Hes like a mixture of both Templar and Assassin, compassionate in character, yet brutal in action. The compassion comes from the way his father taught him how to fight, and think, while not exposing the creed Im sure Edward taught Haytham with it in mind so that when he did expose the creed to Haytham he would have had a more 'geared-to' response. Even if he was to think for himself like his father had taught. And his experience with Birch, who brought him into the order. Those experiences led Haytham to become the calculated killer that he was. I havnt read any of the books just the games, so videos are the only information im going off of in this comment. (This is going off of the perspective that Assassins are Compassionate and Merciful)

So i have to also agree with Fizhy because imo it didn't look like Haytham was trying and throughout the game you notice Haytham is getting more and more attached to connor which made it hard on him to kill connor but it also looked like he was trying to both force and prevent himself from killing him.

I think haytham did let him kill him but I think it was because he gave connor the big speech about how the templars will always rise even if you pick off any one of them. He said about all they need is for the world to stay as it is because the templars always come out on top, even if Haytham himself dies. I think that's why he let connor kill him, to prove to him that even if his father dies, it won't stop his order from continuing on. And I don't think he could bring himself to kill his own son

Hathem did let Connor kill him. Haythem was attached to his son, but was also brainwashed by the Templars from a young age, since haythem is a man of his word and he swore to protect the creed until his death, he let Charles escape so he can die , hence not betraying the creed and his word. Haythem said in his diary that he knows he's a fool for staying a templar even after he discovered that they are the ones who killed his father, so he kinda wanted Connor to "win". You're welcome :)

All in all I think Haytham was tired, he was tired of playing the Templar vs Assassin game. He was, as he stated in the book, always in pain from the old wound Lucio gave him and haunted by his past. He had been through hell and back. But ultimately I think he let Connor kill him because he loved his son and was actually quite proud of him and wasn’t going to kill his own child. Haytham was actually a good man deep down, I think he really regretted the fact he wasn’t there for Connor in his youth. If you have played AC III but haven’t read Forsaken, you really should it’s an amazing book. Out of all the AC characters Haytham is my all time favorite despite the fact he is a Templar.

In my opinion, Haytham always wanted to turn Connor onto the templar side in order to be closer to his son. But Haytham knew that Connor wouldn't betray the creed so he tried to kill him. But when he was about to deal the killing blow he just stopped because he wouldn't kill his son. And if I remember corectly Haytham actually said something like this "Even without me the Templar order will still be unstoppable" (or somethin' like that, can'r rly remeber, it has been 5 years, dammit.) so he choose to let Connor live and let the templars do their thing being unstopable. Your point is really good, I have been thinking about this since I bought the book Forsaken.

You may do with what you will.” We missed a lot, and I mean a LOT of Haytham’s life both before he’s introduced to us in AC3, and the switch to Connor. A lot of people don’t know for example, that it was Haytham who freed Connor from the noose at his execution in NY with a thrown knife, not the Assassins. In either case, Haytham got to have a dad for a least a portion of his life. Connor never got anything from Haytham and I’m sure that weighed on him.

I think it boils down to the simple fact, that Haytham, in his own way, loved his son. Haven't read any of the books, so a lot of this is what I'm inferring from the games. He must've felt guilty for never being around, for never teaching his son what he thought was right. Connor joining the Brotherhood must've felt like a personal failure on Haytham's part. He always wanted for his son to join him. Haytham wasn't a Templar because he believed in those values, but because he was a pragmatist, and in his views and experience, the Templar's were a more effective way to make the world a better place, or at the very least, the lesser evil. Haytham has plenty of opportunities to kill his son, but he never really tried, before this final battle. Even there, he held back. Connor, much as he opposed what his father had become, also loved his father, and he didn't want to kill him. However, his world view was much simpler, than his father's. While Haytham always operated in the grey (as did his father, Edward Kenway), Connor looked at the world in a more binary way. Probably the trauma of seeing his home burn when he was young, being helpless to help his mother, he became uncompromising. In the end, he didn't see a way out, he didn't see how he and his father could live without always being diametrically opposed to each other. Haytham knew this, he always knew this. He still wouldn't kill his son, so he forced his hand. Personally, I think the best part of AC3 was the dynamic between father and son. It was a great tragedy. I personally always liked Connor. I think the story of AC3 suffered mostly because it made Connor a side character in history, instead of letting the historic events serve as a setting. Had they focused more on the Homestead, building the Brotherhood and most importantly, the antagonistic relationship between Haytham and Connor, I think this came could've been a true masterpiece. Of course, anyone following Ezio was kinda fighting an uphill battle, and it's easy to be critical in hindsight. AC3 was still the game that hooked me into the series, and the reason I got the earlier games as well.
@sng39394 жыл бұрын
I really wish haytham got a solo game because he’s a very interesting character. Instead of introducing good characters then moving to a new protagonist in the next game, they should focus on one story at a time a built upon it like they did with ezio.

