Same as grafting l guess. I hope they see this comment before it’s too late.

You could try I agree. It’s important to do it quickly, to try to match up the cambium layer exactly and to take the leaves off and heavily prune the crown, to reduce wind rock. It is probably not the best time of year for it, it’s better when the sap is just about to rise, worth a try. Take some pictures. A great story to tell if it did actually work. Ask a local farmer, cider maker or apple grower, they will be able to do it. You could try to match the break, or cut a new surface with VERY sharp tool. Also splint it with wood.

Dear Stephanie, I'm sorry you lost a tree in the wind storm. I planted a 7 ft. flowering pear tree in front of my condominium 12 years ago to shade the windows of the master bedroom and now it's taller than our 2 story home. We had a night of high winds recently and I watched the tree through my window bending to the wind. I checked my tree when it became light outdoors to find it standing strong. It has provided much needed shade in summer and allowed the sun to warm us in the winter. Here in Michigan the colors of fall were stunning as usual. It was a great investment.

Ornamental pear trees are very soft wood and get easily damaged in wind.
@staceyschmidt31493 күн бұрын
I would never plant ornamental pears _specifically_ because the minute they actually become a beautiful, nice-sized tree, the next storm that comes along will often split the trunk in two and you're out a tree and the (often) last 6-8 years of growing that one. You're far better off putting in a slower-growing, solid tree that will last for a hundred years.
@hollykeller15453 күн бұрын
Gorgeous Bradford Pears with their heavy horizontal lower branches break much more easily than some others like the ones I plant called Cleveland Pears. They might have even better ones now.

Ornamental pear trees are prone to weakness. In my city, the landscape department used to use them quite extensively along the roadsides because they grow quite quickly (and they are beautiful in bloom, particularly). They've since cut most of them down as they had become a road hazard from trunks shearing off with no apparent cause other than the weight of their own branches! Even without high wind they can go. They almost implode. The sound it makes when the tree splits is one you never can forget. I can attest to this myself as the home we bought 23 years ago used to have two gorgeous Bradford pear trees in the front. Both split down the trunks without warning. One narrowly missed damaging our neighbors' car. The other blocked our front door until we had someone come out to clear it with a chain saw. It worries me that some of my neighbors still have their original Bradford pears with children's swings in them. Truly, they give no warning before they fail.

Sorry to see the damage in the garden. There goes the partridge in a pear tree on the first day of Christmas but there's still hope for the turtle doves on day two. Relieved to know Philip made it home safely despite having to drive in that terrible storm. Thankfully even the Dutch rice pudding and cherry-topped vlaii made it in one piece in spite of the rough weather. I think the Pennsylvania Dutch version which is similar to a pecan pie is called shoo-vlaii pie. 😋

Very sorry about the loss of your lovely pear tree. RIP. It’s a shame there’s no way to repair it. There is a chance it could grow back from the stump through, if the roots were not damaged, next year it could regrow. I wouldn’t dig it up yet, give it a little TLC and what it needs, and let’s see if it comes back. The winds were very strong. Glad everyone else is well. That Galahad is a little stinker, so adorable and affectionate, like a little doll. And of course, Phillip is a gem, we love him. Stephanie you are a true princess, a fitting tribute given to you at the end, you are so very appreciated. Take care of yourself, you do a lot, so make sure you get enough rest and relaxation.
