I'm looking at this list, and other than Tank Commanders, it seems actually pretty fluffy. Good bulk of infantry, some Storm Troopers, some tanks, artillery support, light vehicle support.

Even with the tank commanders it is fluffy, Pask himself is leading the best of the best on critical spearhead assault. I assume due to this players experience and the how expensive the units are, he would play them cagey, move and strike precisely at the right time, fluffy as it gets! Love it.

It is important to say that, in this tournament, both players were placing the decors. It is not the same result for the astra militarum if you play on a wtc map (lots of forests, vault (+1 save and -1 hit, op for termies), etc .... In the PGT you could do some no man's land where your tanks could wreck the ennemy on the open field.

I remember in the Guard 5th Edition Codex, Penal Legion were 30 points more than the normal infantry squad with none of the upgrade options. However, they got a random ability, and the CC ability was widely seen as the worst one. Didn't matter to me, loved running them in non-competitive games and loved it when they got the CC ability.

@@mongoliandude They got an extra close combat weapon, which in 5th Edition mean they got an extra attack, alongside the rending ability in close combat. That ability in 5th made it so wound rolls of 6 ignored armor saves, which has since become extra ap on weapons that used to have this ability, Genestealer claws, Slaanesh Daemonettes, others I can't recall atm. And yeah, even when I quit the game for an extended period of time, I still kept up to date with new models and lore. Got back into it recently. It's a great game with good lore. What's preventing you from actually playing? The cost? The time? All understandable. If you do want to start playing some day, I hope you're able to.

I salute Sven for this achievment but i agree that on a WTC table it may have ended another way. The Drill seems a little underused since you could get more Cmd Squad Meltas in there but either Way - well done. Will try similar Lists but with Medusas and some Mortars. Dont understand Creed as well...whats the point taking him, if he is not your warlord for the additional 2 CP?

@@scottcairns2933 with all the voxcasters for free your orders should have 18" range anyway. Creed costs almost the same as a Company and a Platoon Commander... so there would be 3 orders as well. At the moment I see Creeds valie in +2 command points, not in his 3 orders. But I certainly did not place 3rd in a 150 player event and therefore I may not be the best Guard player ;)

Vindicates my post from yesterday. Guards winrate is deflated by being used by a lot of tournament beginners that take them for a walk every buff. Guard is an army that can get taken off guard with movement Tricks and binding in melee more than most armies. If you can circumvent that, like more experienced players are able too, than u can do real work with them. Still not a very good army, but its not all doom and gloom. Congrats to the player, hope we see more guard succeding 😁!

Binding them in melee is a 2-way street though depending on the opponent. Defending the tanks by blocking up high ap low volume fire with cheap bodies. Like this even works in kill team I put the melee veteran in a 2v1 situation and after he died I launched a mortar barrage and got 2 kills

@@iamnotglenn there are very little armies that can outshoot 3 Tank Commanders plus Pask and support. The problem pretty much stays to not get them licked in combat. Guard has the means to do that pretty reliably though. I suppose that most games they do lose are not games where they lose the actual fight, but on points! So the challenge becomes scoring and play the trading game, while whittling down your opponent at the same time. This seems feasible at the moment against a lot of opponents. I was waiting for someonr competent to finally do it, and voilà!

Gatekeeper TC can deploy way in the back. Deploy one demolisher TC aggressively and the other demolisher defensively. If you win first turn, Gifted Commander redeploy your defensive demolisher forward. If you go second, move your aggressive TC backward.

The foundation is super similar to my guard lists, but I typically take 20 conscripts, and manticores instead. Should of taken creed as the warlord and take two tank aces, either the basalisks or tank commanders. Relic should be Tax pax Cadia for the -1cp to the new strats each turn

If you ran the math before amor of contempt manticores came out better. But with armor of contempt now, additionally if something is in cover, the 1 AP more can make up to the less amount of shots (damage per point!). It is important to comapre both plain tough, full payload is obviously better on the more expensive model with more shots.

This is a controversial opinion to have, but I am 100% sure that guard are actually much stronger that they are portrayed. Here is why: *(Story of how I came to this opinion): 3 guys I know from school and myself play 40k whenever possible in the weekends. The armies fielded in these games are Castodians, Marines, Nechrons and Guard. More times than not, the Guard friend beats their opponent bloody except if it is against the Castodians. The way he does this is by making a castle that cannot be broken. (See second '*' for his list). The way that he usually wins is by playing his Infantry and Bulgrans aggressively to screen in the middle of the board, artying the enemy's heavy hitters and by having his tanks and sentinels blocking all avenues to get to him with blistering firepower. He often takes out all AT and tanks on the enemy side with a Infantry charge to tie them up or mass execution via Lascanons and Hunter-killers, then picks off the Infantry with his double shoot on tanks after half move ability. Now I know people would argue that this casual scene doesn't represent the same factors found in the competitive scene, but look at it from this perspective real quick: Guard have amazing tanks that have the ability to shoot all weapons twice into the same target if they sacrifice speed, they are all extremely tough for their average cost and they can be fielded en mass, they have the best artillery in the entire game (referring to the LOS ignoring weapons and rules) and their infantry are amazingly cheap and dangerous with their ability to screen and pick away at the enemy with the special weapons. *(Guard friend's list) Spearhead Detachment- Astra Militarum -2000pts-6CP **HQ** 2x Tank Commanders (Heavy Stuber pintal, Lascanon hull, twin Heavy bolters and everything in the vehicle equipment list). The warlord has the relic kurov's aqila **Troops** 2x 10 man Infantry squads (vox and a special weapon) **Elites** 2x 3 man Bulgran squads **Fast attack** 2x 3 unit squadron Armoured sentinels (all equipment and Lascanons on all) **Heavy Support** 2x Heavy weapons squads (usually played as mortars) 1x Leman Russ squadron (Battlecannon, Heavy Stuber, Lascanons in 2 but 1 with a Heavy bolter, Twin Heavy bolter sponsins and all equipment in list) 1x Manticore (Full payload, Heavy Stuber, Heavy bolter and all equipment)

Especially if people tri-point your Expensive tank commanders, so they can´t get out of meele = it doesn´t really matter then anymore how long it takes to kill it... Sure you have nice Units for screening, it is key to sucess, but often a good player still gets you by shooting them of at the right point, flyers, deepstrikes etc..

@@mintw4241 The entire Custodes fiasco shows that. Watching multiple batreps and games as well as playing games, IMO over 50% of their wins for the first few months were the opponents reacting as trained by 9th to sally forth and grab midfield objectives. Against a brutal melee army with substandard shooting. Yeah, Custodes have fancy guns that are slightly more powerful, balanced by low model counts, but they are murderous in melee. Right before the nerfs, I was seeing opponents starting to hold back a turn or two, gun down or weaken a few squads, maneuvering to control who gets the charge and balance appearing organically. Were there still problems? Yep, with the major one being Trajann being an auto include mandatory to every list. A clear sign of sloppy design. The major issue was still learning to play against them, mainly by cutting down units because there is no chaff in a Custodes list. A few units go down and you start seeing them abandoning objectives to try to keep the pressure up. Now Custodes are much less durable (on top of the loss from codex creep), lost most of their obsec and are being forced to head to FW P2W again.
