Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

4 жыл бұрын

In a special 'on-the-road' episode of Tyrrell's Classic Workshop, Iain is invited to do some work at an important stop for car enthusiasts around the globe, the Franschhoek Motor Museum, near Cape Town, South Africa. For his visit, they specially remove from exhibition one of the most iconic (not to say valuable) British post-war sports cars, the 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT, this particular example one of only 49 RHD coupes.
With thanks to Wayne Harley and all the team at FMM for making Iain so welcome.
Thank you once again to everyone for the overwhelming reception of these videos and for all the support of likes, subscribes and wonderful comments.
This video was created with the support of A House of Cars: ahouseofcars.com/
A big thank you as well to Jonathan Whipp of Whipp3dCream for the sterling work editing this episode.

You remind me of my father Iain. I remember buying an MG Midget, my first car at 19 years old. I couldn't get it to run properly. It drank petrol like a fish drinks water and at £1.02 a gallon I was always broke. My father tuned the twin SU's exactly the same way and it ran beautifully from then on. I remember looking at him like he was a genius. Good times, thanks for the memories Iain.

My Mothers Brother was a Mechanic of the Old School and he could tune a car by Ear like this and when he was done you could put a full glass of water on the top of the engine and not spill a drop !....I loved having him in the car when I drove him a few times because he could hear every little noise and he would say to me You need to replace the top rubber bushing on your left rear shock absorber or your front right wheel bearing is on it's way out so fix it soon before it becomes a problem ! He raced motor bikes at the speedway when he was young and I remember him driving my Father and me on dirt roads at 80 MPH steering with one hand and rolling a Ciggarett with the other going around corners sideways without slowing down ! he was the car wisperer to me , He was my Hero !

I’ve been to that museum. The estate actually has a race track built on the property! Don’t know why they didn’t take it there and give it a run instead of only driving it on the access roads. Especially since they complained the cars don’t get much of a work out. It is a great place to visit though and is located in a very picturesque part of South Africa.

There is still something not quite right with it though , spitting back out of one of the carbs indicates lean mixture . Really needs a clean set of plugs, a long open throttle run and a plug inspection. Also the ignition timing should have been verified before setting idle speed .

The carburettor tuning & balance is very similar to the procedure I use to set up the triple Mikuni carbs on my Suzuki GT750 two stroke triple motor. What looks both more complicated yet much easier on the DB4 GT carbs than on my Mikunis is that there are several adjustment screws on each carburettor. Each “circuit” is capable of being adjusted, the ease of doing so varying tremendously. Typically, you can readily adjust idle mixture, by varying the the amount of air (screw on the air filter end of the carb) or fuel (screw on the engine end of the carb) into that circuit. The transition into the jet needle, needle jet and main jet each require different adjustments. On my Mikunis, these cannot be done while the motor is running, though the throttle controlled “butterfly” valves that affect balance, certainly can be. The other adjustments are made by altering clip positions of the needle, or it’s taper and diameter or jet size. How Ian does all this just by listening to the hiss down a piece of hose in lieu of properly calibrated vacuum gauges is beyond me. The additional instruments he’s using are his ears and his whole body, sensitive to the sweetness of the note of the engine and it’s smoothness.

Fransch Hoek = Dutch for French Corner. Settled by Protestant French Huguenot refugees after King Louis XIV cancelled the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which had awarded limited tolerance to Protestants and who resumed Protestant persecution by confiscation of their wine estates. They fled to the Dutch refreshment settlement at the Cape of Good Hope, which has a Mediterranean climate and terroir much like the south of France, and established the wine industry of South Africa there back in the 1690s.

If your engine is tired or has issues you'll never get it running silky smooth. Always a pleasure watching you setup these old webbers. At the moment my car is fitted with SU's. Aren’t they awful? The thing that is so so annoying is, that they do the same sequence of pops over and over again. Plain dumb.
