Supposedly, the US dub (and the older US translations of the comics) rename most of the characters for copyright reasons. Asterix and Obelix stay as is because they’re the same as the French original (minus e-acute accent). It seems like names like Getafix, Vitalstatistix etc are copyrighted property of the UK translators or the UK publisher. Perhaps the UK film distributors (Palace in this case) negotiated something with them, since the series was already established there. But for an American audience coming to it fresh, they probably felt it wasn’t worth the expense for what was a gamble on an unknown property. Just some speculation on my part - I can’t think of any other reason for they’d rename nearly all of the characters... unless it was just pure American insularity and they just ignored whatever the UK had already done for decades. Also, for a US audience, the first thing “Rockette” brings to mind is the Radio City Rockettes, who are basically dancers in a Christmas show that date back to 1925. So it could be a really clumsy pop culture reference. It doesn’t make any sense, but that doesn’t seem to have stopped them before.

Were there a few different people deciding on the character names, who didn't speak to each other? We have entirely new names for the regular supporting characters (Vitamix, Bombastix, Franksinatrix...), we have a few uses of the original English language names (Geriatrix, Prolix), at least one original *French* language name despite having no meaning in English (Bonemine). The Optio being addressed as "Optione" suggests that they thought "Optio" was not a genuine Ancient Roman military rank but a punny character name based on "Option"? And then there's the hapless legionary being named "Noodles", which doesn't fit with any naming convention, and might be the name that finally broke me.

I was rather surprised when I first saw English version of the movies. The names keep changing and are rather uninspired puns. For example, the German names were much less denigrating to the characters: Druid == "Miraculix" (after "Miracle"); Chief == "Majestix" (after "Majesty"); the Bard == "Troubadix" (after "Troubadour"); the dog was simply "Idefix" sticking with the French that was a readers' suggestion and choice made up from the words "idea" and "quick", since he's a rather bright and resourceful dog. Similarly the two Roman leaders in the first movie where "Gaius Bonus" and "Julius Pompilius" (because he's all pompous, and not a "Sourpuss" at all, as he was named in the English version). The German names all stayed consistent throughout. I doubt that it is solely because of the huge success of the Comics in Germany. I also had immense trouble to finding the English version of "Operation Menhir" (German: "Operation Hinkelstein" - German word for menhir), because it is simply called "The Big Fight", a very uninspired title devoid of any context of the movie. It is as if the English (or American) dubbers think their audience too dumb to understand or learn words. Or even just interpret what's happening on the screen, as was extremely obvious in "Asterix in Britain", where there were several lines added to comment the goings on on the screen that were simply not there. I do not believe that our children are any smarter to simply understand moving pictures without explanation, I rather think that the English (or American) "adults" think their own children are... very very idiotic. If you treat them like idiots, they will grow up as idiots.

In czech version, names were mostly kept with French Versions, however the dubs varried. Originaly, some characters, like Chief was called his french name, but they with comics changed it to Majestatix, from Majestát (majesty), but some characters got their og names, like Getafix is called Panoramix. This is for some reason changed once in the Asterix conquers america movie, where czechs used british names

7:15 Yeah... horrid addition. It is a children's movie, but a relatively dark one, and the silence and glumness is all part of the athmosphere. It works so well because there is NO narrator in the non-american versions. Even as a child, I didn't find it dull at all. Otherwise you'd have to find "In a Land before our Time" dull as well. There've been tons of cartoon-movies with quiet scenes, yet over the decades the Americans especially seem to have forgotten that kids are not braindead, and think they know oh so much better. An oedipal society indeed.

The Latin Spanish dub of this movie is interesting because despite being a dub of the American version, the cast not only is the same as the previous Asterix movies that most people in South America are familiar with (including the narrator!) but they still kept the original French names... that said, this does have the side effect of Panoramix actually being called a druid... but he still makes a "Vitaminic Potion."
