Dear Markom. I'm sitting here and trying to organize my asset library to get a cohesive experience with catalogues like "Material", "models", "volumetrics", "node groups" etc and there is something that I'm not understanding here. I can get it working by going to all (where I see everything because the blend files are in the correct file patch directory) but lets say I have a free sample pack that contains 2-3 really cool materials that I would like to move over to the proper "Material" catalogue/folder as seen in this video, whats the best way? Here's what I do today: I start by opening my "MyAssetLibrary.blend" file. I then have to filter by "All" in the asset browser, find the relevant materials, drag those to a couple objects in the scene and save the file. These 2-3 materials are now randomly saved to something in this file which means that I can now mark them as assets, save the file again, and finally now I can filter by "current file" and drag the materials over to the Materials catalogue. Is this really the most efficient way of doing this? I feel like I'm missing something obvious here?!

A quick secret tip. If you have an object with texture, it will show up in the asset preview with that texture. And if you make colour jpg’s and use them as texture, you can even use that on your object. And here’s the big thing. The texture node only needs to be present in the material. Not connected. Give the object a UV map and make a texture node with your desired texture. Assign it to the faces you need to show coloured in the preview. Hey presto. It shows up in the assset preview.

It's really not that quick, I found you need to decide an asset library structure, you need to put like assets files in the same folder and save those original files (DON'T DELETE THEM) after creating the asset lib or adding to an existing one, and you may get your objects in pieces so just selecting them and marking assets may not be enough unless you want a thousand pieces. Remember to turn the asset library filter off when deciding which assets goes to which category. I made a crap load of mistakes before getting it figured out ... and I am still working on it hours later.

So... it won't just loan .blend files we put into the asset library folder? We have to open each individual blend file, select everything, add them all as assets and then re-save that blend file as a NEW blend file? I reallllllly hope they improve this feature. It shoudl autoload any .blend files I plop in the asset library folder I shouldn' thave to resave and manually add everything. Geez.

I want to convert from my years n years of experience in Sketchup to Blender. but I find the file management library system is abit different. Ie, the material shared between colleague sometime doesnt have material maps or the bump map is missing.

Helpful! Does the Asset Library let you save collections? Because many many items are multiple parts, not just one merged together mesh. Can this also save items that are FBX and OBJ files? hundreds of thousands of assets are in those formats so I'm wondering!
@TommyGunsXL
@TommyGunsXL 2 жыл бұрын
No, you can't save collections :/ Also when multiple objects share the same rig, it will save one rig for each object. So you have to delete all armature modifiers (except one "main rig") before you save and assign them to the rig again after importing.

Thank you! I played with this a year or so ago but yet to really organize any models. Time to get better organized. Curious if newer versions or even this version could organize Geometry nodes or Python Scripts as well?? That’s what I was searching for and haven’t found it yet. I’m always having to remember what I named something in an old file, find it on my hard disk or on my archive drive and append or copy / paste for models, materials, and scripts. I’ve been using Trello to save more finished items and share with a few others collaborating on projects but it can be cumbersome as well, using the browser and managing downloads directory.

Why I don't like AB (Asset Browser). If you DD (Drag&Drop) an object from the Browser into a scene and edit that object and re-assign it will not update the original object it came from. So there is no re-assigning/saving. Any changes are the cache in that scene. If you close blender and re-open DD, that same object in it has not been updated. You would need to open the .blend file from where it came, change the object and save that .blend file. My other big problem with AB is. In order to assign a multipart model, you need to Join the parts, thus making editing the model difficult. It's like making a many layered Photoshop file and not saving as a PSD only a JPG. You lose the ability to edit the file. You can parent the parts, but it becomes a mess in AB because each part of the model is shown as its own thumbnail, not a thumbnail of the parented model. I'll stick with the Add-on AM (Asset Manager) for now
