What I love about villa is there offside trap since emery came in I have never seen a team execute the offside trap so many times and perfectly executed if emery gets the players doing the same this season teams will struggle to get shots off let alone score against the villa

When Gerrard was appointed it was because of smith struggling to find his feet after grealish was sold and early and long injuries to key and new players. Gerrard didn’t really improve the squad, kamara being the best buy . When unai turned up he showed what a great team Smith had built as Gerrards buys were not used or were injured. Now with some solid buys this season and the blossoming of the youth players which Smith started we have an incredible team and potential. Unai is without doubt a fantastic manager and coach absolutely love him but so happy that what Smith did for Villa is plain to see. The team he built has come of age allowing the addition of quality to ever improving quality of Watkins, Konsa, luis , Mings, etc . For once we have a platform for our youth academy to seamlessly come into rather than be seen as saviours of the 1st team. Smith wasn’t Unai and not many are that standard but I’ll never forget his part in this.

@@OffThePostYT If you look at Smiths time at Brentford you see he left them with a very healthy young squad that the assistant coach he employed eventually took up. I think there are certain likenesses to what he did for Villa, considering he had to buy 12 players on promotion it’s turned out well. At Brentford he regularly sold his best players while a new stadium was built something his successor didn’t have to do so much, at Villa it was very much about youth, finances and a blank canvas.

Exactly. Deano laid down all the foundations for this. Emery is so good he'd make El Ghazi and Trezeguet into world class players. Crazy to think how far we've come since promotion

By the way I just have to correct you, Gerrard was sacked after the 3-0 loss to Fulham seen at 2:23. The subsequent 2 games against Brentford and Fulham were with interim manager Aaron Danks. Emery was appointed after the 4-0 loss to Newcastle though.

I was largely with you until the predicted lineup. The 442 has been Emery's bread and butter and we've used it for all of preseason. Watkins and Diaby up front, McGinn in the squad, and probably Ramsey when he returns. Bailey has been very inconsistent. If he were good enough to start we wouldn't have gotten Diaby
