His fights with cancer ended around the same time as Gerard being sacked. I know my dad is looking down with the biggest smile with how our boys are doing right now he watched them lift the European cup in Rotterdam hopefully I can watch us win the champions league one day. I’ve really struggled to watch football since he passed but hopefully with us doing so well it will get me back into it. I’ve been watching KZbin since I was 10 I’m now 20 and this is probably the first comment on any post apart from the odd emoji. I'm not yet 60 but when I was in my teens Villa were the most decorated club in English football, add to that the fact that London apart no other UK city is close to the size of Birmingham. I watched that 2019 play off final in a local bar, it was packed with Villa fans, on the walk home I saw other Villa fans who'd clearly watched the game elsewhere, I didn't see any Derby fans. I mention this because I live 150 miles from Villa Park, if anybody ever gets this club competing for and winning trophies regularly we'll have no limits.

Villa reminds me of Spurs in a way. Two clubs that struggled as lower mid table teams for years. Both got better under new owners and even made it to an EFL cup final. Eventually they would finish higher and higher until they qualified for the UCL. Over those years many gems would leave like Grealish at Villa and Bale at Spurs. Could Villa like Spurs consistently qualify for the UCL?
@redx11x7 ай бұрын
We cannot be compared to Spurs. Over the last ten years Spurs have been in the Champions league 4-5 times. That's shows a quality squad. Villa will never be able to compete financially with Spurs due to Spurs fan base and billion dollar stadium etc etc. What we do have is the best tactical manager in the league, if it wasn't for ffp and him receiving the backing to sign who he wants, then we can compete in the top 6.

Recruiting Gerrard because of his success in Scotland was a terrible choice, anybody can win the SPL with Celtic or Rangers because it's literally a 2 team league and it doesn't make you a good manager. Villa have flirted with the top places several times in recent decades but somehow failed to cross the line. Other clubs have done the same and Leicester even won the PL. So the question is whether it was just Villa's turn, or will they do what so many middling clubs have done, after defying the odds. I suspect that the whole structure of the PL, the demands of European qualification, and the FFP regulations, are designed to protect the big brands who attract the global audiences. If Villa can do it twice, then that will be the time to start believing that the PL is not a handicap race, for the benefit of the biggest brands.

To be fair to Garde, Villa were going down that season whether he was in charge or Pep. It had been coming for about 4 seasons, we were escaping relegation by the odd point consistently. The squad was terrible, the club was close to falling apart. The best thing to happen to the club at that point in time was to get relegated, ship out loads of deadwood and rebuild.
