That's an important talk here. Although i think that inline skating/rollerblading community is really great/welcoming and united, there are always some strange people who are trying to humiliate other branches of the sport and elevate only their branch. Seems stupid to me. For me inline skating is wonderful because of it's diversity. There is really a place for any person with different styles, physical conditions and esthetic views.

My first time back to the skatepark in almost 13 years was yesterday with my gf. She roller skates and I blade, so I was trying to just give her the basic park tips. later one a couple aggressive inline guys came and they were super cool and very welcoming to us. It really made our already sick day even better.

@gakpad the junkrat boy I'll take a stab at it... He called people at skate parks that belittle other skaters "park rats" he did not call anyone that attends said skate park a "park rat". He could have used "judgmental assholes" instead of "park rats" but I think the context is important and he was being facetious which can be easily confused. So there is that. He didn't belittle anyone who doesn't skate to or from a skate park. It's just that those skaters can't dream of claiming they are familiar with the idea of what he is doing because they literally have never tried it and to belittle it with zero knowledge calls for being pointed out. IE don't say his style is whack when you have driven/bussed to and from the park and never once skated to or from it, let alone in the assault style. Honestly though, I feel what you are saying and I think he could have worded/addressed those points with more tact, however it was noted at the beginning "I go hard in the paint" and he also said "I've done it and I do it." shortly after that to preface he is not innocent in doing what he is gripping about in this very video. I like that you pointed this out.

Thanks to you and the rest of the community (Tiago, Ricardo, 30+Rollin etc...) I'm enjoying myself like I did on my skateboard. (Not to mention how much this is helping my ice hockey game!) Just got a new rig (Powerslide Next in 100mm) and after seeing your review I will most definitely be upgrading to some CATS. I 100% agree. You see it a bit in both the Aggressive skating community and the Street Skateboarding community (though you see it a lot more with street skateboarders.) Ive gotten into many debates with people who claim that you’re not a real skater if you dont attempt to do tricks and grinds. Instead you’re apparently a “cruiser” or rec skater. Its funny to me because the very basis of the trick style skating comes from the more flow oriented skating of the past. Skating whenever and wherever was the entire point of skating. But these days, it seems that if you don’t confine yourself within the limits of a skatepark, then you aren’t actually skating. Kinda funny isn’t it?
@C0R3ON32 жыл бұрын
Right! Skateboarding was conceived specifically to recreate the flow of surfing on pavement. Same reason why cruising fresh powder on a snowboard is so epic. Same thing applies to skating IMO, flowing down the street at a nice pace carving around turns and hopping over objects. pure fun! Don't get me wrong, doing tricks is cool as well and I respect what the agressive skaters are doing but it's certainly not the only way to be "agressive" in this sport.

Best skate video! I'm about to get back on my skates after nearly 20 years off them. I skate like this, but we never had a term for it, you were either aggressive or you weren't. I loved the flow of the skate and the speed, tackling steps and jumps. I think the word 'texture' is a perfect word, the experience of texture when skating around, with music pumping in your ear, a deeper appreciation of your environment in an urban setting. You walk into a forest and experience that, the same way you experience the urban environment on wheels. Cannot wait.

I always thought that recreational skater meant people who are not in any sort of competition: anything that isn't speed skating, marathon, slalom, downhill and aggressive which all have sanctioned tournaments and competitions. Freeskating, fitness skating and skating as a method of transportation would fall under the rec skater umbrella, and it is true that a large number of people just put on their skates on the weekend for a chill roll at the marina promenade, and that's fine! I practice marathon and speed skating, but most of the time I'm just freeskating in the city with my friends, I wouldn't consider that training and while I do not consider myself a "rec" skater, I know lots of people who do. It''s like the distinction between "casual" and "hardcore". All of these words are used differently and just create confusion. Rip the city, own it, grind, jump, slide and have fun. Do it well. The city is ours, recreational or not. So if you can, avoid being a skatepark only skater.

@@moomoocowsly I'll add to this by adding my own experience. I skate but I skateboard. I own a longboard with 2 kicktails but it's just small enough to be considered an big popsicle deck. . The board is kinda heavy so it's not the easiest to pop Ollie's or kickflips on, doesn't mean I havent. I also added some outdoor mats as griptape making it heavier. . I don't do tricks or go to the skatepark. But I ride all over the city, so much so that people have questioned if my board is electric. It isn't. . I gett called a poser or people harass me about doing kickflips for them when I'm waiting at a light. It's not really my problem how people interpret what I do. . I ride because I like rolling, I love going uphill, to literally flex on gravity on my board. I've done tricks but I like my shoes more and I'm not gonna get into the shoe topic rn. . But I also agree that seeing more people skate outside of the parks would be nice. . So to whoever reads this. Pick something u like and find convenient and have fun with it. . In my opinion the 3 basic options go Scooter, skateboard, rollerblades. . It's just small enough that it doesn't require a bike rack. So thank u and bye

This got me into roller skating which I found myself doing all around the area after practice was over. I loved it, and never took the time to figure out what exactly it was that made it so intriguing, but you’re statement about it being precision akin to an elite military operation hit the nail on the head. I remember even making my own sound effects while skating around, dodging cracks, riding down steps, jumping small gaps, etc. Cool video man, took me back to some good times…..also, this is the first time I’ve heard the term, assault skating. I love to hear Bill talk about his approach and the way he views what he's doing. When it comes to skating, I'm definitely a rec skater. While I try to improve little by little every summer and have learned a lot from Bill Stoppard videos, my approach to skating is more like that of a pond skater: It's a nice hobby in the summer months and a convenient way to get accross while getting some exercise. "It's only because I seek the rough when I'm amped up, that I can enjoy the city without struggling over the surfaces when I'm chilled." I wholeheartedly relate to this and I think it's true of so many sports.

