That first scene where Arno's father dies is maybe one of my absolute favorite death scenes. Arno's reaction is so fucking breathtakingly beautiful. There's no screaming, no crying, no falling down on his knees and dramatically shaking his father's body, no loud 'FATHER!' - there's just Arno, staring at his dead father with the sound of a ticking clock in the background, and then when he's finally awoken from the shock, he looks down and the clock is broken, as if time has stopped for him and now he's frozen in this one moment - staring at his father's dead body - for the rest of his life. God, I love this scene.

If this game has any redeeming factors, its Arno and Elise's relationship. Seriously, they handled the way these two interacted with each other really well and sold the fact that they both love each other despite all the hardships.
@ChevaliersEmeraude8 жыл бұрын
That's funny, because to me that's what ruined it. I mean, for starters, they are brother and sister. Granted, Arno's adopted, but it's still really messed up! And the game focused WAAAY too much on that romance story instead of focusing on storyline that HAD potential, but were basically put on the side (like the fragile alliance between the Assassins and the Templars. "would have loved to see that developped further). I don't mind romance in my game, in fact I do like the Henry/Evie from Syndicate, but that's specifically BECAUSE they don't make it so central to Evie nor Henry's character. Elise, who had the potential to be an amazing character, is reduced to a mere love-interest in Unity. The first time she was announced, I knew instantly that it would be her role in the game, and was seriously disappointed. There were a time, when I heard the whole thing about her father adopting Arno, where I thought ''Oh, so she's not his love interest, she's his sister? Well, that could be interesting to see!'', and I was hopeful to see that. But then it finally turned out: She's both. Yeah, that was messed up. Sorry for the rant. I'm currently replaying the whole serie, and that love story, IMO, is quite messed up, and for me is pretty much the reason Unity is the black sheep of the serie...

@shadowofdread70189 жыл бұрын
Well with AC3 you kinda had to step back and reevaluate the story before making an honest review. I mean gameplay wise it was okay but the story of Connor had to be the saddest but greatest AC story. I mean think about it giuys; all Connor wanted was to protect the ones he loved and ensure freedom for all. He wanted to protect his village so what happened to his mother never happened again to anyone else. He was the last hope of the Assassin order after Shay and his father burned it to the ground. He was the last Assassin in America and it was up to him to make things right again. His journey caused him his mother, his mentor, his father, he had to kill his best friend and his village considered him a traitor thanks to the Templars and were driven out. But despite Connor's losses and failing to save his people, he kept going because in his heart he knew the Assassin order would rebuild and bring peace to the world. Despite all of his friends abandoning him, he kept going. And despite all odds, he rebuilt the order. Alone.
@shadowofdread70189 жыл бұрын
And in terms of him being kinda quiet and naive at times; Connor lost his mother at (I believe) 5 years old. He watched her burn alive as he failed to save her because he was too weak. This kind of stuff scars people for life. He will always be haunted by his moms death throughout his entire life. And he was naive because back then, American towns like Boston and New York were new to Native Americans. It was all new to Connor. He had never seen a city until Achilles took him there. I suppose you need to look at other fictional characters to understand what I mean. For example; Batman. Batman watched his parents get gunned down in front of him and this scared him forever. He was always quiet and short-spoken (for the most part) around people including his friends. And Gotham was new to him after he became Batman and he had to adapt to it and that took him a while before he finally got the hang of it and knew how things worked. This is similar to Connor. As I said, you have to step back and take a real good look at the story. My advice; look up Connor's speech. It was supposed to be in the credits but was cut. If you listen to it, you'll start to understand.

23:07 Very very nice detail there. Jacques de Molay was the last great master of the Templar Order who died alongside its last members in 1314 after the persecutions from the king of France Philippe IV, they were burned at the stake. Before dying he is said to have cursed the king and his descendance. Shortly after Philippe IV died and all three of his sons died without heirs over a little of ten years thus bringing an end to the direct line of Capetian Kings and ushering in the Valois dynasty. Centuries later, the Templars cut off the head of the last absolute monarch of France and put an end, although temporarily, to the monarchy. Very well done.

