Assembling a Yamaha 62t big bore 701 with an ADA head same as 6m6 650, 61x 701 , 62t 701 or 64x 760

In this video I go through all the steps of assembling a Yamaha 62T big bore engine with 85mm Wossner pistons with an Ada Girdled head. This video will work with Yamaha 6m6 650 , 61x 701, 62t 701 or 64x 760 engines as they all assemble the same.

awesome video! Quick Question... im rebuilding a motor that need a top end (62T/61X SJ). right now the cases arent split yet but the cylinder work and all the parts are here and ready. I want to split the cases while i have it apart to replace the old crank seals. Is there any seals in the center of the crankshaft that go bad between the two cylinders in the center of the cylinders.. like the kawasaki 440/550s & 650s too i think had the orings on them on a spinning metal seal that required basically a crank rebuild to replace... Just wondering if i should change the crank if the crank is fine and has no play or has had any issues in the past and has low hours but is from my 2001 SuperJet so not exactly new either, age wise..

@@EricksonMachinePerformance At first I thought the 61X cylinder was for the single carburetor ski and the 62T cylinder was for the twin carburetor ski but I have a 61X on my twin carburetor Superjet so that is not the case. The only difference I see is the reinforcements on the 62T cylinder, but I don't know if the ports are the same on a 61X cylinder, a 62T and a 64X.

Basically marine grease does great as assembly lube. Lighter application on metal.

Marine grease works fine. But I'd recommend Assembly Goo. Its the best for seating orings! But most grease will do the trick

I'm wondering about the washers that the diagrams call for. I had the cylinders sent out and machined and the local dealership ordered new piston kits & rings based on the machinist's recommendation and machining. The parts diagram shows plate washers on either side of the pin bearing and mine had them when I removed the pistons. I had one that was broken on the damaged piston. I measured the new pistons against the old to compare the pin-bearing clearance and it appears to be the same. altho the new bearings are a little longer than the originals there is still room for the plate washers and it moves freely. How much play or clearance should there be between the pin bearing and the piston to accommodate expansion on a cast WSM piston. I was concerned about not having the washers but I see you did not install them with this assembly. I'm working on a 98 Yamaha 701 62t w new pistons 005 over. I've worked on car and truck motors but I'm just getting familiar with the 2 stroke world. I've ordered 4 new washers that the parts manual shows but now I'm concerned that with the new bearing being longer than the original it may expand and bind. The size or free play difference in the new bearing versus the old with the washers has me concerned about it having too much free play side to side. Is this an issue? should I simply disregard the washers? Leave them out as you did? I would appreciate your recommendation.

Great content. Is the red stuff on the crankshafts coupler end greas? Also, is it possible to surface the mating surface of the two crankcase half's?

No it's not grease I have a red oil that that I put on after I clean crankshafts. And no you cannot machine the mating surfaces of a crank case. If you do it will shrink the bore size for the bearings. You can only clean or machine the mating surfaces that get gaskets so between the cases and the cylinder and the intake and the cases. Not the 2 case halves. Also case haves are machine together in pairs you cannot interchange them. Mixing and matching case have can cause premature bearing issues.

On aftermarket pistons they aren't needed. Also many people don't use them on oem rebuilds without issue

Hi Mark, At 14:41 you can see a little hole in the side of the piston. Why do some of forged pistons have this hole in the side and some don't? For example, I had some Wiseco pistons that were part numbers for an 1100 Yamaha Waveraider and they looked identical to the 701 Waveblaster pistons EXCEPT the 1100 Waveraider labeled pistons had that little hole in the side of them, but the ones labeled for the 701 Waveblaster didn't have the hole. It's a vent for the piston to help cool the crown and lubricate topend bearing. 61x don't have. 62t and 64x do. They are interchangeable. Either can be used.

When installing the flywheel do you have to use lapping compound and spin the flywheel a few times the make sure the surfaces sit even?

Bearing retaining compound on the cases for the bearings. Thin coat of.honda bond on 1 side of cases very little is needed

My question is, would it be worth rebuilding a 2002 700cc wave runner that has no compression in the rear cylinder, not sure why yet!! I am willing to tackle this myself, I did pay a boat company, in Mooresville N. Carolina $2,100 just 2 years ago! Put maybe 15 hours on it before it failed again . Most likely. If u want to take it apart and email me pictures. Normally zero compression is a hole in the piston from Lean , or detonation, or a rod failure

Question: pulled cylinder to clean, long story. But this is a new sj. I put cylinders back on and without head I turn coupler to move pistons. Front one is very tight on down stroke and back piston is what feels good to me. But front has a small blow back around Reed side where top dot is on piston. Back piston don't do that. Trying to turn coupler it gets tight as balls. This normal? Hard to explain but think you'll understand my question. Thanks

there should be pressure on the down stroke IF the intake and reeds are installed But it should NOT be as tight as you are describing and they should both feel the same. Please send me a Facebook PM with video so i can see whats going on and get you fixed up

Girdle kits basically sandwich the cylinder to the cases. The way many 2 stroke cylinders are if you don't girdle them and you raised the compression or put a heavy exhaust you can either crack the cylinders or the sleeves. I think I explained in the 61x cylinder porting video where I show a cylinder cutaway

What about cleaning the loctite in the case holes where the jugs bolt onto what tap do I need to buy

there isnt loctite on the hardware. and if someone put it washing in a wash tank and blowing out is good. ALSO you dont want to clean holes with a TAP. you can use a thread chasing tool to clean the threads )or a thread forming tap) but normal thread cutting taps remove material which you dont want to do on an already tapped hole.
