my thesis on this game -- specifically on how it used the Animus as a frame to closely integrate the gameplay mechanics (especially the fail state) into the story in an immersive way and why that was important. Whatever it's flaws, AC1 was truly special and deserves a place in video game history, and I'm not saying that "fan-boyishly" and I'm not using hyperbole -- It's legitimately that important.

Awesome review. After Black Flag and Revelations, AC 1 is my 3rd favorite AC game. The atmosphere AC 1 is something which all the AC games (including the Ezio trilogy) were never able to give again. Setting a game when the Crusades were happening in the Middle East, an era not explored at all in video games was a genius idea to set the story of AC 1 in. Also, the lore AC 1 had is also unmatched. The way it presented itself is perhaps what makes me adore it the most. You don't get that same feeling in any other AC games. The way AC 1 explored the AC brotherhood is the most intriguing part and how it relates with Altair's character. It's not perfect but I still wished that AC games presented themselves in this way instead of the absolute nonsense we get in AC games nowadays. And yeah, parkour in AC 1 is better than all the RPG games and AC Mirage as well. You can do sick parkour in AC 1 once you get the hang of the control. The game doesn't treat you as a baby where you climb by holding one button. You have to carefully see what options you have to climb and jump to make sure your flow of parkour is maintained. In short, AC 1 is a great game. Not the best game as it have some big flaws too but a great game none the less.

I can so feel many of the points you mention in your video like Altair being a Weapon wielded by his master, his focus on his task, freedom on the roofs etc. One of the moments that fascinates me is his preparation before the actual assassination when he spends the time at the Assassin's Bureau, that shows his focus and concentration. I do enjoy the later games (just have played up to ACR so far) but this game just feels pure imo.

As a kid, AC1 was a one-and-done game for me, I beat it and never cared for it. Replaying it later in my life, however, allowed me to see why its so good. There are obvious reasons, which anyone who likes this game already won't need to hear, but what I personally enjoy in this game is the writing. Yeah maybe the voice acting isn't that good, but what I truly like is that every line counts. Every line was written with clear intent. Short, precise and to the point, yet some also pack much more implications than they spell out (my favorite example is Al Mualim's "Illusions, all of them!" speech and Vidic alluding to Those who came before). A lot of games nowadays have a lot of pointless banter speech for some reason, and it makes me not care or pay attention, but when I reexperience AC1 I pay attention and listen to every word coming my way.

I wish we could see an Assassin's Creed 1 remake. The music in this game was brilliant. One notable example is the track"The Buraeu" which encapsulates the overall tone and ambience of this premise, which mixes sci-fi and historical fiction. I am actually currently reading the novel adaptation of the game, titled Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade, which in my opinion, greatly enhances the narrative of the game by delving into the internal monologues and thoughts of Altiar, as well as explore a bit of his backstory and childhood years before the events of AC 1, among other things.

I grew up loving Assassin's Creed 1. The game was so philosophical and truly showed what the future games lacking. Understanding the true nature of the Assassin-Templar war and how grey it actually is, this is why the atmosphere and color grading were grey. It was sad they were remove after 2. Altair's path to redemption after his arrogance cause him to break all 3 tenets leads him to become the legendary Assassin in history.

AC 4 for example was basically a pirates of the caribbean game with AC 3 gameplay... and while most of the sequels to AC 1 are good games they are not what assassin's creed should be imo. The only true Assassin's Creed is the very first one. But IGN didn't understand the first game at all and the poor reception for it ensured that my favorite game of the series will remain stuck doing dust in the old ps3 system, and will most likely never get a remake or remaster and probably not even a port for modern consoles. Despite its age, the game's environment is so immersive. The parkour animations are incredibly lifelike compared to the Ezio trilogy, in my opinion. Once you master parkour in the game, it becomes quite addictive. I argue that AC1's story was much better than Ezio's games. AC2 was my favorite game in the series until I played the first game. I never thought in my life that a game from 2007 would become my all-time favorite game. There are only a handful of games that I love and will defend for my entire life, and AC 1 is one of them. 💞

