I have always wondered why the journalists loved the styling of the AM DB11. I thought it went the wrong direction stylistically. Everyone I read said that it was this exceptionally beautiful car and I just didn't agree whatsoever. I see them all over OC and they're not good looking. It's refreshing to hear Jason say/think the same.

I really enjoyed this episode. I owned a 1977 Aston V8 for a glorious summer in the UK in the 1980's. It was a pre "Oscar India" specification (i.e. before all the wood and other "Rolls Royce" type wood refinements that were to follow). Back then I couldn't afford the Oscar India spec cars, but now in retrospect, I really now appreciate the simple beauty of the black Smith gauges set into the black leather dash of my car. That car had the simple 3 speed auto, that suited the car's GT personality and daily drive-ability (Prior to getting my car, I had also tested a DBS V8 Manual and found the clutch much too demanding and unrefined to be viable as a car that would be pleasant to drive around London, where I was staying that summer). My 1977 Aston had an enormous, open mouthed, functional hood scoop that fed air into the engine. It also had an elegant sloping tail (not the tail of the later Oscar India cars that had a subtle rear spoiler built into the design). It was an amazing car that took me all around London and on many adventures around the British Capital. Sadly, I was unable to keep it for long and I sold it on, but retain many fond memories of a really splendid car. By the way, there is an important period prior to the sale onto Ford that was during the stewardship of Victor Gauntlett. He really kept Aston Martin Lagonda alive and relatively stable until the Ford era and deserves to be recognized as another charismatic personality in the marque's history. I echo your discussion that the recent AMG engined Vantages can never be better than their equivalent Mercedes AMG variants (e.g. the brilliant AMG GTR in particular), as the Astons will always be burdened with previous generation Mercedes satnav electronics and other engine management "bits". Time will tell what AMG's Tobias appointment to head Aston really means. If it signifies an increased interest by Mercedes in Aston Martin, a tremendous amount of work and capital would be needed to remedy the issues with the current crop of Astons. To a relatively conservative German corporation like Mercedes, this 'testing of the waters' combination of its %5 ownership stake and Tobias' appointment may be a short term effort to evaluate if the brand could/would work under full Mercedes control. Remember, it took Mercedes almost a decade of slow buy-in of AMG itself, until it was fully integrated into Mercedes. For both Aston and Mercedes, this may not be workable as was the case with Bentley with VWAG and Rolls with BMW. I would be fascinated as to what Andy Palmer has to say...

Thanks for another great video. I'm glad you guys got into Aston, a brand that I love because of the history and the VH cars. I agree with all the aspects that Jason points to about the Vantage. The sounds, the feel of the controls and overall driving experience, the beauty. There's also the smell of the leather and the finish of everything. Compare the paint finish on an Aston to any competitor. It's all so unique to the brand. It feels like a car that humans put together for the sole purpose of enjoyment. If some utility is to be had, so be it. A note on the upgraded clutch, it does use parts from a twin plate V12 but it's not exactly the same kit. It is a HUGE benefit though, mostly in the way the lighter flywheel lets the engine rev more freely.

@apostolis2939
@apostolis2939 4 жыл бұрын
I think the constant economical peril that aston martin was always facing gave them their unique personality, the constant part sharing between engines and platforms for decades that created the best aston martins. Because all great astons are derivatives and evolutions of other cars. For example when they were designing the lagonda in the 70's they found out that the pointy low shape and the tall v8 didn't go very well together and the intake was very restrictive, as a result power was low and to mitigate that they fitted much more aggressive cams pistons etc Then they thought it would be a nice idea to fit those new parts in a regular v8 coupe and voila the v8 vantage was made A few years latter a customer from Johannesburg (high altitude) complained that he was losing to a 930 and so for a fee they changed the carb and the pistons and boom, the x pack was created. Aston martin is a company that is accustomed to situations like this so i think they will be ok, i just hope they don't end up like that other niche car company that made very good looking and sounding gt cars and now makes diesel sedans with big panel gaps, maserati Also Derek that greek name was Livanos no need for extra letters PS. The v12 s review is probably my favourite video in the entirety of the internet, the sound, the visuals, the point, the bad german everything was fantastic and of course the car which is in my all time top 5 cars

30mins in and I'm struggling to understand how any car set up dynamically by the chassis guru Matt Becker, who gained his reputation of being one of the best in biz from his days at Lotus, can be such a disappointment, as Jason says. Edit 1: The 3rd gen Bentley Continental GT (ongoing model) was launched in 2018, V8 came in 2019. When you were at MT and drove that CGT V8 it was the 2nd gen V8 model, which was on sale till 2018. I know it can be confusing as they look largely the same, but the 3rd gen has the engine pushed back a few inches.

Matt Becker has done some magnificent chassis tuning and I have zero doubts in my mind he would have/will get the new cars right. But I bet if you looked at a Michelangelo sculpture when he was only halfway through chiseling it out of a rock, it wouldn't be the work of art you expected. That's what happened here. And yes, I just didn't have the MYs in front of me... but the switch from Audi's MLB to Porsche's MSB is a night-and-day one. That's the change I'm talking about.

