I became a confirmed football fan for life that night and a particular lover of night matches. What an atmosphere with 62,500 the official attendance. I was 12 years old watching the game from just behind the TV cameras at VP. When Pat McMahon scored the winner, the noise was incredible and I saw grown men crying at the final whistle. Twelve years later I was crying myself when Villa lifted the European Cup. It was this game though that cemented my love of the beautiful game.

I was 14 years old when at this game and had somehow lost Dad whilst on The Holte. The crush was amazing, almost one could take your feet off the ground and not fall down. I was about two thirds of the way up the stand to the right of the goal and I can still see Andy rising in my mind's eye. A bloke standing next to me put me on his shoulders as we celebrated. Now approaching 68 and loving every match. Up the Mighty Villa!

Villa were unlucky in the final, I was there and the Villa fans were great. Villa outplayed us and outsang us but we had Chiv who was on top of his game.

Went to the first leg at Old Trafford but not the second. Villa played really well in both games and were deserved winners in a tie United were expected to win comfortably. If memory serves, Boro knocked us out of the FA Cup in a replay up at their place not long after. Three days after the Villa defeat, we went to Derby and drew 4-4 on a frozen pitch which turned out to be Wilf McGuinness's last game in charge. Sir Matt took over and we finished 8th. Probably higher than we'll finish this season.

@Paul Morris 3rd division,2nd division to 1st division eventually, didnt make a difference to the size of crowds at villa park, and to the true fans of the club nobody really cared what division it was, proper fan base proper club

An interesting fact is that, although Villa were in the Third Division (their lowest point ever as a club), they were the most successful club in England, with more trophies in the cabinet than every team in the country - including the team they were facing. Funny old game, football!

Strange to see the League Cup semi final being played in December of 1970. Nowadays the semi final is normally in January. 😂 Weird eh. 😆 Unfortunately for Villa that season they went on to lose 2-0 to Spurs in that 1971 League Cup Final at the old Wembley.(Martin Chivers with both goals)

I thought Ken was a Bolton Wanderers supporter. 😂 By the way speaking 🗣️of Ken Wolstenholme this was his last season as main commentator for the BBC(1970-1971) before he moved to ITV in late 1971 onwards.

What a great night/win for Villa, then of the (old) Third Division, v the likes of Best, Charlton, Law et al. Proof that the underdogs can still rise to the occasion & pull of a shock result, though I think Villa were worthy winners on this occasion

How did Villa not get promotion from the 3rd Division playing like that? It's hard to believe they were even in that Division.

Fond memories of Pat, I think he was signed from Celtic by Tommy Docherty. That was in July, 1969,...he played 130 games and scored 25 goals for Villa.
