FUN FACT: Nebulax (the goopy green alien) is based on the alien from My Alien Buddy, a subgame in The Playroom for PS4 (2013). My Alien Buddy was developed by Double Fine (Psychonauts, Brutal Legend), which explains why Nebulax looks so different compared to any other character in Astro Bot! FUN FACT 2: Team Asobi, the devs of Astro Bot, is a Japanese developer led by... a French guy?! That's right! Nicolas Doucet moved to Japan to work with Sony in 2011. In April 2021, he was made the lead of Team Asobi following the departure of other senior staff. All the other game that were voted for GOTY has all been done before just with different stories or were a DLC that should have their own category IMO. Plus 40 years of gaming and having parents that owned a video store for 30+ years helps a lot. You get to understand games and how they bring something new to the table as times goes on. To me a fanboy usually is exceedingly apologetic and closed minded about whatever they're "fanboying" about. Your company is perfect, pointing out mistakes = hate/jealousy. Using other products = treason. Your friend seems open minded about though (aside from obvious jokes) which is good because there's more fun to be had that way ^^ I loved Astro bot especially because it borrows many mechanics from any 3D plattformer ever. You've got varying level themes, a map, a small hub world, secret exits and so on, it delivers exactly what I hope for in a 3D plattformer. They're rare, especially 3D Marios and I am perfectly fine with Astro the way it is. It's just adorable ❤

As a speedrunner for this game I think you very much underestimated the amount of movement mechanics and skips that already exist in this game lol. I’d recommend checking out the records for individual levels like “Downsize Surprise”, “Wormy Passage”, “Furnace Fever”, or even a level as simple as “Creamy Canyon”. Some of the things people have already figured out are insane, and Astro’s movement can be really fluid.

I began my life as an avid Nintendo fan, with the SNES back in the early 90s. Since then I've been firmly on the Playstation side of things, from the PS1 all the way to today's PS5. But even though characters like Crash, Spyro and Ratchet have made up the majority of my personal gaming history, I'll always retain a soft spot for Mario and the gang. To me, both sides can live together and have fun together. Because really, what else are games for, if not to give us fun? ^_^

This game is one of the best games sony has put out this year. Hopefully they continue to make more astro bot games. Also, a level that is really good is the mouse level that would have blown his mind for sure

The details in that level are really well made! Loved that level so much!

No that's not Sly Cooper at 7:34. That's Rivet from Rachet and Clank Rift Apart. She's a pretty recent character and in the game she's AWESOME!!!!! And the one that looked just like her that you collected earlier is Ratchet.

Until he realizes the levels are identical to past Nintendo games they did not do anything except copy Nintendo levels and give them a pretty nice paint job. The creativity is all Nintendo so there is your non-bias report from a true gamer:P The game Crash Bandicoot by Naughty Dog was a platformer that rivaled Nintendo and was completely new and was created by not doing what Nintendo does.

The bot early in the video was not Sly Cooper, it's that female character from the new Ratchet and Clank (don't know her name) But Sly Cooper does appear in a later level Also I totally get him saying 'pressing the X button' even though it isn't an X since I play on multiple platforms and whenever I change console I have to look down to the controller to be sure what the button layout is

Ive been gaming for over 40 years and have always been a Nintendo fan first and foremost, and that’ll never change. I own every Nintendo console and every Sony console as well. Let’s face it, there’s things you’re not going to get on Nintendo, and things you’re not gonna get on either Sony or Xbox. Astro Bot is an amazing game, anyone into 3D platformers is going to love this. The game is so polished and so interactive, it’s just a really immersive world. Music is amazing, just like Astro’s Playgroynd. It improves on AP in the best ways it could have. I really love how you have to kick the bots that you save in the ass to get them. It’s everything you’d expect it to be and more. Almost worth buying a PS5 just to play both Astro games.

Astro Bot is some of the most fun I’ve had with PlayStation in a while. It deserves all the praise it is getting. A fantastic game

Agreed. I (Ted) like playstation games, but so many of them are made for adults to enjoy, I can't share a lot of those experiences with my kids until they're at least 12, and some I don't ever want to experience with them because of awkward adult scenes. They can play that when they're older on their own. But this game is so good, I hope Sony makes more stuff that can be fun and appropriate for all ages. I don't think it's too big of an ask.

