Prince are a forgotten Japanese automaker who started out making airplanes, but turned to auto manufacturing after WW2. Their most notable creation was the Skyline, first built in 1957.
In 1962 Prince became the first Japanese factory to enter an FIA sanctioned race, entering a Skyline GT in the Liege-Sofia-Liege rally. After the first running of the Japanese Grand Prix in 1963, Prince rejuvenated their Skyline with a new straight 6 engine, and entered an entire fleet of them for 1964, only to be shown up by a privately entered Porsche 904. This inspired Shinichiro Sakurai (the designer of the Skyline) to create the R380, a near aerodynamic copy of the 904, built on a Brabham BT-8 chassis, but still using the Skyline straight 6 engine. After spending 1965 testing and setting multiple speed records, Prince entered 4 of the R380's for the 1966 Japanese Grand Prix, at the newly finished Fuji Speedway. Although a privately entered Porsche 906 ran a full 2 seconds faster per lap, a crash on lap 42 ended Porsche's race, giving Prince a 1-2 finish.
At the end of the year Nissan would purchase the Prince car company, but Sakurai and his staff continued their work on the R380. The R380-2, R381, and R382 were all designed and made at the Prince factory under the Nissan banner. The R383 was finished for 1970 but never raced due to a horrible crash on the Daiichi banking of Fuji Speedway. With that, Nissan focused on their Datsun racing program, which was doing quite well in the United States by that point.