Fizhy I’ve always had this gut feeling that Haytham gave Connor an opening! I always remember when Achilles schooled a young Connor during his Assassin training for wanting to rush in and track down his father - his words was “ your’re just a boy with a few months training ! He is a man with decades of experience! That statement alone made my wonder why Haytham knowingly left an opening for Connor to strike ! Haytham demonstrated time after time that he loved Connor as his flesh and blood from the constant lectures he was giving him on Templar Ideology and their aims. I remember the roof top conversations when the pair was hunting down Benjamin Church in Boston and Haytham Quoted “ There was a time were the Assassin’s possessed a more sensible goal! So in some ways Haytham admired the Assassin Brotherhood just not in it’s form were Connor was concerned. Another thought that crossed my mind was when Connor told Haytham Zio was dead ! He looked truly devastated and when I read the forsaken novel, his Love for Zio never burned away. So maybe he knew that this was a battle in the long run he was not going to survive and come to the realisation that Connor was his legacy as Haytham’s indoctrination into the Templar ideology at the hands of Reginald Birch flourished into making the world a better place by the means he thought was right ! Haytham and Connor wanted to the same thing but through different means and Haytham also probably knew that the only way his legacy and goal will live on ( though not in the form he hoped for ) was in Connor ! His only son
@ThunderstruckGames6 жыл бұрын
Even without the book, Charles had kept tabs on the village. That told Haytham that Ziio had a child after their romance. Then, Haytham devised a plan on how to find the Precursor site using this information. After realizing just what was happening with everything, Haytham decided to aide the Colonies, while appearing to aide the Empire. Why? Because he saw a great leader in Connor. When every encounter the two had, Haytham always had the upper hand, and could have easily won. He tried to reason with the rage filled Assassin, which, in turn, allowed Connor to see as neither Assassin or Templar, but a person from both sides. Connor saw, just before killing Haytham, that his father was right about the dangers ahead, and that both sides sought the same goal, but with different methods. Haytham did let Connor Kill him. But in doing so, it let Connor see the full truth.
@rebelblade71595 жыл бұрын
Actually more evidence lies in the Novel Forsaken. Two guards came during their fight after a cannonball knocks them down. But Haytham orders them to restrain themselves. Here is that part from the point of view of Connor: “Surrender, and I will spare you,” I said. I felt the breeze on my skin, the passageway suddenly flooded with natural light. He looked so old, his face battered and bruised. Even so, he smiled, “Brave words from a man about to die.” “You fare no better,” I replied. “Ah,” he smiled, showing bloodied teeth, “but I am not alone . . .” and I turned to see two of the fort’s guards come rushing along the corridor, raising their muskets and stopping just short of us. My eyes went from them to my father, who was pulling himself to his feet, holding up a restraining hand to his men, the only thing stopping them from killing me. Bracing himself against the wall, he coughed and spat then looked up at me. “Even when your kind appears to triumph . . . still we rise again. Do you know why?” I shook my head. “It is because the Order is born of a realization. We require no creed. No indoctrination by desperate old men. All we need is that the world be as it is. This is why the Templars can never be destroyed.” And now, of course, I wonder, would he have done it? Would he have let them kill me? But I’ll never have my answer. For suddenly there was the crackle of gunfire and the men span and dropped, taken out by sniper fire from the other side of the wall. And in the next moment I had rushed forward and, before he could react, knocked Haytham back to the stone and stood over him once again, my blade hand pulled back. And then, with a great rush of something that might have been futility, and a sound that I realized was my own sob, I stabbed him in the heart. This pretty much proves that Haytham restrained himself which led Connor kill him. He probably tried to convince him till the very end. Because, unlike most Templars, Haytham still carries the Assassin's ideal of skepticism thanks to how Edward raised him. He was not indoctrinated but rather he chose the Templar way due to his own experience and understanding of human nature. That's why instead of killing Connor, he tried to show him his point of view in an attempt to change him, which failed.
@harukinakamura66305 жыл бұрын
Yeah he did let Connor kill him, but I also think Connor was holding back a bit in fighting him. Because there was a scene where Achilles told him he must kill his father and Lee but Connor was not in favor of killing his own father. He wanted to try to convince his father. So you see they both really didn't want to kill each other. But given the circumstances haytham let Connor kill him and Connor knowing in those final moments that he needed to do what he must as his duty as an assassin even if it hurts losing his father.
@tacobaco64607 жыл бұрын
I never really thought about it tbh and I can actually believe it considering that in Forsaken you can really tell that Haytham cares for Connor especially after he saved him from his hanging

Well , he did. In Forsaken Haytham actually saved Connor from hanging ... He could have killed him at the church and he could have killed him when he said : Gone.. Just sneak and stab him . He was one of the best (if not the best) fighter in the series and a way too intelligent (read forsaken , he managed to beat Miko without his blade IIRC) so this move would be completely stupid . Anyway , Connor only succeeded because his father was the templar grand master. If the grand master was Shay or someone else , connor would've been dead long ago. Haytham would never kill Connor. In his book , he was talking about his father , how much he admired him and loved him. He hoped Connor will do the same one day..

