This is not shocking news. So, athlete of the year is based on attendance. No championships, no gold medals, and no ring, but athlete of the year.
@GreatlinClarkFan-c5hКүн бұрын
Right, it's not based on performance solely so her Rookie of The Year award, her 62 broken WNBA records in her first year (more than any other single player's records combined in the history of the league) and her leading the WNBA in multiple stats (unassisted points, combined scoring, assists and 3-pointers) don't count as much as what her impact was on growing the league. They didn't take into account that she took the worst team in the WNBA to 6th place and into the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade. None of that mattered. There are bench warmers who have championship rings who never played a second in the game that will NEVER get Athlete of The Year because they haven't accomplished anything that benefits the league. It's not about personal accomplishment, but about what the athlete has done for others.

Of course they did! First of all, Simone already won it years ago. This year, she didn't deserve it again. Why did Caitlin deserve it over any other athlete on the planet? Let's delve into that... The standard for Time's award is what impact the athlete has on her game, it's not just about their personal accomplishments, but what they did to advance their particular sport. AP's are the same. In Caitlin's case, she brought in $2 billion dollars of new media revenue, millions of dollars in new merch revenue, she earned her team $31 million in more revenue since last year, they are literally building new arenas across the country to accommodate when she comes to town because most WNBA gyms can't contain the demand for fans to see her play so she's adding millions to infrastructure and she is solely responsible for 26.5% of all of the WNBA's economic activity in 2024. That's the monetary impact which no one can deny was the biggest for any one player in the league to contribute. But here's what really set Caitlin apart; Her advocacy for women's basketball. When she would play in an opposing team's town, she noticed that there'd be a massive increase in money being generated besides just selling out the games. She tried to get bonuses for her oppositions' players because if the owners were making more money, she felt that the players should get a cut of that since they were coming to see the home team play, not to see the owners play. She's always advocated for more pay for her colleagues. When they offered her a jet & private security, she asked why was she the only one offered that, why didn't the rest of the league get the same convenience & safety considerations. BOOM! Everybody got jets & private security after CC asked for it. She's always credited her team and her organization and thanked the league and the players that came before her when receiving any of her numerous awards, showing herself to be the epitome of class and of character. She's set a good example of what we would want our little girls to look up to. She's always presented herself in a respectful manner in public and while other were pursuing personal endeavors in their time off, she played golf and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity (not to mention her own foundation that raises tons of money for children). So all in all, she has been the standard of professionalism and of sportsmanship and of giving back to the sport that's given her so much. And she brought millions of new fans to the league that ended up discovering all the other talent that was hidden in the WNBA. Thanks to her bringing eyes to the franchises, now they're getting noticed. And that is why she is the Time Athlete of The Year recipient. AP's standards are the same as Time's. Her rookie year has transcended all other sports figures on the planet and has done more to generate positive growth for the sport of women's basketball and has benefited millions of little girls all over the world.

Caitlin did get a bit cocky in the TIME interview when she discussed being in college vs. the WNBA. Honestly, that is sort of the mid-west mindset of being humble too, not wanting attention. CC also wants to shine the light on others and if she has a bad game, she owns it. I also loved what she stated about the rivalry, it's crazy, neither of them have ever guarded one another. @@WORKSbaby Yep! The Fever knew who was buttering their bread. Every time they'd try to give CC a break, the team would start bleeding points, so CC had to stay in the game. Caitlin averaged 35 minutes per game and played ALL 40 games while almost all her rookie class crapped out with injuries and got benched or just quit halfway through the season. Meanwhile, CC played the ENTIRE season with a gouged eye, migraine headaches, a ruptured ear drum and a sprained ankle. They don't make WNBA players like that. She's harder than diamonds. She's responsible for 48% of her team's points in every game. Those are some crazy numbers.

I would have answered your Indiana take as well but for what purpose? Only a disingenuous h@t3r would have the hypocrisy of requesting that she wins a championship during her rookie year when she accomplished more than A’ja did in her first year by making it to the playoffs for the first time in the last 8 years. While A’ja had to wait an extra year and another 1st overall pick to return to the playoffs. Like I said only a h@t3r.
