ASTEROID CITY: Is Wes Anderson Overrated?

With the release of his new film "Asteroid City", Wes Anderson further solidifies himself as a worthy artistic voice. But every new Anderson film seems to bring some discourse: is he overrated? In this video, I give my thoughts on his new film and I attempt to answer that question.

I can't force myself to endure another Wes Anderson film. It's catnip for hipsters and film snobs. It's a comedy without any laughs (pretentious mirth might produce an appreciative chuckle from the snobs).

I'm curious, which of his movies do you think lack substance? Also (this sounds like I'm an angry fan, I'm not I'm curious about this independent of WA), do you think a film HAS TO have substance to be good?

Perfect understanding. Exactly how I felt abt the movie. It very much feels like Wes Anderson almost putting out his view. What happens when it’s over? What happens next for him as an artist. How can he create something better- that people will like more, than what movies he’s already done. He asks why do we do/make the things we do? The film answers that question by saying there is no one reason. There are many. Trying to analyze something and find the one definition of its purpose is impossible. Ironically, analyzing the movie in this way, looking for the one meaning, goes against the message. Everything is subjective. There is no one reason something happens. There are many. Yet we as a society want to always simplify it down when doing so is, yes, impossible. While art is subjective, it doesn’t feel that way. Asteroid City is about Wes Anderson’s search to find how to be better and find the meaning in art when it doesn’t make any sense. Like I said, there is no correct way to understand it. It seems like a very complicated movie that I can’t begin to fully understand on my first watch, but idk, this is how i mostly understood it and I think it aligns a bit with your understanding

@@TruestPicture yep I agree. It makes me a little sad to see people completely dismiss the movie, because it is a great movie, just one that requires a lot of thinking. Like when I saw the guardian giving it two stars I was like okay it’s there opinion but their review completely misses the point of the movie and takes it at the very surface of it, which yeah is a way but like, a website as big as the guardian should be able to actually understand a movie 🤷‍♂️

Correct me if I’m wrong but from my experience at least no one has ever talked about it on my Side of the universe I only heard about it in passing and that I’m aware of it wasn’t even my theaters not only that but it seems a lot of people don’t know what to make of this movie. I didn’t even know that it had made it to physical until yesterday I watched it a few hours after I’d gotten home and Im also very mixed on it but mostly positive it has a very stop motion look and feel. Was it just me?

I am a super fan - but the French Dispatch and Asteroid City failed to please - mildly amusing but generally annoying, veering towards the boring. Beautiful to look at, mind. But that’s not enough.

@58. I appreciate that everyone likes different things but I must ask you, as a super-fan. (And I’m not being demeaning or sarcastic. Sincere question) What exactly do you enjoy about Anderson’s films? Do you find them funny? I’ve watched Mr Fox and some of Grand Budapest and I find it unbearable. I honestly have a hard time seeing all these big name stars reading a script and being enamored with it. I welcome your input. I’m willing to give the guy another chance. Thanks!

I think I like the child-like innocence and sweetness and goofiness and general craziness of the characters in their colour-co-ordinated (frequently candy-hued) meticulously measured settings? NB I didn’t like WA to start with - but the Royal Tenenbaums has since become one of my favourite films, infinitely re-watchable…I don’t like animated Mr Fox but love the Isle of Dogs. The last two films are a disappointment though. I suppose WA divides audiences.

I suppose the same old tricks get old....but let's be honest, if you never saw any other W.A. film before, and this was your first one. You would likely have the same reaction you did to the actual first W.A. film you saw.

Last night I was at what could be considered an artsy and fairly large movie theatre that was well over half full for a showing of Asteroid City. The crowd seemed bored and irritated with the movie. There were no smiles or positive remarks as folks left after the movie was finished, just somber looks of relief that the movie was finally over. Does every WA movie have to involve numerous “town meetings” with long, rambling and quirky speeches being given that are unrealistic that no one would ever make in real life? One example of many recurring events and themes that are reused in WA movies to the point of almost being gimmicky that I have grown tired of. I liked Grand Budapest Hotel but that’s it. I also liked Pulp Fiction but not any other of Tarantino’s movies. I wanted to like Asteroid City and so did the rest of the audience. Didn’t happen.

My opinion on Wes Anderson Changed when I was working with kids. They loved Fantastic Mr Fox, the book that is. The film, they found it to be to most boring shit ever. And you know what, yea, all of his films are boring. People like to pretend that they're not but they are.

I thought it was one of the most boring and bland film he's ever made. The celebrities that agreed to be in this film must all be narcissists and not artists as they must have chosen to be in this film because Wes Anderson... no other reason, maybe because of the "alien". Not a good script. Not a provocative story. About 5 or 6 funny scenes in the runtime. I feel bad for the crew but hopefully they were paid fairly for putting up with the narcissism.
