The new free Discovery Tour mode in Assassin’s Creed Origins makes history fun by letting you clamber all over it dressed as an Egyptian Pharaoh. We did exactly that and, in the spirit of historical research. now present the eight weirdest things we learned while playing. Subscribe for more Assassin's Creed Origins gameplay!
For example, Khufu was the pharaoh buried in the Great Pyramid. What’s weird about Khufu’s final resting place in the Great Pyramid, however, is that although his coffin has been found, his body remains missing to this day.
The coffin was listed as being empty when it was discovered, and its design indicates that there was once a lid in place. Discovery Tour offers the possibility that the sarcophagus is only a cenotaph in memory of the pharaoh, and was never meant to receive the body.
I, however, am here to posit the alternate theory that Khufu punched his way out of his coffin and now roams the earth menacing people with his good friends Dracula and the Wolfman. You decide which you think is more plausible out of these, the only two possibilities.
Assassin’s Creed Origins’ Discovery Tour mode drops as a free update for the main game on 20 February 2018.

My favorite fact about ancient Egypt is just how old it is and how long it lasted. Cleopatra lived closer in time to today than when the great pyramid was built. The great pyramid was built 4,500 years ago and Cleopatra lived about 2,050 years ago. The great pyramid was already ancient at about 2,500 years old when she lived!

As someone has researched Kemet/ Ancient Egypt for 17 years (since i was 15) anytime you do carbon dating you have to add at least 3 to 4 thousand years to it. According to some archaeologist the sphinx is closer to at least 35,000 years old.

Alexander the Great actually named at least 8 cities Alexandria, but the others had name-changes.

it's actually still unclear how many of those cities were built in his lifetime. He has the peculiar problem of having a shorter lifespan than the average error margin for most dating methods. Many people think now that most of the Alexandrias were really built by his successors. Still, he did build at least two cities, and both of them still exist. Which is definitely an accomplishment. Also, the flour thing is almost certainly a myth. Even if Alexander had been that stupid, Aristoboulos (his architect) wasn't. Considering that Alexander was taught by Aristotle, one has to be a little skeptical about a story like that. It sounds more like the sort of crock that a tour guide would cook up, and since Alexandria has been a tourist destination for thousands of years it's unsurprising that something like that would get written down as canon.

This seems like a really fun, smart addition to the game. not only does it let people immerse themselves more completely in the time period the game is set in, but it teaches them something and allows the developers to show off the graphical efforts they made to produce the game, as well as the level of reasearch and detail they did to bring the game to life. Very, very interesting. I might want to buy this game myself at some point.

The level of detail is astounding. Often, it's breath taking. Some of the tours are brilliant and you'll actually learn some new things about Ancient Egypt. It transports you back in time and you get a real sense of what it was like back then. The Siege of Alexandria was amazing and one of the longest I've done so far. As you travel, the story plays out and you even see the moment when Cleopatra meets Caesar. The entire world is rich and vibrant enough for gameplay. Adding this to the mix only adds to the depth. Exploring the inside of the stepped pyramid was another favourite. I still have dozens of tours left. If you don't fast travel to them all, it will take a fair amount of time to see them all. Mind you, even fast travel won't be short.

@PanEtRosa
@PanEtRosa 6 жыл бұрын
They can't. Birds just aren't troubled by sand and grit like we are. They don't chew, thus sand won't grind down their beaks. And they can either pass it without digestive distress or they can store it in their gizzard to aid digestion by grinding their food. So they don't hesitate to eat food mixed with sand, gravel, etc.
@PanEtRosa

Great video, but Hatshepsut's 'reign' was relatively contentious, and 20 years after her death, her monuments were defaced by her son. Leading historians believe it was an attempt to hide the fact that a woman ever ruled Egypt, as it was problematic given that the Pharaoh was the embodiment of the male god Horus. No respect for mummies...
@axeltenveils6816
@axeltenveils6816 6 жыл бұрын
Look at Overly sarcastic productions, they made a video about her, newer theories believe that there wasn't any cover up like that by the son of her husband. The next pharaoh was actually the son of a different wife of the previous one.
@merrymachiavelli2041
@merrymachiavelli2041 6 жыл бұрын
+Axel Tenveils I second the Overly Sarcastic Productions rec, they're great, but I do think Hapshepsut is still a bad example of women being equal in Ancient Egypt. Hapshepsut is one of the relatively rare examples of a female Pharaoh in Egypt's stupidly long history. I've not done the math, but I imagine most European monarchies had female rulers far more frequently than Egypt did. And not many people would hold pre-20th century Europe up as a beacon of gender egalitarianism. That female pharoahs were so rare suggests that there must have a pretty strong cultural aversion to them.

