Hey there CB radio magazine. With a little help from my mother, I am reaching out to comment here and say thank you and express my gratitude for your making this video here as I see available on KZbin. Just quickly, I do not want to waste your time or interfere with your activities but would like to leave a little bit of my experience. An uncle of mine and then latter my Dad had a mobile CB radio in his Oldsmobile. So I would turn it on and talk and sometimes ask for radio checks. Once I heard what sounded like some who had louder audio than others so i asked them over the air, "how did you get so loud sounding" and the answer I got was, "I am using a power mike". So that was my very first time hearing a power mike over the air. It is indeed interesting sounding to hear someone talking on a power mike over the CB radio airwaves. It was quite some time ago. Well, now I have stumbled upon this video and have learned that there are power microphones out there available! At first, word of mouth, I learned that a power mic may require a battery. I immediately thought to myself that it is a little bit cumbersome having a battery for the power mic because I am not sure when the battery is getting weak and if the audio, in turn, is getting softer. Unless of course there is a way to monitor the audio like through a talk back speaker. Just some of my thoughts. By the way thank you for showing how the tone can be adjusted by changing the resistor value in the microphone.😀👍
@n4lq
@n4lq Жыл бұрын
I clipped the resistor and the FET went into cutoff and disabled all audio. I then soldered in a 10 meg resistor in series with the 270k and now it sounds great with much better lows. Apparently the results vary due to varying internal resistances of the mic. element and at least some resistance is needed. I also noted that the schematic for the Astatic Trucker II mic uses the same circuit but uses a 15 meg resistor instead of the 270k. Now that makes more sense.

There are a couple other mods I recall seeing where the resistor is replaced by one of a different value to add bass to the microphone audio, and yet another where the fixed value resistor is replace with a variable (too much work for me). I hadn't heard about this one, and it's sure a lot easier than the other two - Thanks for documenting your results with this video 👍

The resistor just needs to be of a rather high value or even open. This circuit has a 270K ohm resistor, when a lot of the other Astatics have a 1.5M ohm. And this affects the tone because of the input impedance. There is a mic that has a variable resistor pot in place of this as a sort of tone control.

Clipping the resistor did result in more bass.

I experienced a weird phenomena by clipping that resistor. I would be talking and after a minute or two, the modulation would start dropping rapidly until there was nothing but carrier. I thought the battery was going out, but checked it and it was still 100%. I Tried a factory mic to be sure it was not the radio experiencing some issue, and all was good. I then put a 1 meg ohm (brown, black, green) resistor back in the empty holes and got super nice audio results. Still experimenting, but for now, I believe by clipping that resistor out of circuit, it may be overloading the transistor and causing it to shut down. Just a thought, and I am not yet conclusive on this.

Surprised no-one is making an Inline Amplifier Module to use with any Stock Microphone - the parts to build an Amplifier for a Microphone are dirt cheap - yet the Microphone Manufacturers are charging a fortune for them. The Schematics for the Old Turner and Astatic Microphones are still available for anyone to build their own Custom Circuits by varying Resistors and Capacitors to your own desired Frequency Response.

@@cbradiomagazine Heil also makes a replacement element. I have tried the W2ENY but not the Heil. Another interesting experiment for powered mic's is using a zinc carbon 9v battery vs. an alkaline and how that can change tone. I came across that from their use in guitar pedals. I like Danelectro 9 volts. Cheers and I look forward to more of your videos.

I got the same problem, my finger touches the screen she squealed likes stuck pig 🤦‍♂️ I would like to try this mod but if I do it may squeal even though my finger isn’t on the screen. I’m going to try to coat it in clear fingernail polish let it dry and see what happens. I do know I get some hell of an audio of its cranked up if I don’t touch the screen of course and that’s what I want to actually do.

@@Fox250R I tried that and what I really need are chokes on the speakers inside the rig. I tried to turn it down and the audio was barely working, tried turning down the box but who talks on boxes turned down below 50%? Right now the only mic that allows me to talk with maximum power and and produce minimum feedback is a Wilson and so I think I may have to strap a capacitor across the mic leads.

Bear in mind that the clipping of the resistor also increases output level. For whatever reason, Astatic chose to use a much lower value resistor for this model, it's usually a 1.5M ohm. They were probably preventing rfi by over modulating. The ceramic likes to see a high input impedance in this fet circuit for a natural tone and transfer of energy.

I own an M6 Silver faced mic, it has a pivot button like most mics. Runs on the 7.5v cylinder battery. The volume knob can pull out of the back. Inside there is a board and more p2p wiring. M6B, while don't own one, as you can see in the video uses a standard 9v, and everything seems to be board mounted, then there is the PTT button vs. PTT lever. As for audio difference, never had an M6B to compare against each other.

Absolutely hated those microphones. I've had 2 of them and I took out that spring metal bar because the PTT button killed my thumb. Very tinny sounding and the PTT switch soon started to rustle in both of them. Loved the Road Devil though. Although the Road Devil was slightly tinny on FM, it sure did shine on SSB on my Dirland Superstar. I would buy the RD again.. 👍

I have changed the resistor value on several of these microphones, the first about ten years ago. With that there was a big difference in output, and the bass was increased significantly. Some later ones I modified did not necessarily change the tone as much. This could be due to the batch of ceramic cartridges used, bearing in mind that the supply and choice of manufacturer was likely limited.
