It is truly amazing that this "Dawn" was composed, arranged it as one song, and was able to perform it by a junior high school students of Japan who were only 14 or 15 years old. Everyone notices that they have advanced playing skills at a young age, but what really should be appreciated the most is that they have acquired compositional skills, including the ability to arrange music, at this age. Moreover, the range of emotional expression and the wide descriptive power of the composition give the impression of a genius inspiration. It's amazing that not only HAL-CA, but all three of them have the ability to compose in three different ways, and they can arranging and playing songs at the age of only teenagers. The variety of songs they compose is wide-ranging, and to us it is as diverse as if we were looking at the 70-year history of Western music. It covers all elements of the UK, US, European and Japan music of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, and is integrated and played with the sensibilities of today's teenagers. How could they have done this in such a short period of time? Perhaps it all started when the three of them grew up in an environment where their parents liked Western music and listened to songs at home as a hobby, and their parents gave children musical instruments to try out. The period when they learned the instrument was probably linked to the brain growth process in the growth period from child to adult. I guess the adults around them were stunned, because they absorbed and grew at an incredible rate. However, it will be unclear whether their songwriting ability came out with because they were growing children, or whether they originally had genius songwriting ability, unless we look at them in the future. Unfortunately, the current Japan music industry does not have an environment that genius talents like them into stars. The general public doesn't like to listen to this kind of music. If we leave them in Japan like this environment, their talent will only be crushed in minor scenes without ever seeing the light of day in the major scenes. I think "Amuse" is out of hand. They should leave early. They should move quickly to their native field, the Western music market, to meet producers and capitalists who find and interest their talent and abilities. The current Japan music industry will not be able to take advantage of their abilities

They're all stars really. Sometimes I see the bass player doing thumb sweeps. That in itself is amazing technique, I can't recall anyone else doing that on bass, but I'm sure there are a few. But they aren't 18 or 19. Once a friend of mine came in the room when I was watching them, and she said "they're just babies!" lol

Miyu starts it off with amazing bass playing and then Hal-ca takes it home with some of the most mesmerizing finger/hand work on a guitar I have ever seen. The drummer is the fickin solid foundation for these two to rock on.

This is Asterism's absolute masterpiece in my opinion. This is the one I'd listen to on repeat, for such a long song it keeps you engaged all way through. I've got about 10 pieces of music by asterism on my playlist (can't beat bandmaid though) The bassist would be my favorite from Japan if there was no Misa!
@VladimirChupin
@VladimirChupin 2 жыл бұрын
In all justice, MIYU should be credited as a better bassist than MISA... and HAL-CA is a better guitarist than Kanami... but BAND-MAID is a better band than ASTERISM 😉 But I would also agree with the statement that the categories of "better" or "worse" are not applicable here. MISA and MIYU are very different, and each is a true master of the craft. They both can play anything they want... or, rather, anything which is needed.
@lurkmerchant

@@VladimirChupin It was the clip you shared with Wave Potter that introduced me to Asterism. Miyu and Hal-Ca are incredible in every aspects. Not just techniques but they definitely have the artistic gift. Because their music conjures images in my mind. The three of them have a great chemistry too. When I first introduced my hubby to Asterism he was just starting to get into Band-Maid. We both agree that Asterism is one of the bests in Japan if not in the world at such young ages. Yet Band-Maid is the music we listen to everyday. Each instrument adding different elements and colors to their sound and elevating their music is just magical.
@VladimirChupin

@@lurkmerchant The same for me. This is what I call "talent." They have some inner quality that allows them to create fascinating mental images in listeners. Technical prowess just "clears of the path," so to say, and lets them create more intricate and complex images. Many people mention David Gilmour as an example of a "good non-shredding guitarist." I fully agree. He's got the talent and was able to project mental images into people's minds. If he would be able to wield a guitar better, his power would increase greatly. HAL-CA and MIYU are perfect masters on their respective instruments, and they also have the talent. It's perfection upon perfection.
@Kmudaify

A better late than never reply. Rock music evolves. In the 70s, great guitarists were great not necessarily because of their ability to shred, but rather their ability to evoke emotion through their playing. With Eddie Van Halen, that started migrating over to "shredding", where being the fastest took precedence over any attempts to evoke emotion within a song. Hal-Ca has brought that full circle in that first and foremost, she is an emotional player in that her playing evokes emotion. But she's doing it while shredding. She's taken the best of both eras and combined them into one, which makes her really special. Miyako from Lovebites is another Japanese guitarist with this ability.

I believe this is only your second reaction to Asterism, so I'm re-posting my background write-up on them. I think in terms of raw virtuosity, they are the best power trio since Cream. And I am taking into account Hendrix, Rush, the Police, Green Day, SRV and Double Trouble...all of them. Asterism are an instrumental power trio from Fukuoka, Japan. They consist of: Haruka Noma, guitars (“HAL-CA”) Miyu Yoshinaka, bass Mio Yoshinaka, drums They were formed in 2014 when Noma was 11 and the brothers were 12 and 14 respectively. They were all playing at a talent fair for young musicians in their hometown, when one of the music scouts noticed them, had a hunch and suggested they play together. Most of their current youtube catalogue is fan-made live video footage, much of it at the Hard Rock Café in Fukuoka. There are also a few clips from their one tour in the U.S., when they played Austin and Los Angeles. They are all phenomenal talents, but the big draw has been Noma, known by her first name Haruka or by her stage name Hal-Ca. She has been likened to a reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan all in one. Even in the Japanese scene, with its overload of extraordinarily technical shredders, she stands out. She also writes most of the band’s music. Miyu is a virtuoso on the bass, plays both 4-string and 7-string, and has his own shred solos in a number of their songs. Best clips to start with are: “Rising Moon” (their first professional MV): kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5fbfpxmd91nrpI “Blaze” (Live): kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2KzqZ6mbdF6d9U “Light in the Darkness” (Live): kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6Hbf5aQpLOdjLc “Yunagi” (Studio live): kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnzNn6egpdOhbbc “Dawn” (Live): kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKa0gal_g6-Wd5I To see Haruka practicing at home, these are fun: “Practice Homework”: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXfQanV4rNicntk kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYHUoadtpd12pbM kzbin.info/www/bejne/moHZdHp-i8hneZI kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKWzkKJol7SdrKM kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJqyloKtlL6tg7s kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHLSh4ejfL90iZI kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJWUlaqvaJujpbc kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqW3nmWBhLynldk kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHenpKajhtOhabs kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYOqq4KmYtx5qpY

