Assassin's Creed Syndicate, what it did wrong. Over a week ago I made a video about what I felt Assassin's Creed Syndicate did right so in this video I go over some of the flaws I found with the game and the issues I had with it. For me, the biggest downfall of the parkour system was the removal of the free jump. Not being able to jump early up to a wall or ledge is painful after playing Unity.

@@ruty_bolzga424 I believe it's because people who didn't understand Unity's parkour system (it could be a bit finicky) tended to fling themselves off of buildings. And instead of giving better tutorials and improving the parkour Ubisoft simply took away the freedom to make mistakes. Hell, they removed fall damage all together in Odyssey :/

@@ruty_bolzga424 Tbh I like most of it. The setting is one of my favourites, save for the lack of good parkour spots, I like Evie and Jakob. But yeah the stealth is inconsistent, can't keep your hood up without crouching everywhere, the combat is cartoonish and janky. Just a shame really

Especially the fact that the removal of the free just forces you to rely on the rope launcher to get across, rendering parkour completely useless. But its cool, this is the same damn studio that made Odyssey's parkour negate fall damage. Old or bad game, a bad game is a bad game.

2:40 - you're wrong about Unity here. Unity actually has enemies with different power levels. But in that game your damage output isn't dictated by character level per se. Instead it depends on the level of the weapon you're using and the skills you have. So if you use a 1-star sword and you have no skills and you decide to take down 5-star enemies, you'll probably gonna get wrecked. All you need to do to find out how it works is start the game and right at the beginning of the sequence in Paris where Arno is already wearing Assassin robes, start one of the later co-op missions alone. Try to fight basic soldiers and see what happens. They'll probably shoot you dead in a matter of seconds.

Yeah and I finished just about every side mission in syndicate at like level 4 or 5 had London 100% liberated by the time I started sequence 4 and just had to unlock the other stuff I’m level 8 in sequence 5

What holds Syndicate down in my opinion is the story, by far. Syndicate for me was super fun, I had tons of fun playing the game, I think it's beautiful, London is one of my favorite maps in the franchise, the soundtrack is top tier perfect, but the story? It's almost like a satire of the franchise. It's too childsh, with too many jokes, it has no weight and so on. At least it has Assassins...

I feel like that's what Ubisoft is riding on rn, "at least it has assassin's" and "it's called assassin's Creed, so people will buy it" and I don't like, they're completely changing what the game is supposed to be but hey, "at least the name is still there"

You forget the fact that you can't equip two tools at once like you could in Unity. Takes a lot of the sandbox experience away. Also, yes blackbox assassination missions where cool but they were incredibly linear compared to Unity.

@BirDMaN 27 they forced you to go down linear paths that gave you a standard outcome, unlike infiltration opportunities in Unity. Again, there were cool animations for the unique kills, but it didn't have the "hitman charm" Unity gave me.

Unity's blackbox missions were also quite linear, at least in this one there's unique kills for every assassination mission.

I was super surprised to find out the twins were only 21 years old in the story, which explains their immatureness a lot, and it seems even doubly ridiculous that two 21 year olds were able to lead a gang and basically take down every templar in one of the biggest cities at the time. Also another minor complaint was that this is probably the game where I felt the enemies were just a clone army, especially the bald dude. In other games they had standard uniforms which at least gives a reason for why they look the same but in syndicate, the the same 3 faces appear over and over again and really kills some of the immersion. And also no blood effects on models, why? that was a straight downgrade from the older games and I really can't see a reason it was removed, this made the combat even more cartoonish than it already was.

I couldn´t agree more, butt still the atmosphere makes this game for me my favourite game across all games... But with that Starrick is just porrly written, there is one villian that I have really loved and actually my favourite villian of all times, I want more storyline with Maxwell Roth.

The issues i had was oversimplification of parkour where the player isn’t even allowed to make risky jumps and the constant spamming of attack button on chunky enemies till they fall(atleast it can be dealt with later on with player upgrades) yes there are finishers but they too are inconsistent sometimes and the story was a bit too casual towards the end. Other than that victorian London is one of the favourites setting in the series, the London vibe just hits me different.