Thutmose III wasn’t her son.
@thedjinn2873
@thedjinn2873 6 жыл бұрын
Pharaoh Maatkara (Queen Hatshepset) ascended to the throne of Egypt after the death of her husband, Thutmose III. Her nephew (brother-husband's son by a lesser wife) was only 4 and as Maatkara was the only true royal child (daughter of previous Pharoah and his sister-wife) she was given the regency. It's not too clear as to how Maatkara gained the throne of Egypt, however we do know that her rule was peaceful and profitable for the country. We do have a written record where Maatkara claims Ra to be her biological father, in that one night the God's ka (one of the parts of the soul) possessed the body of her father and impregnated her mother. As Maatkara, her mother and grandmother were priestesses in the Cult of Ra, in a role known as "God's wife" it was a very plausible story to the Egyptians. While pictures of Maatkara have been defaced after her death, many of them remain, including several statues and sphinxes that are currently on display in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Current evidence leads us to believe she died a peaceful death (as opposed to one of murder or I'll intent). This is evident by the state her mummy is in as well as some of the reliefs that have been left untouched by her nephew. The reliefs show Maatkara and Thutmose III side by side and of equal size (size symbolized the importance of subjects) but with different roles in government: Maatkara governing and Thutmose overseeing the military. In fact, when Thutmose took the throne after his aunt's death he was a conquer. There's no solid answer as to why Maatkara's face and name has been defaced as much as it has been, but one working theory (the one I personally like. Lol) is that while Thutmose III and Maatkara got along well, Maatkara had a daughter, no sons. So in order to protect *his* hold on the throne Thutmose decided to make a show of defacing Maatkara's image. Not enough to make her suffer a second death, though, because it wasn't really personal. But that last sentence is just my conjecture (I know, bad habit to add that.)

Michael Cohen I think they knew it for even longer. I remember reading an book as an child where they mentioned hidden tombs under the pyramid they found thanks to x-ray and ultra sonic scans. And every body who ever had business with officials know how long that takes.

The Sphinx's face was red because ancient Egyptians painted all their men using red and all their women using yellow. This can be found not just on the Sphinx but in any tomb wall painting. As for gender equality, Egypt had women Pharaohs like England had women queens and Russia had empresses. You only rarely got women as a single ruler (Elizabeth, Victoria, Catherine the Great) Though they existed, they were often the exception. The Egyptians actually believed that women rulers went against the religious concept of divine order, or Ma'at.

Fun fact! The statuary you see depicted throughout the more Greek cities such as Alexandria would have been painted as well! Not just the Egyptians were fond of pigments on their statues. The pure white marble we see today looks the way it does for the same reason the Sphinx is now bare. However, we have absolutely no way of knowing how every individual statue would have been painted so there’s no point in attempting to paint the marbles in the game either.

The Sphinx had a different head, it had the head of Anubis, guardian of the underworld. Later one of the pharaohs (can't remember name) had the head replaced by his own. You can see this by the shape of the body versus the head which makes no sense. The Sphinx with a jackal / Anubis head on the other hand fits perfectly.

The best account I heard of the chambers in the Sphinx was that they originally were designed to generate a tone like a wind chime, but that this functionality was lost due to earthquake damage. This could fit with the Egyptian love of proportions seen in some early temples. Of course, there are also plenty of theories on the inernet about how the hidden chambers hold the true secret history of the human race and the universe...

Most likely Khufu's mummy was stolen since in the Middle Ages it was believed that mummy dust was highly magical, another reason why the mummy was robbed is because he was buried in lots of treasure, I mean Tutankhamon was a unknown king and look at the treasure he was buried with, usually it was the tombs architechts who robbed them.