I thought this story came full circle rather well. Haytham became a Templar though his father was an assassin & learned & grew to hate the assassins while Connor [his son] became assassin and grew & learned to hate the templars. Both had traumatic childhoods witnessing a parent killed that changed their trajectory ultimately. The bloodline eventually came back to the brotherhood & I think their was so much of young Haytham in Connor that Haytham saw making it hard to kill him. He missed his father which usually results in us men wanting to be great fathers. It was an action packed story but an emotional one none the less. Plus, Connor kinda did What Shay did in reverse. Shay killed the assassins and was an assassin to start with, Connor was the son of a templar and killed the templars. Its a very equal balance that makes you want to continue to watch the war between the two institutions. I loved it

Charles tells him that 'there was a boy' in the novel (pg 385) Haytham thinks about it for a second then thinks the idea is too far-fetched. He doesn't protest against his hanging openly, but on the next day when he wakes up he decides he won't let his son die (pg 400) and saves him (pg 405) (while obviously calling the assassin's stupid for wanting use a bowman) then quickly left, and when Charles informed him of Hickey's death he acted surprised. (pg 406) Then about two years later they meet in the church while they are looking for Church. Included the pages in Forsaken for anyone interested.

Haytham let him kill him. I think because of guilt as a father who failed his son in the regards of Charles killing Connors mother. conflicted with the fact that he liked Charles some could say he even loved him like a son. But his alligeance to the Templar order was in the way. kinda remind me of Darth Vader towards the emperor, when he could had easily left him to die on mustafar but didn't and for that Vader felt obligated to side with the empire, in the same way the Templars took in young Haytham under their wings... what if Edward never died at the time by the hands of the Templars and had fully raised and trained Haytham.... we will never know.. great video man

Personally? I'm a sucker for the Kenway Family and I just want them all to be happy, particularly Connor and Haytham. Although, I already knew and believed in this theory, it is nice to see you contributing to it and even place arguments on its likelihood. Some of the other commenters have already mentioned this, but I'm going to point them out as well. Through this, I'm going to refer to Johani Otso Berg from AC: Rogue. Once you fix the computer at the front desk on the Helix Research floor, you get the Haytham Kenway inspiration folder. Berg sees Haytham as a controversial figure, and although he holds great respect and admiration for him, Berg also note that "[Haytham] had a streak of emotional weakness, which eventually became his downfall". (Which is hypocritical considering the fact that Berg would do anything for his daughter, but let that be.) Throughout the entire game, we see Haytham staying his blade, both figuratively and literally, from Connor, and the last bits of Forsaken points out that, indeed, Haytham could not make himself do such a heinous act as killing his own son, possibly even orchestrating his own death through leaving that glaring opening to end his life; so, I believe that Haytham loved Connor as much as someone like him could love another being (the man's gone through so much shit that it's not surprising he's handling the situation of fatherhood as crudely and awkwardly as he did). But I also believe it is conjured with his personal beliefs, hoping that through killing him, Connor will be left with little opportunity to chase and kill Charles. (Obviously, Charles lacks self-preservation as much he lacks a spine, so this plan is royally trashed.) Haytham even tells Connor, during him strangling the other, that cutting down a head will eventually blossom into two more sprouting (not in these words, but it is quite much implied), and that so long human nature cocks itself up, over and over, his Order will continue to exist and execute its work, a comparison Charles makes with the Templars being capable of resurrecting themselves time and time again, due to their enlightened view on the world and the human nature. So his own demise is also part of a greater ploy, to prove his point. "Templars kill for efficiency, not petty emotions," which is bullshit, but whatever (I have my mixed opinions about this man, considering the fact that he, oddly enough, has many resemblances to Haytham, even the "emotional weakness", though he's certainly unnerving to listen to).

for me heythem let Connor kill him because: when heythem held Connor to the ground he remembered that his father was an assassin too, and I think that heythem must have wanted his son neither to be a assassin nor to be a Templar, just like he father wanted his son to be, because of that he(edward kenway) went from assassins brotherhood because he wanted to protect his children but heythem did became a Templar, so he would have felt that his son Connor finally succeeded his father's legacy so he let Connor kill him and live his life fully ⬆⬆⬆⬆My Theory your theory was good too

