Accents are ok, we don’t have to encourage learners to sound like native speakers (which native speaker are we talking about anyway?), just to make sure that they can pronounce the sounds, particularly the consonants, correctly, with appropriate stress and intonation, and can understand the features of connected speech, and be understood. Some learners may want to do this, but I think it is up to them.

Agreed. After all, throughout the land, native speakers have different dialects which accentuate words differently.

agreed. by "native speakers" he probably means white people in the US. There are many ways to speak English

Actually mean ANY native speaker regardless of the native English accent someone is interested in using
@emmaolivia2824 Жыл бұрын
@@TuziTalks Right, so it would be totally fine for you if students speak with African American vernacular English, Jamaican English or a thick Irish accent? You are privileging certain English dialects over others while dismissing foreign accents as inadequate and undesirable. In other words, you are being racist.

I was shocked and disappointed when you said that the goal is for students to sound like native speakers. You should check out Pavlenko (2003) who points out how damaging this can be to students, especially adult students, who will never sound like a native speaker and will basically be made to feel like failures for never living up to this impossible standard. In communication, both native and non-native speakers must negotiate for meaning by asking for clarification, slowing down if necessary, restating things. The burden cannot just be on the non-native speakers to make communication comfortable for the natives.

Respectfully disagree.

@@TuziTalks Please explain exactly why you disagree. Why should students be made to feel inadequate for having a foreign accent? Honestly, your whole perspective on this come across as xenophobic, and with all due respect, I feel bad for your students.

Agree 100% he comes across as super racist with his views on accents. so disappointing from an academic like this. luckily, the field as a whole is moving on past these types of ideas which cause our students so many problems and make them afraid to speak out of fear of judgement. Honestly Tuzi comes across as a bad teacher. As a non-native English speaker, I will always have an accent, and I'm proud of it. My accent is part of my identity. I'm proud to be an immigrant, and our students should also feel this pride.
@RosaRosario-rv1he Жыл бұрын
@@chadpowers9035 I am also a proud immigrant. I'm a polyglot and accomplished linguist, yet I still have a strong accent. I am proud to be Colombian, and I never try to appear as anything else. Why would I try to emulate native speakers? I have gotten degrees in English, worked in English and lived for over a decade in the USA and my accent has never been a problem. Por eso me choca la gente racista como Tuzi

Hi Dr. Frank Tuzi, It is great to see you on youtube I was your classmate at IUP. I remember you well. You were an outstanding doctoral student. I am not sure if you remember me. I am a Thai man studying in the master's class there. After finishing the MA, I went to New Mexico for the doctorate. Then I came to work in Thailand, my home country. I teach at Chulalongkorn University. If you want to visit Bangkok, I can be your host. I hope to hear from you. Sincerely, Arnon