As of last year, every inch of the entire Sphinx complex has been examined with sonar, infrared, x-ray, radio signals... There aren't any passages left in it that researchers don't know about. That said, there is one chamber that is known but still inaccessible without digging through the monument. That chamber is about the size of the Grand Gallery where Khufu's sarcophagus was located. Exploratory tests are sensitive enough to be able to tell if there is a large freestanding object like a sarcophagus within the concealed chamber and haven't discovered one. I wonder how they're going to proceed examining that space.....

My favorite fact of Ancient Egypt was found in one of my old history books. Apparently, king/pharaoh Sneferu (or Snofru) attempted to build a pyramid three times - the first two times were bummers since he first made a weird minecraft-like pyramid, and then a pyramid that had a weird tent-like upper form (the Bent Pyramid). And at last, after learning of his mistakes, he made a third, perfect pyramid that he could rest in peace in... even the genius Egyptians made mistakes, folks.

@redshirt49

Actually, the Discovery Tour does mention that it might have been a jackal, and indeed it would make sense since the jackal was representative of protecting resting places. However, there is little beyond speculation to actually definitively say this was the case and placing the Sphinx' age beyond ~5000 years is implausible since that's when it starts appearing in records. The most likely theory is that it was either altered into its human shape or built entirely by one of Khufu's successors to honor him. Any scholar on these matters is aware that it might have made sense for it to have been a jackal but there is 0 evidence to suggest this is true. The only indication of it is that the head seems smaller than it should be but that could be for any number of reasons. As for the theory that it's older than Egypt, well, there is even less evidence for that. This is generally repeated by people who misunderstand how erosion works and what its effects would have been on the unrefined, raw sandstone the Sphinx was carved out of.

@@redshirt49 you do realize that it is water erosion that surrounds and is on the Sphinx right? It was caused by thousands of years of rainfall. Tell me genius, when was the last time it rained in Egypt? Well to save you the time of looking it up, that was about 10,000 years ago, literally double the age your proposing. This was proven by many reliable sources, one of them being Robert Schoch. He covered the Sphinx head and asked a geologist what could of caused that erosion and he said it was undoubtedly due to lots of rainfall, then when he revealed that it was the Sphinx the geologist simply sayed "Oh, wow". So unfortunately for your theory, yes there indeed is reliable evidence that is way older than we think. I find it extremely ironic when you talk about how erosion should work when you failed to point out a very simple yet important fact regarding the *type* of erosion it was. In this specific case it makes a world of difference considering it's been a desert for way longer than 5,000 years.
@redshirt49
@redshirt49 5 жыл бұрын
@@leeonardodienfield402 Hey, don't present suppositions as facts. The thing about the Sphynx being like 10.000 years old is not a well-respected theory because it raises too many questions without answers and contradicts some evidence we have. The most popular argument for this is the weathering, which has been likened to water erosion from rainfall. Since Egypt was a desert 5000 years ago that would make its construction at this time impossible. But that theory has problems, for one it does not account for the then lack of additional wind, sand and oxygen ersosion that should have taken place since then nor does it mention that there are other, more plausible explanations for the erosion observed Occam's Razor and all that.. It's also erroneously assumed by some that the thing is or was pointing at Leo, which is nonsensical considering the fact that it is unlikely this civilization would have the same constellations we do and associate them with the same things. Furthermore, it's impossible: the sky is always in motion and always was. Constellations are never in any one place for long enough to build things that point at them. Is it possible the thing is twice as old as we believe? Yeah. Is it likely? No.

Regarding the grit in the food, the game gets it both correct and wrong. Yes, the fine grit present in flour and bread wore down the tooth enamel (this was in fact an issue not just in Egypt but in all civilizations that ground grain with the help of stones, either by hand or with millstone), but it also had an advantage: It wore away the grooves in the crown of our molars (which are a characteristic of human teeth, compared to other primates), which in a culture that consumed bread (containing starch) and wine and honey (containing sugar) would actually have *lessened* the chance of getting tooth cavities from caries, because the bacteria that cause caries usually sit in the grooves and in the gaps between the teeth and consume sugars. Worn-down teeth didn't automatically equal cavities.