If I remember the lore, he and Connor’s mother were happy together for a time but they had a falling out because of the activities the Templars had begun to perform in the colonies. He also seemed legit upset that Connor’s mother died in the fire, though the thing I read said he was faking that surprise. Either way, maybe his “son” to Connor when they learned of the planned attack on his village wasn’t fake like I thought but actually showing that Connor would put his village above the Templars and the Assassins both, even if it meant killing his childhood friend. Instead of teaching his son something about his “ignorance”, Haytham ended up realizing something he probably had forgotten about since learning his father had been a pirate: love for family, no matter what their affiliation. In the end, maybe Connor reminded Haytham of his mother AND his father- two people he had once loved greatly- and decided that if he couldn’t bring himself to betray the Templar Order- an order he still believed in- he would let Connor finish the Assassins’ mission.

Spaghetti and Meatballs That would be an interesting turnout but i think the ending of ac3 was decent enough. after playing ac rogue it was obvious the templars were having the upper hands with shay killing almost all the master-assassin's so it made sense that connor was to tip the balance back. and it appears that connor was vital to the brotherhood because not only was he the first assassin to introduce and gave the idea of working with templars a chance he also play a big part in allowing the balance to fall towards the assassin more. Even tho his objective in ac3 was ultimately wasted in the end he actually unintentionally helped the brotherhood gain grounds that they needed. decent ending and yeah connor deserved to lived more than haytham. But the modern day templars (abstergo) mentioned that haytham was a poor example of a templar despite being so successful because his heart was strayed by the idea of hurting his own son and his strong desire to avenge his father's death and sister's unfair treatment. All in all, altho haytham is extremely cruel he somehow still had a heart unlike other templars and deep down cared about his family but wouldn't let his pride admit it. so i totally agree with the idea that haytham allowed connor to kill him. just an honest opinion.

That won't works if we're using the Assasin's creed lore, at least in Desmond's story line. The Animus can't go back to the previous generation when the new one was already conceived. So if Connor was killed by Haytham, then you shouldn't be able to play as Connor in the first place because that means Connor was not Desmond's ancestor and so he shouldn't have Connor's memory in the first place.

Listen: Connor was going to bleed out if he got roughed about even a little bit. With the fighting skills, experience and bravery haythem had he could have subdued, and disarmed Connor with no issue. Why would he resort to martyrdom to stop Connor? That wasn't even CLOSE to the only option yet it was the one with the greatest loss with the same net gain. He could have simply got connor in a hold while trying to calm him, or even subdued and disarmed him. Kidnapping even! I imagine if he kidnapped him and started to team up with him Connor might have defected as that is his father after all. Picture it you're trying to kill a dude. You dad tries to stop you and resorts to kidnapping. He takes you somewhere and nurses you to health. Even if your father is in the way of your warpath would you really kill him? That was just a hypothetical but it goes to show haythem had other options which had potential for greater net gain and lesser net loss. He is no fool he wouldn't resort to becoming a forgotten martyr to save Charles. I don't know why he showed incompetency in the fight but that isn't a reason to make assumptions!

@aquilar19432 жыл бұрын
Another detail from Forsaken is that during their fight, Haytham's guards also arrived but Haytham ordered them to do nothing. Connor was injured by the cannons already at that moment, so it won't be hard for Haytham (and the guards) to kill Connor. I could only understand it as Haytham wanted Connor to kill him. Also, another reason Haytham would let Connor kill him is that from his journey through life and his interactions with Connor he came to the realization that it won't be possible for the two of them to reconcile, and one of them must die. Haytham would rather have him die at Connor's hands than kill Connor himself. Connor also learnt about this after he read Haytham's journal, which is one of the reasons why Connor said that he made a mistake and regretted killing Haytham. So I wouldn't agree that Haytham died for nothing. He merely made a choice.

I got a soft-spot for Haytham. He had an opportunity to kill Connor plenty of times but he didin't. Connor himself asks why he didn't kill him when he walked into his ambush in the Church. He clearly loved his son. He tried to walk the line of not betraying his ideals and also keeping his son alive.

Haytham is son of master Assassins Edward Kenway wathcing his father die in pain might have leaden him to what we hate about him and also don't forget Assassin's tried destroying thousands of peoples by taking the precursor box's from AC Rouge this also made him more on trmplar sides, so on mind he was the papa's son and on out he was a master templar and so he might tried to save him from his son's blade but it's his sons blade he couldn't kill his son, and so even tho he saw that blade coming from miles away he couldn't stop it, or he didn't even tried to stop as the video suggests.