While it is shown in Unity that Arno and Elise had a deep connection with each other, I still believe Altair and Maria's story is far better. Altair and Maria changed each other for the better. Maria turned her support over to the Assassins, but mainly towards Altair. And Altair, having a companion by his side, was able to alleviate the stress put on him by the Apple. He also turned much kinder. In Unity, Arno and Elise just complicate each other's lives. Arno turned into a drunk after Elise left him, and Elise moved on by herself. That's not very good lol

@thomas brady not really no, I wouldn't say that I like Arno since I didn't play game and didn't spend hours with him. I stopped playing AC after black flag. The series pretty much lost its appeal to me after Revelation and AC 3. However what I do find notable about him is that unlike Connor, Ezio in his later years and many of the other assassins he isn't an enlightened madman who follows the creed religiously. And he doesn't do so out of selfish reasons, that's why revenge isn't his priority. His inner conflicts and relationship with Elise is not not only representative of that but it also shows the challenges of the day and age as well as finally showing us a character who behaves like a normal human being. No more all white assassins and all black teplars. I think Ezio's mentor attitude, Connor's candid stubbornness and that odd attitude assassins give us in later periods did a lot to hurt the series for me. Funny enough I found that Arno with his more conciliatory and critical approach not only embodies the time period shown and explored but also gives the title unity its full meaning. I wouldn't go as far as calling him brilliant or as thoughtfully well built up as Rockstar characters but I can still pause and appreciate the effort made. I think it's notable and at the very least deserve recognition and respect. Anything beyond that is up to appreciation and personal experience really. I mean they finally altered their recipe for a main character and it worked out rather well, it's interesting and different. And his relationship with Elise not only runs deep but serves the purpose of showing the new challenges as well. And if I may give a personal appreciation, it's a bloody good romance on top. My problem with what you said honestly isn't that you didn't like the game or Arno. As I said, I didn't play it, beyond watching and reading about it I've pretty much dropped AC. It's not so much because I find it refreshingly different, interesting and even daring in some aspects. It is because you're being quite unjust and harsh, being quite vehement towards the character and are adamant about how bad the whole experience is for no other reason than what could be perceived as a personal feeling and distaste. In fact I can return your "tastefully" written reply : what's stopping me from saying that the only reason you're antagonizing me and being harsh towards Arno is because you dislike the game for reasons that are entirely up to you rather than actually judging the game and the character by their full extent and content ? Is the game really pushing us to have sympathy for him or do you simply loath him and the game so much that it's the feeling you get? I mean obviously, as a MC we're seeing the story through his eyes and identify with him but I wouldn't go as far as you do. Since you didn't like the game and you're Giving an articulate response as to why you dislike him but also why he's supposed to be forgettable, I think you should be more careful when holding such extreme positions. The way you're talking about it, it sounds like the second coming of No Man's Sky. But that attitude is tasteless and is blatantly run off the mill, highly doubtful on many levels and excessive. Being articulate doesn't make you right and you should more careful and rigorous when voicing a distaste so great. I'm not interested in being Arno's chaperone, being different doesn't make him outstanding but I can still be disappointed by a fellow gamer and get the feeling that you don't want anyone to enjoy him because he obviously sucks since you feel like it. That's the close mindedness I'm talking about. If anything you're completely ignoring the narrative. Disliking and saying why you dislikd it isn't the same as what you're doing namely almost re-writing the entire thing. I don't care so much about defending a game or a character I don't know so well but I do care about gamers acting like entitled anime watchers for no reason other than their first impressions, no matter how well it's worked upon. And we see more and more of it in video game community lately when it used to be reserved to movie goers and some literature readers. What you thought of it is up to you but damn it lad you have some nerve talking like this.

