I love this time of the year. It’s called spring and represents a whole new botanical journey. The winter is almost over, the sun is gathering strength, the days are getting lighter and new blooms come forth.
Some might see a cymbidium orchid as being a winter bloom but these super strong ancients’ really do belong in many seasons and can be easily incorporated in with the brave early flowering spring.
Let me share a visually interesting textural combination well worth it’s place in any environment.
Things together:
- Container of your choice. I used a French inspired vintage white washed tin container.
- Chicken mess to fill cavity of container. You could use a floral pin holder or frog, but the wire mess is an excellent inexpensive medium in which to hold flowers/foliage in position/place.
- A Cymbidium Orchid spike/stem in a colour desired.
- Several various sized aralia leaves, a few pieces of blue gum.
- Viburnum berries & a few sprigs of Tea-tree or Manuka blossom.
- Should you wish to take this design further into spring - how about a few mini tulips!
Thank you to Vania and Darryl at Mangrove Creek farm for your time is sharing what’s involved in growing these magnificent blooms! You can find Mangrove Creek at / mangrove-creek-flower-...

Also thankyou to New Zealand Bloom. They ship the blooms from here in NZ to a market near you.

The red color of the Manuka is so regal and perfect with the orchids! The white tulips you grew are so pretty and as you said pick up the color of the container. So wonderful to gather flowers from one's garden for floral arrangements. I like that you are using the chicken mesh wire instead of oasis.

Good morning from Australia. I love the deep color of the Manuka. It's a lovely centre peice for a table.

Exquisite, Astar! Simply exquisite!!! I’ve never seen Manuka growing, so I’m blown away by that color! Really lovely container, too, which reminds me of garden planters bursting with spring color. Those wee little tulips are precious!!! I think the size works perfectly here to not overwhelm the orchid. Hmm, I’m wondering what flower I’d love to see on the Great Botanical Journey… ! 💐
