Growing up in America, we didn't really get to see all the FIM GP's on TV. I had to rely on magazines like Cycle News, American Roadracing, etc. Another publication, Motocourse, hard copy publication , the aftermath of the season, I would read about these races. 40 years later, I get to watch these races, very special for me, thank you for this.

Same here in the UK,we got occasional races like this but they were never advertised

USA was completely dominant for a decade. I wonder what reasons they had for not publicising such a great sporting time for your country.

@@demonmonsterdave in order to answer that question, I feel that I am not qualified to answer that, we should get assessment from the media during that era. My first response, I deleted because it was too long. Yes, I've always wondered why we didn't get much coverage on this. I've only watched the 89 race in Germany and France. As for the US races, I was actually at the 88, 89, and 93 and 94 grand prix as well as 2008, at Laguna Seca in California. If anyone who worked in the media during that era, please chime in.

After 9 years of posting this video, I'm still happy to see an exciting race like this. The Hondas are much better in corners and Lawson's Yamaha is faster on the straights....The Golden Age of Motorcycling, Amazing.

I so dearly miss this unsanitized version of Assen, with all of its weird meandering non-straights and corners that shouldn't be corners but they are. They lost a lot of its character when the track was shortened and redesigned.

Great video. This was the first Dutch TT I watched on TV, together with my father who visited the TT Always in th 50's. I still remember the typical starting procedure. Less than 5 years later when I had my drivers licence I drove with my car on the track. Those days it was part of the public road. In 1992 they closed it for traffic, because there were too much amateur racing drivers in the weekend :)

Great race from back in the day, the golden-age of 2-strokes and Americans winning the championships. Fast Freddy lived up to his name, until he DNFed and Steady Eddie did the wise thing in backing off to conserve his championship chances. I was surprised at how fast and fearless Raymond Roche, the flying Frenchman was. Also notice how many back-markers there were that had to be avoided and used to advantage, something not seen in modern Moto GP.

Incredible that Sheene was still capable to compete against these competitors on old machinery

I was never a big fan of the push starts- it just added another element to something catastrophic happening at the start - I remember KR trying for YEARS for a rule change- So as usual, they finally changed it after someone got hit and killed at the start of a 250 race- (Can't remember the details, but I remember someone lost his life)-