I didn't think the DB11 looked bad. I think the Vantage looks striking... no elegance at all. I think they were trying to appeal to the younger buyer. I think they should have made the design more reserved, elegant, but release some black badge version for the younger generation (cough Rolls Royce method). They probably over spent on the sudden development of hypercar projects: the Valkyrie and son of Valkyrie... I laughed at Ferrari for their Laferrari where they had to ban journalists from weighing, dynoing, or hotlapping the car, because the car was super overweight over the original supposed specs, and it wasn't as fast as it should in a straight line and on track. Aston Martin were going to make a 1100kg, 1100hp NA V12 car that corners at 3+g's, while Ferrari could only make a 1600kg, 950hp car? Now Ferrari is rolling in dough, while AM is being slapped. and raped in the principle's office, and a German guy has to step in to fix the company.

You're not exaggerating that that Aston with the Larini exhaust DOES sound great (thank you for inserting that clip)! Maybe worth a podcast? Comparing famous after-market exhausts? I always thought Tubis make all Ferraris sound worse than standard, but Larinis always get it right/make it better. Other example: Tyler Hoover's 355 (before it burnt down) also had a Larini I believe. Enhanced an already great sounding car to an epic level. Then the sudden new boy on the block: Akrapovic: moped muffler maufacturer from Poland or AMG P & C (Pops and Crackles) delivery system? And on the topic of P & Cs; aren't they all just useless explosions of excess fuel in the exhaust causing needlessly high fuel consumption instead of sonorously tuning an exhaust system to release CO2 fumes? Anyways, love the podcasts!

I might be a bit late to the party on this episode, but rest assured DTS, you're not the only one who cares or paid attention to Aston in the 90s. Jason, may say no car magazines paid them any attention, but that's a US centric view. I have magazines pitching them against all the relevant rivals in the day, everything from a Mercedes 500SC to a Countach, Testarossa and 930. Then, when the DB7 came out, the original reviews where 'ok', until the V12 Vantage version appeared and then they turned to "this was the car they should have launched with". That said, I share a "car age" similar to yourself and have been very lucky to drive a massive variety of some of the world's most desirable cars from the 30's to 90s.

I'm not an expert on cars but Jason's right: That Lamborghini Urus doesn't look like fun, even being that capable. And to sumarize it: 43:45 Aston Martin is my favorite car company. Being in love with the first V12 Vantage at 2010 and saw it replaced with a far better V12 Vantage S has me wondering: Would this newer Vantage get a S variant with better everything (except looks. I don't think Aston can surpass the beauty on Fishker design. We'll see) under new leadership? Or this will become another robotic German engineering marvel (one that can be great, but can't be fun at all)?

360s are such underrated sports cars, a hard top in a tasteful spec with manual gearbox should be respected as a great choice instead of a poor mans 458. If you consider all the obvious variables they are a fast reliable great handling fun sports car which looks and sounds incredible. I love these classic Astons but could never justify buying one.

Regarding the NC you talked about, it brings to mind how gearing is done in manuals. What's your thoughts on how almost every manual car 2nd gear tops at 60?
@JasonCammisa
@JasonCammisa 4 жыл бұрын
I get why it's done - to pull that extra shift out of the 0-60 time. I love how many car companies (Alfa, even BMW) are throwing STUPID short ratios in their automatics (some topping out 3rd before 60!) because they shift so fast. But nobody's doing with the manuals (except Miata) because they don't realize we DGAF about 0-60 times!

Thanks for the episode, some good knowledge as always! Probably the biggest difference of car's sound between a recording and a real life sound is Aston's V12. Couldn't believe how good and rich the sound is in person. By the way, anyone interested should try listening to Andrew Frankel's and Dan Prosser's DriveNation podcast on Aston Martin. There are some good insights and history of the brand although a lot of the information was said here as well.

Great episode, but that's nothing new (thank you guys!). I missed one of my favourite cars ever in the conversation though: the 70's Lagonda with its astonishing proportions and crazy electronics that probably could give enough talk for a whole episode. I also love the 80's V8 and its mix of brute and gentleman, especially the late Vantage cars with the lower front and the blind, body-colored grille

I like Jason, and his reviews, in general, but pretty sad when they only know the most superficial differences between a GT3T and 911R. Good thing I don’t really listen to these guys for car advice but rather comedic relief. Then again, I loved the looks of the new Vantage so much, I bought one. No accounting for tastes. Finally, I think Andy Palmer came out with a great portfolio of cars. He just didn’t pay attention to balancing the books. Got fired for not making money.

My comparisson is a 5 series of a working collegue. He was shocked to hear that both cars have the same gearbox. It feels awfully different. Same can go for it's maintennance. VW for example has been using not enough gearbox fluid in their DSG gearboxes for some time, who knows what any company (in this case Jaguar) can do wrong about the ZF8... And maybe it's just sold for a good price to manufacturers...
