Long-winded answer, but TL;DR: I agree that he cares more about proving himself right, but deep down he genuinely cared about his students succeeding. How much he cares throughout most of the show is debatable though. ​I’d say that, knowing his origin, he at the very least cared about his students. He thought he failed in his original method, so out of concern for his students he took a different approach. As he is throughout the show, Asano definitely wants to prove that his method is the best way to educate students-after all it’s working. His belief in his own methods is so strong that a challenge to the status quo is seen as something to be stopped. It’s only when he _really_ gets to know Korosensei as a person and a teacher that Asano opens his heart somewhat. Spoilers. I mean, he still feels strongly for what he’s doing. In the same episode that we learn his backstory, he’s also willing to die to prove himself right. But he does come to see the other side, in particular after learning that Korosensei based his teaching methods on what Asano used to do. And if nothing else, Asano’s clear respect for Korosensei in later episodes when he invites him to continue teaching is definitely some character development.
