Charlyne Yi has alleged that they were physically assaulted multiple times by an actor and psychologically abused on the set of "Time Bandits," an upcoming Apple TV+ series produced by Paramount Television Studios and directed by Taika Waititi. They claimed they were coerced to quit the project and were denied workers' compensation for an alleged back injury and PTSD.
In a statement to Variety, a spokesperson from Paramount TV Studios emphasized the importance of the safety of their cast and crew, stating that they take all concerns seriously. They confirmed that a full investigation was conducted at the time of the complaint, and additional steps were taken to address the concerns raised.
A source close to the show asserted that the incident Yi referred to occurred on camera during a scene where actors were running. While they did not deny Yi's back injury, they disputed Yi's claim that their request for workers' compensation was denied, stating that the studio assisted them in receiving payment from the third party responsible for workers' compensation.
Despite attempts by Variety to reach Yi for further information, no response was received. Yi mentioned in their allegations that they are seeking new representation to address their complaints regarding "Time Bandits."
Yi, who plays Judy in the series, made the allegations on Instagram, highlighting the challenges of speaking up in unsafe environments. They described being gaslit by coworkers, producers, and HR, and experiencing suicidal ideation as a result of the alleged abuse.
The source close to the show confirmed Yi's departure before production wrapped but disputed claims of coercion, stating that Yi was given the option to continue working or leave without consequences to their contract.
"Time Bandits," based on Terry Gilliam's 1981 film, wrapped production in January 2023. Yi's character will still appear in the finished series, although their role was adjusted for episodes shot after their departure.
Representatives for Waititi and Apple TV+ deferred comment to Paramount TV Studios, which produced the series with executive producers including Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris, and Garrett Basch.