Elise' death. OMG! I froze without being able to think while tears rolled down my eyes all the way to my heart. I ain't dramatizing my grief, but as someone who invests mentally & emotionally into games, this broke me. 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 I've thought Unity to be worst in the series but the fact that this game made me lose control of my emotions like this changed my mind.

Altaïr has a wife and lives long and happy till he dies in the library Ezio has a wife untill he dies from a heart attack Conner has aveline Aveline has connor Edward had a wife and daughter and got a new wife and a son and lived happy with them Shay is just a stupid templar who doesn't earn a happy ending And arno get's happy in the dlc where he adopts an orphan child

In terms of gameplay, Ezio's trilogy was definitely more entertaining and memorable in many ways. However, what struck me as so much more meaningful in Unity was Arno and Elise's relationship. Elise reminds me a lot of my ex-girlfriend, whom I dated when Unity was first released. Both of them are these individualistic, talented girls that are fixated on their goals. The scene where Arno got trapped under the stone pillars, watching Elise run off to fight her own fight was particularly sad for me. It just really struck a cord, reminding me of having to watch my ex-girlfriend go home due to unforeseen circumstances, and change into a different person over the following months. It feels like I have lost her, the same way Arno lost Elise. This is mostly why I dug up this video to watch right now, haha. At times I really pray I'm not in love with only a memory of who my amazing ex-girlfriend was, but yeah.. Looking at her now does make me feel sad, hollow and.. yeah. It's hard to explain.
@deadlymuffinz9 жыл бұрын
derek400004 that scene was indeed extremely sad and combined with the scene where arno looks at élise's body makes me cry everytime :') élise reminds me of who I want to become; someone who wants to achieve her goals and doesn't let anyone stop her and doesn't care about the opinions of others. The scene that was touching for me was the one where she is walking in Versailles, before her father dies. everyone is gossiping about her and she just doesn't care. I can relate to the hollow feeling you described as well, and reading the novel made it even worse :')

I remember playing this back then, I was a kid back then, but it still felt like I was the one who lost Elise, that if I had just run faster, or decided faster, I could've saved her. Ah! The good old days when Assassin's Creed felt like playing an actual assassin. We all passed the fun mark, now, Marvel is turning to crap, KZbin is cringe, Games are not optimized, and etc. Time to wait for the next fun wave. In the meantime, time to get back to growing.

It's sad but this love story really wasn't that sweet. At first she did not trust Arno because of how she was brought up to be a templar. She didn't trust Arno because his father was a assassin yet still had some feelings for him. She then hated him for letting her dad die even thought she knew all he did was not get the note to him on time which is not his fault fully. She let revenge consume her to the point where she lost all her associated and power her father had to Germaine while Arno was in prison. Throughout the game it is shown she still cares for Arno and they have potential but Arno is the only one fully willing to go forward with this. Elise main objective through the whole game is revenge which results in her death. She couldn't even trust Arno in the end so left him under a stone while she got herself killed, granted the note suggests she did this because she knew Arno would protect her even if it meant letting Germaine go. This however is annoying because she knew at this stage how much Arno truly loved her and she had feelings for him. She knew how much he would hurt when she was gone yet still decided to throw her life away for revenge. If she truly loved him she would of tried harder to be with him forever and find another way to beat Germaine more safely. I would really love to see another version of this made where she lives and actually trusts Arno more, a ending where she is not consumed with revenge to this point. A better way would of been her falling in love with Arno to the point where he is her main objective and revenge is pushed to second place. Maybe they needed some more time but it just does not feel like she could truly trust and love him in the end as much as he loved her. Which just feels unfair for Arno who only had her at that stage, if only a alternate was written or made.

Great take and very true! I think Elise is neurodivergent and as a result doesn't process events as neurotypical people do. This doesn't make her a bad person but she literally let's her impulses drive her and consume her focus to point of tunnel vision and mania. It's tragic for Arno since falling in love with a person like that is pretty challenging especially given the context of what they were living in.
