Also, also, a Spartan king would have stayed at the top-right of the Hoplite formation, this is because in Hoplite warfare, the strongest of the hoplites would be placed on the right in an effort to envelope the enemy's phalanx.

yea im pretty surprised... assassins creed always proudly announced their research in history and loose adaptation but also historical facts. That battle was not fought by only 300 spartans, but also way more other greek armies... Also Persians didn't have slaves, but spartans did... hell, what was i expecting of the new assassins creed when i heard it would focus on leonidas...

Amatheon yes there were roughly 7000 other troops from other city states, but that’s it. Leonidas historically sent those men home to sacrifice himself and his own men, however. That’s where the tale comes from. Allegedly some soldiers from the other city states stayed as well but I forget where they were from.

One important thing to note is that the king or leader of the phalanx would always stand at the right side of the formation. This was a position that showed bravery. The reason for that was the fact that a hoplite wold hold his aspis (shield) on the left hand an his dory (spear) on his right, that means that if you stand at the right end of the formation you would completely expose your right hand since there would be no other hoplite on your right side in order to cover it with his own aspis.
@TheSaintArmando

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx "Each individual hoplite carried his shield on his left arm, protecting not only himself but also the soldier to the left. This meant that the men at the extreme right of the phalanx were only half-protected. In battle, opposing phalanxes would try to exploit this weakness by attempting to overlap the enemy's right flank. It also meant that, in battle, a phalanx would tend to drift to the right (as hoplites sought to remain behind the shield of their neighbour). The most experienced hoplites were often placed on the right side of the phalanx to avoid these problems. Some groups, such as the Spartans at Nemea, tried to use this phenomenon to their advantage. In this case, the phalanx would sacrifice its left side, which typically consisted of allied troops, in an effort to overtake the enemy from the flank. It is unlikely that this strategy worked very often, as it is not mentioned frequently in ancient Greek literature.[8]" I guess we are all right

The Badass Jedi. Yeah the truth is far from it but some are blind to it. Calling persians the cowards but from what i saw a group of people claiming to be the best of warriors hiding in a mountain pass behind their sheilds. If a warrior is to die then so be it but die cowering in under a mountain pass is true cowardice. Of course you would disagree but the truth is for everyone to see if you put aside the fake glory and the sense of pride it brings to you.

Was very excited at the start of the video to see an accurately depicted Leonidas. Nice detail with Dienekes being in the game, he was an Officer and thus wore a transverse crest on his helmet to signify his rank. He is the soldier credited with the classic "Then we will have our fight in the shade" quote. All of these are good details, but I must say I am very dissapointed that Ubisoft decided to rip off 300 instead of depicting the battle in a historical context. The Spartans were accompanied by 7000 other Greeks from various different states, with which they rotated out to prevent fatigue from overwhelming the small force. Also very dissapointed they showed Leonidas throwing his shield. That is very insulting to Greeks to depict him this way. Even a King would have been shamed for this. Also, historians wrote at the time that the bodies of the Mede's after the first day of fighting were so tall that the advancing Persian forces had to climb over them to get to the Greeks, yet in the game only a few are scattered around. I understand its just a game and isnt meant to be 100% accurate but they least they could do is accurately represent many peoples heritage.

No, I mean for sure they didn't want to become slaves themselves. I was thinking more from the point of view of the game developers, as to the angle they want to present. Perhaps I am overthinking this, but for the common man ancient Greece is this paragon of democracy and moral values, while it was really more of a mix. Sparta had kings and it was a particularly nasty place for slaves, unlike Persia, which appears to have outlawed slavery on religious grounds (although we so few sources about Persia that none of this is confirmed) So Assassin's Creed is just perpetuating the myth in a sense. Making Leonidas old (like he was at the time of the battle) is a nice tough, though, and tells me they did their research to a degree. Edit: _Our food system is dependent on farmers, do you actually want to become one?_ Depends. In developed countries, being a farmer is a very profitable activity.

I doubt the Persian Empire could conquer Greece due to logistic nightmare and lack the knowledge of the terrain and no, they can't conquer Europe with that type of army. But if you want to know want happen after Persian left, another war and this time is the Spartan vs Greek coalition known as Corinthian War. The strange part is Spartan working together with Persian on peace treaties with Greeks city states know as The King's Peace.

