Fears to fathom's scariness doesn't come from the jump scares, directly but i believe it comes from the constantly tightening tension that builds and builds until the last second, achieving this through nostalgic fears which you've learn't to be "childish" suddenly resurface with twice the horror since you dismissed the thought of something so seemingly impossible to happen to you in particular. I got bored so i decided to edit after trying not to hide in the comments from sheer terror. :(

This is how jumpscares SHOULD be used but nowadays people just focus on the jumpscares as if it is scary enough by itself, think FNaF 1 and how creepy it is vs FNaF SB where security bots jumpscare you left and right.
@imthecoolestguyalive

Thank you for the confirmation that it's all gonna build up towards a jumpscare. I feel a little less tense looking at the chapters now, since I know that the real spooks will only come around the end (edit - boy was I wrong, it came at multiple points). Although this is genuinely super unnerving. Five minutes in, and the memories of being home alone as a kid are creeping up. Key word is "creep", because holy crap is this unsettling.

See though... my brain has never had negative possibilities to those situations. Because the frst instinct in my brain since 10 years old when shtf is to attack. Though having a woodstove is a good deterrent for in my own home because I have a 2lb metal poker and an axe if needed. And out of my home it's pure fight adrenaline. I'm not afraid to push eyes in and blind someone immediately in a fight. Two fingers jammed into both eye sockets, then kick their hips or lower abdomen with all the force your torso can muster, then get up and run. They can't see you anymore so you can escape a solo person easily.

Damn, I just realized in the motel episode it is absolutely a bunch of people in on it, the gas station attendant tells people the story so nobody picks up the hitchhikers that get stopped by the logs (presumably so someone else can damage their car while the logs are being pushed out of the way), the guy who drives you must be in on it since he is the one who stops and takes you to the specific motel, the motel clerk knows about it since its presumable you got "messed around with" while drugged and the pill is plan B, which means its been happening. As well as the vending machine, that whole story screams human trafficking organization with a plan that they follow to capture people

@@SimonPetrikov12 my guess is the clerk isnt in on it, but is instead somebody who has become aware that some group has been using his motel for trafficking. Given how far out they are, bringing in law enforcement may not be a reasonable option, and he isn't a vigilante, so the best he can do is recognize that the signs of "things that happen and then people that come here go missing" is happening, and has things prepared to help where he can without endangering himself.
@jonathanisolato
@jonathanisolato 3 ай бұрын
The logs fallen in road like that is a very common thing as a "people trap" in rural areas. It is known if you see a neatly cut down tree in the road, boards with nails sticking up on them, or something else that seems too perfectly set up as a barricade without an explanation, if you get out of your vehicle, you will die or go missing, most often its used by cartels and human traffickers, and getting out of the vehicle to clear the road or see the damage to your car makes you a target to be kidnapped, shot, or have your vehicle stolen or tampered with in this case. One thing is common that these setups are very commonly done by organized groups, which how coordinated the rest of this scheme is, a large group of people is in on it, based on actions we can speculate the clerk knows but isnt a member of the group
@RenTheFen
@RenTheFen 2 жыл бұрын
this game gets you really good because it has lots of implied movement, where doors will open after doing something for a bit. Very simple, but it REALLY sells the effect that somebody is near you. It also uses a bit of hidden movement where just barely out of the corner of your eye you can see something move. I love it. Maybe it will get old, but I love the effect.

He's a 14 year old kid jumping from the second story of a house while an intruder is sitting in the house waiting unknowing of why he's there after getting a worrying text from mom saying "Do not open the door, stay hidden." People don't think clearly when they're under stress, especially at that age and while you're home alone, and arguably this was the more realistic and the smarter decision since you don't know if the intruder is there to hurt you or just steal from you, so hiding is your best move.

Imo, Fears to Fathom's horror mainly comes from two places: pacing and realism. Every chapter masterfully utilizes slow buildup through drawn-out, mundane scenes, sprinkling just a few worrying moments (like the person walking up the stairs in Chapter 1) to make sure the tension isn't lost and keeps on building until you either die or escape just by the skin of your teeth. Even if the people submitting these stories are lying or embellishing details, each scenario feels like something that could easily happen to you, if you were unlucky. No inhuman monsters, no supernatural elements, just pure, realistic horror.

On the note of 12:30 when asked what chat would do and that pizza has actually saved somebody b4. Ive seen multiple accounts of somebody calling 911 and disguising it to ordering pizza. I find it amazing that "ordering food" is enough to save somebody. But also an testament to human nature that it has ever had to come to that. Im glad this game is not only enjoyable to watch but also sheds some light on the fact these kinds of things can and have actually happened.

The second one oddly reminds me of a time where I was staying at a hotel, and found someone asleep under the bed.. Yea.. Under the bed.. Another time I found a knife under the bed in a bag but that one was not as worrying as finding a whole person.. I do not know why the person was there but I called the police and just waited outside.. Did not wake the person because I was afraid of what they might do if they woke up. Not the worst encounter I have had.. But its for sure a odd one.