Human beings have the need to label things, to describe and categorize them, and the need to belong to groups, as we are social creatures. Unfortunately, when you combine those two benign needs, there are numerous negative byproducts that can emerge: gatekeeping and bigotry are two of those. I hate it when labels are used to demean others and to make them feel unwelcome. If anyone is calling you a "Rec Skater", I choose to read it as "Recording Skater", much like a "recording artist", and it's a title that fits you, as you always capture your art and bring it to all of us, inspiring us. Hey Bill, I'm a skateboarder and have been naturally 'evolving' toward this style for over a decade now. This video was a revelation. Complete revelation. I'm getting older now (40 this year), so my style is necessarily changing. I genrally 'bash into' stuff and roll with different stances and an unusual style/approach. The closest thing my style resembles? Your 'assault skating', but on the plank. In the past month or two (coincidentally), I've adopted a 'crouch' style, especially at skate parks. Your focus on the texture/surface makes complete sense, because this is the most common challenge of 'landscapes' we face, as we traverse from one texture/terrain to another. Great video, great skating, great commentary/talk. GO BILL!

I've done this style of skating for years without ever thinking of it being anything other than clearing my mind, or often simply commuting. One thing I learned is important is to become comfortable falling in public. To discard the shame. I hardly ever fall now but everyone falls while learning and random members of the public will laugh, shout, try to make a fool of you etc. They're either feeling relief to see you fall because your freedom and skills were making them feel boring or inadequate, or they're feeling second-hand embarrassment because they haven't learned to think beyond that fear and shame of falling. Once you embrace falling as part of learning the world opens up in many ways.

I started getting more into free skating when I took a hard think about how aggressive skating was about trying to use the wheels on your skates as little as possible. Then I started getting into more fun ways to use the wheels, they got bigger, and now I'm much more of a freeskate type of guy. I would say yeah I assault my way around the downtown area of my city a bit, but I also freeskate session a little area when I find a fun one. My tricks do sometimes have a "ta daaa" moment, so I guess that rules them out for Assault skating lol My freeskates have soul plates so I like to do little stalls on stuff and whatnot ;)

Kind of light like a road bike, suspension like a mountain bike. It's a killer on the urban environment and sheds stairs and opens up shortcuts you couldn't dream of on a regular bike. I like skating on paths and the city. I'm interesting in getting better at turning obstacles like stairs into textures as opposed to obstacles. Finding my perfect skate still. I want to see the aggressive skaters on cracks cobblestone and co. With intense speeds skating 30 miles and more. I think they would as much shit into their pants as I do when trying to grind on a high position. Which is normal if you are not used to the other style and especially if you don't have the tools (skates) for that style.

Most people look at us skaters in the street like they have just seen a unicorn, Its fun, and yes skating has been an underrated sport for decades most dont know, some the best skaters in the world have come and gone due to just not being payed nor appreciated like you might with skateboarding or scootering. Keep at it Bill ,you have an ASMR voice very relaxing man.

Yeah I don't understand the infighting that happens between the disciplines of inline skating, it just doesn't seem to make sense. We all love doing the same thing just in a different way it's stupid. We have copped so much Flac from skateboarders and the media in general in the past branding our sport as "gay" and other things so why are we then fighting within the sub disciplines about who's form of skating is better. Assault skating and wizard skating are great examples of skating working together, combining bits and pieces from other styles of skating and combine it into a new style. Who cares what type of skating you do, we all love to skate and seeing more ppl doing it is all I want to see. Also that edit at 7:20 where you land and the track drops was perfect 👌

I've always called this style of skating Urban skating. No rules, not a special genre, just getting from A to B in the most fun way possible.

Hey Bill and Everyone! I quess Assault Skating describes my style to a T. My current and first skates are 3x90 setups. But the wheels are on their way to manyth rotation and im thinking of upgrading my frames. Should I go for a 3x110 (243 in length) or a 4x90 (275 in length). I have a soft boot and would like to stick to it.

Interesting...this type of divide you speak of also occurs in the motorcycle community. The Street riders downplay like stunter, the stunters downplay the track riders, the track riders downplay the cruisers, and so on...etc etc

Great video! Do you have any recommendations for foot pain while inline skating? I keep getting foot pain after about 10 min of skating, all along the bottom of my feet. Also any good recommendation of wheel type for city skating on rough road such as Toronto streets?

The Assault Skaters. Sounds like a movie. Could be. Like City Assault Skaters vs Zombies. I guess an ancient katana would fit nicely to a your skater setup.

I really think there is the need for the assault skating. I have been skating for 1 month after almost 20 years since my last time (just started on aggressive) and, thanks to BSS and Rich Hayter i´m learning power stops and rough surfaces instead of slides and tricks, that are not my thing. I´m not that young anymore, i´m 42, but each fall just make me feel stronger and younger (Sorry for my english, i´m spanish)

Regardless of sport ( skateboarding, blading, skiing etc) this was simply called Shredding in my day.

"So self obsessed they they will actively shit on any inline niche they do not participate in." I don't understand that behavior nor relate. I cannot quad skate very well but I respect them and all their styles of skating. As a rec skater I find all of it fascinating. Wizard, Aggressive, Speed, City skating, Trail skating, Slalom, Cruising, Dancing/Jamming, all valuable to the diversity of our sport.
