Very informative and helpful. My wife and i have a daughter and son, and my daughter was just diagnosed with this. We would notice when both of our kids would get sick (a cold, the flu, virus etc), our daughter always seemed to be more sensitive and would have a severe cough where our son would not. We just started new meds this week to try and help. Steroid inhaler, nebulizer treatments, and an antibiotic to fight off any bacteria that may be accumulating in the mucas/phlem buildup. Hopefully all that will help.

I recently learned that this can be brought on by reflux. I never paid much attention to how so many of our innards are connected until the pain I went through to find out what was wrong with me. It turns out that sugar reduces the potency of stomach acid which creates a prime environment for overgrowth in the stomach and small intestine. As the gas accumulates, it will crown at the lower esophageal sphincter and blow out into your esophagus. Since we breathe through the same place, we inhale that gas (bacteria waste gas, digestive pepsin gas) and it triggers the inflammatory response Dr. Amy discussed. I eliminated over 90% of the foods I ate by carbohydrate load and level of processing. It took 6 months to get my gut biome back to some order. I couldn't even lay down to sleep without coughing. Worst time ever. Initially, I was treated for asthma, but we missed the reflux. Now, I have to be careful with processed foods because of acid preservatives. I can drink tea, but I have to make it myself since bottled tea is preserved with acids that react with latent pepsin gas. Kids don't identify symptoms easily beyond, "it hurts", etc. We restrict carbs and bread and that seems to help too. We're all doing well no and I don't see asthmatic symptoms in the little one very often at all now.