I love it because of the Victorian Era and the potential an Assassin's creed story has in that setting. I love the characters Jacob and Evie and their Gang on the rails. But at the end of the day the overarching story feels insanely generic and rushed. Like the developers were like ''Oh they know the drill!'' Assasins, templars, conflict oh and a piece of eden slap them all together and they'll be satisfied. I just feel this game has a lot of lost potential in terms of story and gameplay. for example I would have given Evie the ability to disguise herself to infiltrate parties and alike. being able to actually walk around the city dressed as an victorian lady only to then pull out your hidden blade and assasinate targets sounds awesome. But no instead we just got tomboy girl number 120 who has to remind the audience; THAT SHE IS NOT LIKE OTHER GIRLS, SHE DOESNT LIKE DRESSES, SHE DOESNT DO GIRLY THINGS! Even though it would have made complete sense if Evie along side her assassin training was actually tutored in victorian etiquette in order to infiltrate parties and gatherings to gather information. but alas...

Would agree on the level system, I remember when I just finished the Whitechapel chapter and wanted to explore Westminster, where it highest level enemies station, and I could not even start a fight with them cos you'll just get mowed down. I didnt find parkour to be that great of a problem, personally I like the addition of grappling gun, I know some people might argue that it eliminates the core of parkour, but using that thing climbing onto Big Ben and other landmarks is the one thing I love in freeroam. One thing I think I would complain is you can only have your hood up when sneak, but I guess it's because they realized it's not very 'hide in plain sight'

I think you should have addressed the "darker" tone element with the Jack the Ripper DLC which is an essential piece of the story unlike, say, Unity's DLC.

Unity's DLC Dead Kings actually wraps up Arno's story though. Helps him come to terms with losing Elise and gives him a purpose and hope for the future of France.

One thing that really bugged me about the story is that Evie has missions where she has to fix Jacob’s Missions but there isn’t any missions for Jacob to do the same with Evie. It would have been easy with Evie so focused on the mission that she would allow allies to get kidnapped or even killed. Jacob’s missions would be rescuing the allies or getting payback for their deaths.

I liked the new weapons, especially considering it would be silly for everyone in industrialized, Victorian London to be swashbuckling with swords. I wish Unity kept hidden blade combat and daggers (a la Ezio Trilogy but refined). That would be my combat method of choice in that game.

Hahahahahaha you're right bro, the level system is extremely slow and annoying that it prohibits you from using weapons that you already unlocked but are not of your level. The physical ones, although they are rare, they make me funny And the parkour thing did remove some animations but I really think that it is because of using both the hook it looks like parkour is slower. I really enjoyed Syndicate, vast improvement over Unity, Evie Frye was great with her cloaking ability and extra throwing knives, clear out an enemy camp from on top of a flag pole. Why oh why did she lose that ability for Jack the Ripper 🤔

i agree somewhat, unity was a buggy mess and still is, but syndicate played like a cartoon in comparison, but it was an improvement in everything else. well i didn't actually like the whole perk system thing and some of the direction of the story, and the jack the ripper story was meh... not written very well, but it was fun. it's weird i kind of have the same opinion of the newer games, they are fun but they aren't that good other than fun and graphically good looking.

I agree with pretty much everything you said here, I think the level system didn't bother me as much in Syndicate because it still was relatively light, compared to where the series then went, but I agree a level system doesn't belong in AC. I feel that way about the direction in many Ubisoft titles that just started formulaically adding levels and loot to them. AC Syndicate feels like it takes a bunch of inspiration from the Batman Arkham games, and if I think about it, its a pretty good Batman game, but for all the reasons you stated, not a great AC game. My issues with Syndicate not being a great AC game stem almost exclusively from the story and tone problems. Mechanically, outside of maybe giving more animations back to parkour and choice as well, are minimal. I think Syndicate is mechanically one of the best, if not the best, of the old style AC games.

The leveling system was in unity. The higher level areas there in unity. The fancy animations in unity take ages. The grappling hook shouldn't be in the game if you have carriages. Starick was ok. With everything else i agree.