This reaction was my introduction to the wonderful sound-world of Asterism. The album version is fantastic, with multiple layers of guitar and bass. But this live version absolutely smokes! Haruka is always able to distill down her parts in their live shows, with Miyu and Mio more than holding their own. The ending almost always brings tears to my eyes. Yes, finally back to ASTERISM! "DAWN" might be my favorite form their first full length album "IGNITION" (2018), the first step to their more progressive direction. Hal-ca (the pronunciation for Haruka, her real name) is one hell of a guitarist (that solo section at the end 😍) and Miyu is part of my "Mi" family bassists I adore: MISA, Michiko (Koga), Misaki (Fujiwara), MINA and Miyu. And last but not the least, Mio who is capable of amazing things behind the drum kit but he just let the other shines, like a great teammate and musician would do. ASTERISM latest album "Guerinca" is in my top 5 albums of 2021. Is there anything more this instrumental 3 piece can do to amaze me? What? They sing now?? But that is a story for another time...

I think she also did the vocals for a cover they did of RATM’s Guerilla Radio on one of their EPs. Hal-ca has a pretty decent singing voice and Miku and Miho do backing vocals. It’s interesting that Hal-ca has said that being an instrumental band means that their music can travel well - avoids the complaint that “I would like them if I could understand what they’re saying”.

Treat yourself and see this high quality studio live version. And have fun spinning around the room with the 360 video kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIWwqHx5ibRoeMk Haruka (aka Hal_Ca) was 17 at the time of this performance, and the two brothers around 17 and 19. This song is almost more of a rhapsody than just a song. I have to admit, when I first found these people around 2018, I was just almost as impressed with their swagger as with the world-class musical chops.

One ass kicking tune! I know it's cliched but Hal-Ca, at least in this tune, reminds me somewhat of Hendrix.

Everything you read about this band I gave you all the information pertaining to this amazing band, I gave you several links when you did Gun Fire last year, but you were stuck on the poppy music of band maid. I guess we all have our favorite bands. There are 4 amazing guitarists that I consider top-notch Hal-Ca is a beast and is my number one, then Miyako comes in second, Ayu Gusfanz is third (Indonesia guitarist) last but not least is Midori comes in in 4th place. Several come in 5th place like Mitsuru formerly with Bridear now has in between projects nowadays she is Jammin with Lisa-X and Junna, another Indonesian guitarist would be Melsickscreamoannie you gotta check out Ayu Gusfanz (Only 16 years old as of now) she is also a beast on guitar watch her do a cover of Satriani's "On Peregrine Wings" she was 14 on this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGfbdY2je76Xors

People gonna kill me (sorry Vlad) but... I've had so many years of jamming, playing thousands of notes per second but not making any emotional connection or saying anything beyond "check this out" playing in front of flashing lights. I've followed the Astro kids for a few years and have really dug their attitude, energy and in-your-face performance. But I can only take a tune or two and I'm out. When I heard HAL-CA sing, I thought wow, this is great. And I'm just hoping they start writing from from the heart and less from the caffeine. I'll continue to check them out along with D_Drive and other shredding bands just for the hell of it. But I need substance now... bands like Jinjer, Band-Maid and The Warning give it to me. And if I had to bet, so will Asterism in a few years.

Asterism is to me the most interesting and exciting band out of all the instrumental bands from Japan. They are versatile and not just shred fest. Onset and Dawn are my top instrumental classic. I'm sure in a few years time Asterism will start writing even more heartfelt music. Afterall they were still in teens when this came out. It takes life experience to write music from heart.

No problem, Tom. To each his own 😉 I was speaking yesterday with Alan precisely about this. There are many great bands, and if you have found a band that becomes your pillar of strength, you are a lucky guy. BAND-MAID is still unapproachable in greatness for me. But ASTERISM is growing quickly, and they also have the same rare quality in their music: it speaks to me. If you would ask me about Jinjer and The Warning, I would say that they are very good, but I don't like the message they bring. I understand what The Warning is saying, and their message is that of oppressed women who angrily pour their frustration out to the world which tries to chain and fetter them. I sympathize with it, no doubt, but I don't want to discuss reality from this point of view. Life is hard, yes, and if you oppress people, they are going to rise against you. The Warning are very angry in their attitude. But I fully understand that a lot of people love The Warning's anger. Japanese kids obviously grow in a more comfortable and friendly atmosphere than the kids in Mexico. So, they have nothing to revolt against. I like their message more. It's an amazing country where even the odd people like MISA and Kanami can still thrive without being denigrated and excluded.

@@lurkmerchant Agree, Fume Z. Although D_Drive is pretty hot, too. But for a trio, Asterism is awesome, especially their performance attitude. But you're right. I think they just need to marinate more in their music and decide what they want it too be... and what audience they want to reach (which most bands find hard to figure out because usually, it's only about the music).🤘
