Fun fact, shes not a spawn. The way astarion turns the player is the way vampire brides are made in dnd. Shes actually a full vampire but tied to him in a vampire marriage.

@darkurgediaries They are full vampires. The only ties they have to their vampire husband or bride are like a magical marriage bond, which can be annulled. By definition, spawns aren't free willed. Therefore, a bride is not a spawn because she is freewilled.

So for those who are unaware, Astarion doesn't make you into "just some spawn" which he says. He describes the ritual he performs on you, which is the Dark Kiss. The Dark Kiss is where a true vampire administers 3 bites, draining their partner to the edge of death... and just before they die, they are given the vampire's blood to force the transformation while they are still alive. A vampire bride/groom (interchangeable) is not at all like a spawn. It maintains its whole self, and actually maintains its own free will. The downside is as a bride/groom you have no idea that you suffer from the hunger. You do not feel it, but it eats at your body and mind. If the vampire who performs the dark kiss does not teach their mate how to know when they need to feed and how... it can literally drive them insane. If he died during the ritual you'd have been turned into a Volorg which is just soo so unfortunate.

Okay, I've gotta throw this out there because it's driving me nuts that no one has brought this up. Throughout this scene, Astarion keeps using the word "consort" to describe how he wants Tav/Durge to fit into his life. A consort is a married partner to royalty/nobility. They enjoy the lifestyle and some sort of title but don't have the same level of political power or influence that their spouse does. An easy example is Prince Phillip, who was prince-consort to Queen Elizabeth. The man was very much involved in the goings-on of the family politics, but he wasn't the monarch. He also was Elizabeth's husband and fathered her children. When i see people react to this scene, the word "consort" is bandied about as a negative. I think it's because people misread "consort" as "concubine." But that's not what happened because Astarion basically proposes in this scene, and I'm not over it. Calling her "consort", bet that asshole is just trying not to say "wife." 😢

In a lot cultures "consort" does in fact mean concubine. There have been numerous Empires, such as Imperial China, Byzantine Empire, Ottoman Empire to name a few that the word consort would specifically indicate that the woman was in a concubine relationship. In Islamic Empire's it also pretty much meant that the woman was a slave and NOT married to the ruler, but owned by them and in a sexual relationship. In the modern day most people only hear the word "consort" in relation to the moderm day royal families, which certainly has much nicer implications than the historical usage of the word. I think Astarion's ascended interactions with Tav are so interesting as there is a lot of room for interpretation with the language he uses. Consort is a bit of a loaded word and I would say the historical meaning of it certainly implies more of a master/slave type relationship. So is Astarion calling you his Princess Tav Consort or his Consort slave/plaything? I've been going back in forth in my brain trying to decide is this showing us a happy and consensual BDSM type relationship or is this abusive or heading towards it? I think either point could be reasonably argued and I kind of love that, there is a lot to unpack with Astarion's romance. I finished my ascended play through last night and after defeating the brain, had a follow up romance scene with Astarion. There was an option where you can say "I think we should break up" Astarion laughs at you and says: "Remember, you are mine. The tadpole is gone, which means your future is mine to decide. How lucky are you that I chose you as my consort. Chose you to help me take Baldur's Gate, then sit by my side as I rule it. There's no backing out now - we'll be together forever. ~ I can promise you that ~" Certainly get more of the M/s vibe overall from him, but perhaps that's what Tav wants. People chose to live in those types of power dynamic relationships IRL and have healthy and happy lives. I wish there was a bit more to the end of the romance, I can see it going terribly or wonderfully for Tav and Astarion. Which I sort of love and sort of hate lol.

@@evievarga i take it to be the more royal meaning because lord astarion is constantly reminding tav, this is OUR power, WE will rule, WE are the most powerful people, this world will be YOURS and MINE alone, etc etc. it’s like the royal position of queen consort. It’s very clear the writers used the dnd dark kiss/vampire bride ritual as the transformation he puts tav through, the process strahd did, which is detailed in van richtens guide to vampires. The vampire lord often gaslights the vampire bride into believing she is a spawn so he can have control but she actually has free will and will figure it out eventually. It’s quite telling when you ask astarion if he will compel you and he avoids the question with another question, “why would I need to?” Even in the new patch 5 after party epilogue we never see him compel tav (her eyes would go red like the other spawn we saw being controlled by cazador, if you notice their eyes go back to normal colors when he dies) also in that astarion tells tav they will drink each others blood, and if tav bites astarion in game nothing new happens (obviously could be a failure on the devs part but I see it as she is already a vampire and just doesn’t know it.) So i believe if they ever did a follow up you’d see a much different dynamic between the two of them in the future once tav figures out she’s a vampire bride and not simply a spawn. Especially if tav is a bhaalspawn, things could get very interesting between them 🤔 could either go darkly romantic OR warring vampires haha! The writing is in the wall and I’m dying to see it.

while some might interpret the scenario as Astarion probably never actually intending to turn you into a true vampire, I like to imagine what he said about probably needing time to adjust as just that: time spent adjusting before completing the change eventually. and considering he's referring to Tav as a consort rather than a concubine or even a pet constantly, I do believe he might actually intend to turn Tav into a true vampire eventually since he knows he wouldn't really have to worry about betrayal in this specific situation where there is a love bond strong enough for them to want to try living eternally together. that and I did read a comment talking about the vampire bride/groom which, if true, only reinforces my thoughts here.

@@Ssekkaha actually the lead writer confirmed that ascended astarion is still himself in a recent ign interview, and even more recently Neil, Astarions VA, explained that when Astarion ascends his mask is no longer on and what you see is who he really was the whole time. His silliness and theatrics were a mask to hide his pain but when he ascends he doesn’t need it anymore. Ascending restores him to the corrupted bastard he always was in life, doesn’t “make him cazador” because he always was corrupted anyway. His official bio confirms that. If you don’t let him ascend, you push him to become a new person, which is fine if that’s your playstyle. But no, he isn’t cazador.