But AC1 blew me away, the parkour feels smoother than Ezio (also ezio stumbles al the time at angled landing it annoys me to no ends also ezio feels platick), the combat is gritty and satisfying/quick animationwise (also the counter window/dodge window is much tighter and is different for different weapons) , weapons have different balance and stylish dodge animation. i fell in love, i could just free roam parkouring/combating for hours and never get bored. the map is littered with Templar miniboss and "investigation" so it never feels like a waste and you are always progressing towards your next target. yeah, it is my fav AC in terms of animation, parkour, combat, free roam and tgese are the aspects i care most about . love this

Gonna post a comment that I did on one of Leo's vids like 3 yrs ago; Ik you don’t do ac related stuff anymore but i gotta rant and idk where to except here. So feel no obligation to respond or acknowledge this if you do read this. I love AC2 and it’s probably one of my favourite games but I really don’t like what they did with the brotherhood. AC1 had this very delicate and precise sense of mystery to it that actually left you questioning things. For example the whole garden of eden behind masyaf castle and the stories revolving around it. The assassins felt like an actual dangerous cult. You weren’t completely sure whether you were even the good guys. There was an incredible sense of mystery surrounding the apple of eden. And most importantly than anything, the protagonist wasn’t the one incharge. Altair was a prodigy, yes, but he wasn’t almualim. In ac2 the sense of power that comes with simply being an assassin was lost. And with ACB, you played as the mentor which killed the sense if mystery even more. With ACR set in a new area, you were able to get that feeling of mystery back to a small extent but it wasn’t the same. In AC1 you could feel the political tension in cities and between assassins templars and the other party(the king or something idr, like who the main templar antagonist was manipulating [I was talking abt Robert DeSable].)

They probably did it to avoid controversey, remember this game came out in 2007 when the War on Terror was at full force, and when you really think about it, the Assassin's and their motives in AC1 is basically terrorism or at least the way the American public viewed them as at the time, so giving Altair an arabic accent probably wouldn't sit well with the American audience at the time.

Thank you for this, the original Assassin's Creed is one of my favourite games and is so overlooked by many. I actually love simplicity and repetitiveness. These are not flaws but a concious gamedesign choice that can be done right with the proper gameplay loop. AC2 might be more varied, dynamic and polished in comparison to the first game. However it also feels more linear, scripted, gimmicky and overall less focused (reason why I love Bonfire dlc and side assassinations more than the mane sequences). I think AC1 was a very niche game in concept and the sequel dumbed down a lot of its aspects in order to successfully streamline the games, including combat and climbing (yes I am a slow climbing advocate). Ironically a similar change as later with the AC "rpgs", just less divisive because only one game was released at the time. Many series in general go through this as they evolve and get more popular, like The Witcher for example. Which is why I think most AAA titles feel so samey and sanitized, but it's a whole other beast to tackle. It feels like Unity (and kind of Origins) was an atempt at a compromise between AC1's gamedesign philosophy and AC2 onwards' formula. I would have loved to see this developped further. My ideal Assassin's Creed would have taken more inspiration from Hitman or Dishonored's missions structures rather than whatever every Ubisoft open worlds do since Far Cry 3 or something.

I think Mirage is the closest to bringing that feeling back, but AC1 deserves a bit more love, in my opinion.

it really is so unique

They should remake this game imo, not just remaster but complete remake, AC 1 is pretty much only game that has actual Assassins and Templars, in rest of games assassins and Templars are just inserted to fit, but this game showing it’s age bad, it’s just not fun to play now, AC 1 deserves better

5:50 the OG staff of Ubisoft left a long time ago. I am not sure when, somebody can feel free to google it. But the new Ubishit staff has 0 chance to come to this height of engineering. The best they can do is use the tools the old generation left behind for them to spew out unoptimizied poorly written garbage the interns came up with.