I forgot to add but when Leonidas said that the Persian will make them slave, I was like "dude, your Spartan nation use Helots(slaves) to produce your food and equipment". The funny part is that they more afraid with their Helots than the Persian invasion.

The thing is that the only written history we have about this moment in history is written by a Greek who hated the Persians and there is a lot or evidence that Persia was the most safe and populated place to live in during that time Also it was the Spartans fault that this conflict begun because... I thing it was that they decided not to be part of a peace treaty or something I’ll have to check again but it was something along those lines

Looks like AC made the same mistake as Zack Snyder in 300 The 300 (actually with allies it was a few thousand, but they were still way outnumbered) managed to hold of the Persian army for so long because they exploited 'force multipliers': a combination of training/discipline, use of terrain, and equipment to mitigate Persian numbers. They did not succeed as long as they did by throwing shields, fighting several enemies single-handedly, or even 'slow-mo sword twirling' that the movie loved to shit out. Don't get me wrong, seeing stuff like that is cool in the movies and video games, but for once I would love to see a proper command of a unit, and actual demonstrations of strategy and tactics. Hollywood bullshit is, well, feeding us bullshit.

Ishmaael Bloodreaper you don’t even know what you’re talking about. Zack Snyder’s movie wasn’t even based off the history it was based off of Frank Miller’s 300 comic. Zack made no mistake, his movie was an adaption of a Frank Miller comic. Stop trying to be an history nazi when assassins creed has never been a completely historically accurate game. Plus, don’t say things so ignorantly when you clearly don’t have your facts straight.

Alright guys relax - didn't I say that I thought it can be cool? My point is not that I want to replace this sort of stuff, its that I want an expansion: something more thoughtful. And yes, I did know that the movie was based on a comic, and I love Frank Miller stuff. Please don't confuse my omission for ignorance. I do hope people understand the difference. I know what I am about to say is controversial, but give AC (series) some credit: AC3 had a mission where some tactics were involved (where Connor directed units against the British). Who knows, maybe someone like Ashraf Ismail will get on it and add some 'realism' to AC.

From what i learned of spartan battle formations and tactics All three parts of the body extension was important the shield represent the ability to not only protect oneself but his brother beside him if you are unable to use your shield then you are unable to protect your brother, the spear an extension of your arm to avoid breaking the phlanax formation in tight combat and the sword for when you are unable to use your spear the sword shall be used as a replacement, ofcourse if there's anything i've ever learned in historical combat any army that utilizes a shielded vanguard formation of any kind is deemed strong and should be feared in combat for out of all the fighting style i learned about, a combat style that utilizes the shield in any way is deemed more superior than most combat style aside from gladiator combat which is a complete free style of moves which is more of moving to your survival than moving to kill someone, a vanguard and rearguard will be deemed useless if it cannot protect itself in anyways just look at the past battles that didnt use shields as vanguards they got literally ripped apart by a frontal attack

I understand why people are complaining about the fake and fictional parts of during this historical event in Greek history. However people are right about this, who knows 100 years from now , people will say oh the movie 300 told everything about the battle of Thermopylae, or how this game picked on how King Leonidas threw his shield like captain America. Who knows..... ignorant people will believe this or even young kids will be believing every little detail about this too. History gets “re written” every time and it screws us sometimes. I’m not complaining because ik it’s just a assassins creed game and ik all others that are complaining are too. But if this keeps going on , even Hollywood related or video game or even historical tv shows. People will think back the past 80+ or so years and agree to disagree what’s real and what’s fake or what’s forgotten/re written fictional history.

Spartans weren’t actually warrior hungry and meatheads. They were super smart and believed in bettering themselves in every way, physically and mentally. They studied so much they rivaled the Athenians in regards of knowledge. Etiquette was a important as fighting. They knew how to dance and be perfect gentlemen. They had a simple government system that was literally community ran and required spartan citizens to attend. Their “slaves” were treated so well that slaves from surrounding nations ran to their borders to be taken in as their slaves. They did not sacrifice kids that were defective. It was a exaggerated “monster under the bed” to scare motivation into their offspring. They didn’t believe in indulging in luxuries of the world but in efficiency And finally they fought together, there was never a lone spartan warrior. Phalanx formation for life. They literally were Europe’s samurai. If you don’t agree I’m willing to dispute my claims.