She helped him because she loves him, not for his body or power. I still like the scene after they talk. He becomes more possessive but he is still so sweet to her.

Durge is just so disturbing and weirdly adorable at times, i love it! Plus extra content with Astarion thanks to her but she still screwed up with this scene. And, at least until it is fixed, i will not forgive her for that. She se*ualized Astarion herself in this scene. Astarions real writer calls it the evil not the bad end. This is a roleplaying game but players get shamed here for their choice to help him ascend when you can do far more worse things in the entire game. I hope Larian does something for this scene with patch 6.

@@j.d.4697 the only thing that really makes me prefer ascended vampires to regular ones is that they are not undead and don’t suffer the pain and torment that normal full vamps have that causes them to go mad. And they regain all the benefits of being mortal, able to eat, go in the sun, they have full emotions, etc. the cost is sacrificing 7000 souls but if the player is willing to make the sacrifice I think the reward is worth it myself as a mostly evil player haha. I definitely see how a good player wouldn’t want to do it, but honestly releasing 7000 feral spawn isnt exactly good to do either and it will actually break your paladin oath if you have one, so even then I say may as well let Astarion benefit. He doesn’t suddenly become evil when ascended he just stops hiding his true nature like he was before, Neil Newbon spoke about that!

Definitely do it at least once, its worth seeing! I think it’s all really subjective, and while I thoroughly enjoyed his Spawn path I actually prefer Ascended, it’s just way more to my personal flavor! Ascended is very get-what-you-give and people on youtube tend to only share his reactions to negative dialogue choices. Yes he is on the dark side, but sometimes the dark side can be delicious 😋 The great thing about fantasy games/literature is that we know it’s not real life, so we can have fun exploring the dark side safely. Some people tend to forget that video game choices don’t reflect on who you are irl 😅

If you look at the official dnd guide that covers vampire brides, it states that in most cases, the vampire lord will lie to his bride and make her believe she is a spawn so he can have control, this is why.

He also shares his blood which alone makes it so the player isn't a regular spawn, in the lore at least. The whole thing is kind of confusing with the gameplay/dnd lore differences. Still, regardless of what the ascension haters say about Astarion the fact remains that this scene is basically a marriage proposal, wedding, and wedding night wrapped into one and that is why I have a hard time going the spawn route among other reasons.

@@britt6184 looking objectively Tav is still a spawn even if they are a consort. Per Astarion's words they are a spawn consort and Astarion never says otherwise. More than a spawn sure, but not a vampire. That's fact. And if you play the spawn route Astarion flat out said he almost became cazador. It's really not about hating astarion (I think him and all the other origin characters are great), it is just paying attention to what he says and not putting head canon over what the characters say in game.

If I remember right the makers of the game say that he still loves tav deeply but its an obsessive love not the more healthy one you get if he doesnt ascend. He makes you a actual vampire because he loves you but he wont let you leave him either way if that makes since.

@@DorksidertheGreat there is a secret ending where he allows tav to stay mortal instead of becoming a vampire, and in this secret ending he also allows tav to leave if they want to, he has a lot more depth than people credit him for. The obsessive love notion is a fan theory and not in the dev notes, as I have scoured the internal game files myself to read the devnotes! Either way, I love both spawn and ascended astarion as they each have their own “flavor” and suit different playstyles better ☺️

@@kennedyflint6140 ascended has all of his mortal feelings and emotions returned to him, that’s part of the point of the ritual, the ascension didn’t twist him, he was already twisted and just masking, Neil Newbon spoke about that in one of his streams not too long ago. The mask just comes off when he ascends. He would grieve I think for sure, the nasty things he says like replacing tav are after tav betrays him dumping him and it’s all said to lash back at tav who just broke his heart because the mask goes back on after that and he is protecting himself the only way he knows how.

If you say no, he will say ‘yes’, and you can then either kneel or say no again, and if you say no again, he takes it as a breakup and he leaves the room and you are no longer together.

“He will always see you as degrading yourself if you continue to be with him, but perhaps you want to be degraded.” Many people interpret this line differently. Me personally, i think he sees you as degrading yourself by being with him because he feels you deserve better than him and you’re lowering yourself to be with him, and the last line means “perhaps you want to lower your standards” this is my interpretation. It’s how they translated it in the german version of the game when I played in german!

I’ve been trying to find the dialogue, I’m curious… there was an option when he says something about it will be your last night alive and your last time being warm blooded. Tav could say something like I forgot I would be cold after this. What does he say back? I was already hours too far ahead when I realized that was an option and I’ve been searching for the dialogue.

@@356z if you fail, get says “bad girl” if you succeed, it says he feels you’re lowering yourself by being with him, but perhaps you want to lower yourself and he knows it, something along those lines. It’s been a long time since I did this one as I prefer to hear him say bad girl 😂 😂

It’s in act 3 after he ascends and you are romancing him, you gain the vampire bite ability and when you run in battle you crouch down like astarion does 😆 no visual changes though sadly

@@jonadipsy4638 he can only turn you if he completes the ritual, because if he remains a spawn, spawn can’t create new vampires. But his spawn playthrough route is nice! I won’t spoil anything but it has some really beautiful moments ☺️

@@darkurgediaries aight, well this game would be 10× better if they include a lot of stuff like vampirism for CCs but no you require have a romance with Astarion just for a bite skill, in think the rewards in the game are indeed very bad compared with what you must do for get then in fact is good to see how mods are helping to fulfill the experience and also thanks to Larian for support the mods and modding community, also the only potent reward i saw was the necromancy of thay but you need to be patient lol, have a nice good games