"If you have to avoid a mechanic, it's not a good one" death is a mechanic in video games...

crazy thing to comment

@TheSpaniardAssassin I find the comment in reference to the AC1s parkour system to be crazy. The new ACs (I would argue even Unity's) is just press forward to wall climb. The fact AC1 encouraged players to strategize and not blindly use a mechanic actually improves engagement. It is the antithesis of whatever that person you quoted is talking about
@WideOldDan3 ай бұрын
My point is both are states of failure and we use other mechanics to avoid them

Ironic that the "tech demo/proof of concept" is peak Assassin's Creed in terms of gameplay alone. Then the story bolsters the gameplay. I may love some other AC games more, but AC 1 feels like the "Assassin's Creed" to me. It knew what it wanted and achieved it. That is what makes me sad about Unity (I hated at first but now love it). Assassin's creed lost its identity, but Unity tried to revitalize it. Technical issues still hold the game back at times, but Unity feels like the last AC game we actually received. It brought back AC 1 parkour down and you played as... an Assassin😱Not a native, pirate, Templar, mercenary or Viking but an Assassin. I am glad I finally enjoy AC Unity. Replay or try AC 1 for yourself. It is 4k 60fps on series X. Runs better than Altair himself. Trippy seeing AC looking so crisp.

You should be handling the series. ubisoft should be hiring you to stair the ship and keep it on track you content is what true fans think I been a fan since the first game. valhala was the first one i couldn't finish and killed the series for me.

for me though assassins creed 1 is decent but still really average game to play due to it's repetitive gameplay style....

@@TheSpaniardAssassin Eep...ofc..its the first game with thsi formula , but to give u a bit of credit on that half bias take u said , I THINK dont quote me on THAT but AC 1 is the ONLY AC or at least ONLY CLASSIC AC with Diagonal Back Ejects , no ??
@btchiaintkidding78372 ай бұрын
Altair /AC1 side ejects have better range/cover more distance than Ezio games. you can be far and still land on top of the platform with a side eject, with ezio you got to be really close and even then if you press side eject a bit too early you might not land on top of the platform. Ezio scales faster with each game. But "Stumbles" waay more often than Altair if you land at odd angles otherwise in terms of parkour everything is same. edit: what do you mean diagonal back eject ? you mean side ejects ?
@ngnevergone75872 ай бұрын
@@btchiaintkidding7837 Thanks for the informations . No , when I say diagonal ejects I dont mean side ejects , I mean exactly THAT when u do an eject , not behind , not to the side but diagonally on ur righ on ur left . It seems that THIS is oonly working on AC 1

