You kinda need the mix amp for this headset though because just plugging it into the controller does not give it enough power to output high quality sound in game. Plus you don’t get the Dolby digital surround without the mix amp.

SSG Squidward I don’t own a ps4 but if your ps4 has an optical port in the back of it I would buy this headset with the MixAmp. The MixAmp is super useful whether you are using it for streaming or you can even plug in a secondary audio source through the aux port on the MixAmp so you could be on the phone with someone while still gaming and in a party with your friends. Otherwise I really like the hyper x cloud 2.

Filipe Proenca it’s better to just buy the MixAmp instead of just the headset, this MixAmp can be used on pretty much every headset out there and can give you surround sound. What I’m going to do is buy the MixAmp for my Astro A10’s

The thing is, the lag you get with wireless headsets is almost definitely less than the amount of display lag your TV has anyways so shouldn't it be a mute point? Plus, the human ear can't distinguish 2 separate sounds until they're 30ms or more apart. Anything less just sounds like 1 sound, and even at 50 ms, it just sounds like a flam, it's really not a huge deal in this case I'd say. I still went with the A40's though. Just sayin

Not sure if the difference is big, but lower is always better. If you ever played a competitive instakill MP shooter then u know the difference between playing with 40ms lag and 100ms lag. I remember the days when we wouldn't even start playing if the server had more then 80ms. The problem is that most games these days have a "zeroping" system that makes it seem like there is no lag. Meaning that if you shoot the opponent on your screen, the bullets will effectivily hit the target and those hits will register to the server 100ms later. While in the old days the bullets would just leave your gun 100ms later and you had to compensate that yourself by aiming slightly to where the opponent will be instead of where he is. But the lag is still there, that's how you get the "how can he shoot me when i'm allready behind the wall" feeling. So with any visual or sound, i agree that lag is best to be avoided. But you have a good point that sound is probably much less critical then visual or controller input.

xXFaTaLBMHXx they do make headphones with multiple drivers in each ear to give you "true" surround sound. However, these are generally terrible for many reasons, including the need to reduce the size of each driver, and in the end you just get sub par sound, and the fact that your brain expects to hear some of the sound from the right side bleed over to the left, but this doesn't happen with headphones. Since you only have 2 ears, 2 drivers should be enough, and then getting the sound processed correctly to make it SOUND like its surround sound is the key. If you use any set of headphones to listen to something like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4anhZ-slsydgKM you will get the surround effect. That is because it is properly recorded to have each channel play what your ears expect to hear. The trouble is when we get artificially produced 7.1 surround sources, we need a good way to process that to sound like what your ears expect to hear. Placing 7 speakers around your room works, because the sound really is coming from "over there' so your ears hear it correctly. But with headphones, the isolation prevents this. That's why with headphones people are concerned about sound stage and surround sound processing.

Tyler Knowles yeah I know, I have them... the reason I asked was I was gonna not recommend them... while they are good for call of duty and hearing foot steps (ish), they don't have good audio quality... basically the audio quality sucks but the surround sound, which comes from the mixamp, is great. I suggest people to get the $60 cloud core headset, and pair it with the astro mix amp... until you have used a good quality headsets, the Astros sound amazing... not a bad purchase by any means but the headsets are bad, the mixamp is great, and your paying for the brand... (btw astro fanboy here)

I've had my pair of 2013 A40s and mixamp for roughly 7 years now and overall they've held up extremely nicely. I totally lost my dolby cable within the first year of owning them, and was too young to even care about it, but honestly the quality was always extremely high regardless. There are some areas that are suffering now, like the headset's microphone for example sometimes has some really weird audio issues where it blasts everyone with static, and the mixamp audio wheel has become extremely fickle, where even the slightest adjustment screws up the sound balance between my left and right ear. Otherwise the quality of the headset is incredible, and the hardware held up way better than I expected, definitely worth the 200 or so bucks for high quality rather than the 30-60 dollar headsets that are significantly worse quality that people burn through every 2 years.

Just got these brand new on OfferUp in 2019 and WOW! I thought my HyperX Cloud Flights were pretty good but these are in a different league. I don't see a difference with the newer A40s except for color and the MIXAMP being set up differently. These are comfy, sound amazing, and build is beautiful. Even when unboxing these you know you're getting quality!

Great video! I'd only add a couple of things. I may have missed you saying it, but just in case... 1) You mentioned plugging the amp into your PC, PS4, or XBOX, but which version of the Mixamp you use will determine which console you can use it with (if I understand correctly). The black one works with PS4, etc. and the white one with XBOX One, etc.. 2) One of the biggest problems people have with the A40's is the mic quality. There are a number of mic tests online where people can decide whether it would be a problem for them or not. 3) It's worth noting that the $250 price point is for the headset AND the mixamp (Duh!), but you can get either individually. A lot of people will compare this combination with other individual headsets which don't come with an amp and talk about how much more expensive the Astros are. So, it's worth noting that the headset itself is around $140-$150. Anyways, again, great video. Thanks!

great video, I'm a older A40 headset user(so old my a40 uses two coconuts :P). I use mine with the control amp and have an adapter cable(order separately) that turn the headset RC JACK TYPE HEADSET, SO I USE the sound card inside my motherboard(its personal preference). Keep up the good work and honest review

Nice vidéo and explanation ! I have this beauty for gaming and believe me everyone there is nothing better than that nothing at all when you put this headset on your head you are not playing a game! You are on the game that it’s just freakin amazing 🎮🎧💙 And again very nice video my friend 🤙
