Thanks for this vid. I got tired of a coworker always borrowing my orignial 498K whenever his Snap-on didn't have enough beans, so he went out and bought him a 'Thor' but just like yours his froze up brand new. I got on him for not oiling it but he swore did and I didn't believe him etc, so he's been borrowing mine again while waiting on an reply about warrantying his. It got me thinking, so I checked youtube and found your vid, seemed like it might be the same issue so after work we took his apart, and sure enough, same issue. Easy fix. Thanks again. Now he can go back to wearing out his own tools instead of mine.

Wow.. that was a great catch. That acts like a piston in a sleeve. 😊

Excellent video, really good technical seminar. Can I ask you what kind of camera you use? I'm impressed with your close focus ability.

I have a ir that the barrel would spin just a bit and do that.

You think the same thing can be the case with the original 4980? I have one and it dont seem like it hits like it should. Ive noticed once a hammer bit is installed you have to press the bit against something for it to actually hit. If you dont have it against something the bit doesnt even move once you pull the trigger. All my other air hammers aren’t like this. Thanks

That's how my Matco air hammer is. It's probably normal as the piston is only returned by YOU the operator when you press the bit against something. If the piston isn't returned (i.e. dry firing) the piston can't fire forward again as it's allready chilling at the end of the barrel.

@@TechnicianRed Gotcha👍 wasnt sure as my ingersall isnt like that. It just seems like it hits on par with it and that doesnt seem right.Im gonna take it apart after seeing your video here i assume they are put together the same except bigger parts on the thor.

How did you get that pin out to remove the bore? Did you hammer pin down into the shaft or pull it out somehow?
@TechnicianRed Жыл бұрын
I dont remember it being difficult at all. Probably pulled it out with a pair of pliers. It definitely just pulls straight out though. Just make sure it isn't bound up against the aluminum housing. If it is, you will need to rotate housing on the barrel by sticking barrel in vise and wracking housing handle with mallet

Would you recommend the 498K over the 4980?
@TechnicianRed Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I never use the 4980 anymore.

the piston drummer can be purchased separately?
@TechnicianRed2 жыл бұрын
Maybe. I don't think they sell this model anymore so they might not sell parts for it as it was a limited production tool.

@@TechnicianRed I from Russia found on Aliexpress exactly the same of another brand.it's working fine so far.but I heard that the drummers break .I was thinking of taking it for the future.even the instructions are like yours

This swivel adapter kills the air flow. Get rid of it.
@TechnicianRed3 ай бұрын
Yeah it does restrict some air but still leaves plenty for my needs. The time saved by having that swivel attached is well worth it. I run a swivel on 90% of my air tools- even the blow guns
@mcqcjc84093 ай бұрын
@@TechnicianRed Just put anti whip piece of air line directly to the tool and have adapter on the other end lest say 30 cm
@mcqcjc84093 ай бұрын
@@TechnicianRed It does not restrict some air - it can easily restrict 40% of flow