Assassins Creed 1. I truly hope that Assassins Creed One is getting a graphical remake. They should just work on the graphics and add more medieval arming sword options, I would love to use a beautiful Crusader arming sword as Altair. I don't care one bit about the story outside of history/the animus, I just want the historical content. My top ACs are 1,2,Brotherhood and Unity. Revelations setting of Constantinople was superb, but the half arsed npc design ( copy and paste potato face) really placed that game on the back burner for me. (Revelations Desmond looked like such a doofus.) But without a shadow of a doubt my favourite Assassin's Creed of all time still remains Assassins Creed one. The setting of the Levant is such a climax in our world's history, the numerous cultures and world views that all convened ,coexisted and cooperated at this crossroads were immense. Medieval, in cities that are policed by soldiers , guards and police forces , shows exactly why stealth and assassins were a reality/necessity. Those settings are superb. With iconic cities such as Arce,Demascus and the centre of the world Jerusalem , the world in which you find yourself is so rich in history, culture and importance, filled with peoples and packed, lively streets. In a medieval setting using European arming swords, ME shamsiers , short sword, throwing knives and your iconic hidden blade , makes the close quarters melee combat the best there ever was. I adored the melee combat in these older AC games, such beautiful, complex, flowing moves that were so elegant and deadly and AC 1 still has the best / most beautiful melee movesets of all the games. You start with just your hidden blade, then slowly as you develop your skills and rank up you gain access to more and more weapons until you are armed with some of the most elegant and deadly weapons of the middle ages. You only use a one handed weapon, thus only a single handed or double handed weapon, no Sword+dagger or sword + shield or two sword combo and that is melee perfection to me. An arming sword in the hand and nothing in the other. In the remake If they added some moves that included damaging the enemy with your hidden blade whilst in a melee duel using your sword, like when you fight janissaries in AC Revelations then it will be pure melee perfection. The stealth in AC 1 is brilliant, I love that you walk around like a praying monk in robes to blend into the city, even when crowds are unavailable, but if you walk as a praying monk, alone into a restricted area, the guards will still chase you away and become suspicious. It is so good. In Unity you use a corner to remain out of sight, assassinating an enemy around a corner you kill the target and you neatly place the body against the wall you were hiding against also out of sight. I REALLY hope this will be present in AC 1s remake. Altair is by far the most intriguing and capable Assassin to me , he is strong, calculating, mysterious and in my opinion the most skilled assassin thus far. With the most beautiful Assassin armour, on par with the Epic Templar armour of the horrendous Rouge game. You sit on benches to blend into the crowd, or you join a group of monks in prayer allowing you to vanish from your pursuers. The way the factions in the game are depicted is good, Unlike the propaganda of the repulsive woke cult of today , they don’t portray the Christian Crusaders as the villains. Although they did portray the Crusader held territories as cold, bleak, dilapidated and run down where the Muslim areas are vibrant and more appealing which I do not agree with. Especially the Hospitallar quarters which in reality were some of the cleanest and most clinical areas in the entire Levant since they specialised in surgery and the healing and recuperation of all injured / sickly people , be it wounded crusader knights or Muslim/Christian/Jewish villagers sharing the same cities. The Crusaders specialised in the construction of wells and water ways / aqueducts that facilitated the flow of fresh , clean water into controlled cities and waste water out of these cities. (Although I can’t recall if Acre was under siege at the time in game, if that is the case, that could explain the city's dilapidated state.) But be that as it may, you still fight against the Crusaders as well as the invasive Muslims. At the end they show that the enemy is not the Templar Knights , but instead the corrupt ,evil leaders on both sides of the conflict. I love that they correctly show that both factions have evil and corrupt figure heads that you have to assassinate and in turn both factions have good honourable leaders that bring so much good to the world such as King Richard the Lionheart and Saladin. I love that by the end of the game, you side with the Leader of the Templars (King Richard the Lionheart) and in turn stop/assassinate the leader of the Assassins (Al-Mualim). This game was truly visionary. The toughest enemies to fight are the Great helm wearing Templar Knights and rightly so. These special forces of their time were a force to be reckoned with and even when you use all your combat skill and tricks… you still get a proper run for your money when challenging a Templar Knight to a duel. I don't want open world, I don't want guns and I loathe MYTHOLOGICAL / MAGICAL shit looking at you AC Viking hype train. Keep it 100% Historical. I loved that AC1 gave tiny hints about God Three in One's existence/presence but that was never the focus. I want an AC with the depth and realism similar to Red dead Redemption but in a Medieval/Ancient setting. I can’t stress how much I love AC one and I can’t wait to play it again when the remake comes out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6isZId5odabhdU kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2PanZmwjc2ZaZo

Around 8:05, when you talk about detached side quests, it makes me curious on if you’ve played any Yakuza/Like a Dragon games? The side quests in those games are exactly what you described, completely detached from the story and slightly immersion-breaking, but I think they run with that idea and really make it work. Have you played any of those games, and if so what do you think of their side quests?? I really liked this video, absolutely love this game!
