Church and Gunfire are from a concept album that they recorded about the 1937 Geurnica massacre in Basque, Spain by Franco. Working with the Nazis, they waited until the village residents gathered for church, then went about carpet bombing them for several hours. Following this, I'd recommend Faced/Burned from the same album.

The live-in-studio videos are great for audio quality, but will of course always lack the great energy and emotional feedback of performing in front of a live audience. They did have a phase when they did "battle sessions" in the studio, trying to convey some of that energy, but I'm guessing they decided to hold back on that playfulness for these songs, as they are from a concept album concerned with war atrocities. As you mentioned Rush, I feel like calling attention to Asterism's great cover of _YYZ._ But it might be a bit early to go down the rabbit hole of all the great cover songs they've played over the years (my favorite being SRV's _Scuttle Buttin')._ We should probably explore their own discography a little bit more first. Like _Light In Darkness, Stars,_ and maybe _Blaze_ (although make sure to avoid the music video, which is not very good). I personally really love _Museum of Death_ and _Faced/Burned,_ from the same album as _Church_ and _Gunfire._ But those are perhaps less conventional, and not everyone's cup of tea. A more conservative suggestion would probably be _Rising Moon,_ which is more of a straightforward rock song. Not that it makes it sound any better, but it was written back when Haruka and Miyu were only 12 years old, which is pretty insane.

Thanks for the good info and advice. I've always been one for less conventional (e.g. When I was pretty young I was attracted to stuff like early Pink Floyd, if you're familiar with albums like Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Saucerful of Secrets). But of course, less conventional can also miss for any given listener, so just have to take each one as it comes. But I'm all for trying! I had no idea they covered YYZ; I understand why I'd want to wait to hear it, but it's going to be tough :)

For the best of that insane swagger, try their cover of Loudness’s In the Mirror, with big deal Maki Oyama (currently with Aldious) as guest vocalist, filmed from front row of a very intimate show. Note that their newest material has HalCa singing. I love their album of anime theme interpretations, even tho I don’t know the original pieces. And honorable mention to their live in studio version of Van Halen’s Jump, where they not only cover their three parts, but also get the vocal and keyboard parts in in bass and guitar well

Agree with the comparison to Rush. The usual song form is A-B-A or A-A-B-A and they seem to be using about five or six themes and repeating them. It's not as linear as King Crimson but they're kinda getting there. The thing is, the A theme in this one is very _very_ cool. IMO Haruka is such a lyrical player. She phrases in complete sentences but doesn't run on mindlessly. I like her style. A KZbin tip: to go back or forward one frame use , or . (lowercase < and >)

Agree on Rush and King Crimson. I know about the hotkeys for jumping spots, but they sometimes act finicky with how my recording software works. I need to figure that out.

@@DadDaughtersandDrinks Yeah, that's just the KZbin browser player. Any other software will do their own thing. It'd be nice if there was an ISO standard. The great thing about standards is everybody gets to have their own!

It's strange - before I start recording, I test it and space bar pauses, < > ff/rw correctly, etc. Then when I'm reacting the buttons just stop working. I'm wondering if my recording software has some kind of hot-key mapping that's overtaking the KZbin key controls.

"Church" and "Gunfire" are two songs with different atmospheres. "Church" is a calmer and more emotional song. It's impossible for them to headbang in a song like this, right? Lol😂

This is , as others have said , from a " Concept Album " - GUERNICA . Although this stands alone - as with any concept album it's always better to listen to the tracks in the correct order .

Yeah, I had no idea and will definitely give that a go! I think this may be the first time I've heard of an instrumental concept album (although I'm assuming the other tracks are all instrumental, which they may not be). I also have a suspicion I may be about to be inundated with people pointing out famous instrumental concept albums!

anything from the "360 Battle Sessions" (another set of live-in-studio) is fun to watch, just simply because _you_ get to move the camera around (note: there are some non-360 Battle sessions ... no camera control ; just fyi). _155_ and _Rising Moon_ are their 2 earliest songs , simpler construction but still very good. my favorite version of the latter is from "Music Revolution" (i know YT sometimes doesn't like links in the comments, so your search phrase is gonna be "hal-ca final stage") , just simply because it's their first live show recording (at least as far as i'm aware) , exactly 1 year after they joined together , ages 12/12/14 , and it's just fun seeing them already establish their Rock Star™ personas so early (even though it's not the cleanest version of the song). i think once you get one of the early songs and then something from Anemetic (probably Unravel - that's the most popular one ; but i'm partial to the collab they did with a singer called PelleK, on a song called _Ichizu_ ... it's a vocal version that was first done as instrumental on Anemetic) , you ought have a strong enough base to then take a gander at the new vocal stuff (the 3 latest uploads on their channel are the 3 singles/OMVs released). sorry, didn't mean to get that long-winded. 🤷‍♂
