This clip show the assisting of the MSC Zlata R.
I tried to make some "before" footage when unmooring the tug, but the footage is very shaky. I have ordered a 3-axis gimbal today to solve that problem :)

No music, no commentary, just the sounds of the engines and the sights of the ships, the tug, and the sea. The skill of everyone involved, especially the pilots, is tremendous.I subscribed to this wonderful channel long ago. The great poet Walt Whitman would write eloquently about these modern operations today.

no irritating commentaries, no stupid musics just those engines together with those smooth maneuvers, are enough to make me relax...

Really interesting video. Great to watch. I think tugs are amazing! Just so manoeuvrable, but that is down to whoever is at the controls. Great skill. I retired from the UK rail industry in December 2018 after 41 years, but if I hadn’t gone on the railway, I would have liked to work on tugs. Great job, Skipper!

Stimpy&Ren This tug is a Voith Schneider Water Tractor, so has two propulsion units under the hull, probably roughly in line with the wheelhouse, which have cycloidal blades which can all turn independently, thus giving the tug the ability to stop, go astern or go left or right instantly, as the tug skipper requires - these are controlled via a wheel. Azipods are usually fitted to cruise ships, these are self-contained propulsion units with a controllable pitch propellor within a nozzle / duct, which aids drive the ship in the direction required. The tug equivalent is an Azimuthing Drive, which can be fitted in a similar position to the Voith drive or be placed at the stern of the tug, in place of conventional shafts / prop / rudder or Kort Nozzle. Both systems for tug propulsion have their place, a lot depends on what the tug will be doing (harbour towage, escort, indirect and direct towing), where it will be working (depth or draught available in sea and river channels and berths) together with the designers view on how effective each system is for their tug design. Sorry for my long explanation, but it is a big subject!

What is the reason for these strange shapes of both engine exhausts ? some kind of pink flamingo inspiration ?
@darrenhillman8396
@darrenhillman8396 4 жыл бұрын
nanba25 The exhausts (and superstructure) are shaped so that when the tug is working tight under a ships bow, her superstructure and exhausts are clear of the ships hull. These Antwerp tugs are quite old, so if you want to see how this clearance is achieved on a more modern tug, check out some Damen tug designs (products.damen.com/en/clusters/harbour-tugs).

+Angus Hudson We are only with a crew of 3 on board. The captain is controlling the tug, the 'mate' is doing daily maintenance in the living area of the tug, or relieves the captain (when the mate is training for captain for example). The engineer is watching the engine status, and when something goes wrong he needs to take quick action to solve the problem.

Put the camera down when handling lines for casting off. The boat and your job comes first. And when casting off the bow line take the eye off the bitt and take in the line through the bollard. There is no reason to go back onto the dock to toss it off. Too hands for the boat... damn cameras gonna get somebody killed