My favorite AC game. Well, recently I only play Unity & Syndicate (don't play RPGs cuz I don't like that & still quite expensive to me) Biggest downfall is its story, probably the worst in the series. But other than that, Syndicate is probably a step up from Unity. For the manual jump button, I'd say Ubisoft want to make Syndicate more consistent with its parkour (well, based on my experience in Unity u could catapulted far away where u don't want to). And for slightly RPG mechanics, I'd say Unity is more like it because the leveling system really only affects ur combat. U get all the weapons & gears and also grappling hook right from the beginning. Also u could get skill points (sync points in Unity) alot easier just by doing some assassination moves/1000xp. I cleared out the entire map when I was only in sequence 3 right after I got the grappling hook

Finally someone whom I can resonate with. I've always criticized syndicate on forums and reddit, and get chewed up by fans. You've covered almost all the points I hate about syndicate. Let's just face the fact, we only tolerate syndicate because it was the last AC that stayed somewhat true to the mechanics of the earlier games and did not take the RPGish path

Looking back on the marketing campaign from many years ago… there’s very little mention of evie Frye. It’s all Jacob until you actually play the game and turns out evie is the one running the show while Jacob ruins everything. Even in Jack the Ripper he takes L’s right off the bat…

People says unity physics are good but forget that Arno basicaly flyes while jumping, the guy can go 5 meters in one jump in this game (also unity already has enemies level system in the form of stars, if you go in a region without a high rank sword and skills you get wrecked, is just not show as lvl like in syndicate)

My least favorite part of the game revolves around Jacob and Evie’s relationship, one specific aspect. Throughout the game, Jacob is very reckless which occasionally causes problems Take the bank assassination for example. Jacob kills the Templar which sets London into panic. We see Evie in the next sequence get annoyed at his recklessness, but then quickly fix the problem. Then at the end of the game before the last mission, they get into an argument and agree to go their separate ways. This confused me, because we never see Jacob and Evie prior to this fighting. The conflict arises out of nowhere.

Hello MasterAssassin, it would be Interesting to Compare Bayek, Alexios/Kassandra and Eivor because they are both basically Gods. Spoiler Alert: And with Alexios being The Dikastes of Atlantis and the chosen one makes him really strong, I don’t really remember but I think he also killed Hades and many Mythological Creatures and he also destroyed Project Olympos, also killing a really strong creature that Aita and Juno created and ended the cycle of Atlantis at The End with Poseidon. And with Eivor being The King of The Gods, wich is Odin and also killing creatures makes him also really strong. And Bayek also „killing“ Egyptian Gods makes him really strong. It’s unfortunate how they went all in on the single player in this game after Unity’s fumble only to create a worse campaign overall. When the lead characters are straight up comical, Jacob mostly and Evie seems like she’s only there as a foil to him, and the villains are literally moustache twirling ones, I knew it was going to be lackluster

There was a story from the Victorian times where a man claimed there was a brain controlling machine called the heirloom and it was manipulating parliament.(this is a true story) Imagine if this game was a sequel to unity and we have to fight the other assassin brotherhoods like French one. To find out we were being manipulated into it. which is why the modern assassins are so weak. Some templar faction manipulated the world during the Napoleon wars or something. Imagine the war missions and sneaking around London to find some machine that applifies the apple of Eden or something. Would have been the best game in the series probably 😅

For me the biggest let down is the light and cheerful tone that doesn't suit the dark and depressing London Also there is absolutely no logical reason for the parkour to be stripped down to the bare basics, all being replaced with the slow and tedious rope launcher

the point of the rope launcher is to speed up navigation, not slow it down. It's a lot more "slow and tedious" to climb up Big Ben than it is to grapple up it. Then again, you don't have to use it...

The rope launcher Is definitely needed otherwise, you wouldn't be able to get around London at all, but it completely removed the need for parkour. It's supposed to speed up parkour but it takes ages having to pull yourself and the rope

Things that made wrong Story: Character personality The villain Most of the story except Gameplay: Monotonous combat The century is very unimaginative at times and the issue of not being able to wear the hood at will The parkour animations are reduced a lot and you cannot do dangerous jump The setting is the worst problem because it is too colorful and uninteresting last hour's side quest and Jack the ripper DLC fixes this and the gameplay issues are not as bad with that setting so enveloping Summing up criminally wasted potential, only worth it for the last hour side quest and jack the ripper DLC