I've grown up on PS1 and games like Crash and Spyro, then drifted away from platformers. A year ago I rediscovered Jak & Daxter, another ND classic through OpenGOAL PC port, played through 1 and 2 and collected everything I could. And I only recently discovered Super Mario Odyssey and played that game as well. I had an absolute blast, collected all (at least 90% on some) of the stars before I even moved on to the next world. Nothing in any of these games felt like Ubisoft checklist gaming, everything was fluent, fun and natural. exploring the Mario movement was great (though, I'm getting to old for the most intricate ones :D ), and then I played Astro bot, actually worried I might dislike the "simpler" movement set, but in the end it took me 2 days and 23 hours of game time to get the platinum (right after I finished Astro's Playroom and got the platinum there) and I absolutely loved it. The references hit home hard, levels were fun to explore and if Astro bot 2 came out with identical gameplay but 5 new worlds to explore, I'd be first in line. Sadly that's not how I feel about Odyssey.. When I finished that, and got all stars on peach's castle, I lost the drive to go to the dark/darker sides of the moon even though I had unlocked those, and going back to all the worlds to get the remaining stars didn't seem as much fun because of how some stars are basically impossible to find with less than 350 IQ.. It was fun and amazing while it lasted, and it served it's course, but Astro bot I want more of, and I can't wait for next Thursday for the new speedrun level

Gonna' be real, I hope this sticks. Sony's had a lifelong crisis of not knowing who their flagship is. Nintendo? Mario. X Box? Master Chief. Sony? Uhh... Crash Bandicoot? Jak & Daxter? Kratos? I asked a friend the question lately, and he threw out Spiderman as Sony's current posterboy. The one hitch is that this feels so much like a Nintendo game that I'm not sure it represents the rest of their games perfectly.
@The8asement3 ай бұрын
That's a really good point. I think, though, that there is one thing in particular that makes Astro Bot a perfect candidate - he can be loved and adored by all ages, would make a great toy, lots of peripherals, his design is so simple (just the white and blue alone - just like Mario's red and white). If they double down on this, I think they've got it. Plus, if they continue to incorporate all of their other icons into games where Astro Bot is the main character then they've got it down. Now they just need to make a ton of Astro Bot games in different Genres. Astro Bot party, Astro Cart, Astro Sports, Astro Bot 2.5d side scrollers. Astro Bot maker? nahhh... that's still LBP's thing.

@@The8asement Well he certainly made a positive first impression on a lot of people. Here's hoping the best for the little fella. If he's going down the Mario spin-offs route, they could make some questionable edutainment games that they don't want to talk about.

I mean for the longest time, it's been ratchet and clank but I'm not sure the later games did as well as Sony wanted.

@@The8asement Don't forget the Astro Bot RPG. Make it something like Ys VIII with a great mix of platforming, exploration and fast-paced action combat. I think that'd work great if done right!

If they had bothered to advertise JAPAN Studio's (which has since been merged with Team Asobi) work, Gravity Rush's Kat would have been a great mascot, and she's also the de facto mascot for the Vita (which also needed a ton of advertisement). Ditto for Kutaro from Puppeteer. Not to mention Media Molecule's Sackboy from Little Big Planet and Iota/Atoi from Tearaway.

The three special bots you collect in Creamy Canyon are references to the Metal Gear series. The first one in the tree is Solid Snake, the second one captured by UFO is Psycho Mantis, the boss that makes you plug in your controller in port 2, and the third in the special room is Gray Fox. The first two special bots in the starter level are Ratchet and Clank references. The one tied to the tree is Ratchet, and the one in the aquarium is Ratchet's female counterpart Rivet.

I was a Sega Fan back in the 8 and 16 bit days and I also believe I was also on the right side of history. Nowadays I play Nintendo as well as Playstation. Both have good and bad games. I had fun with Astros playroom and I was disappointed at the Astro Bot announcement because it has no VR2 support. But damn, this game is so good. Mario Odyssey was the best 3D platformer to me so far. Astro Bot is actually even better.

This was fun :) I didn't see if Peter saw the mechanic where if you start an already played level you have an optional single unlock floating bird thingy to help you find the rest of the secrets? That's a really nice implementation of that feature, I thought. A bit similar to the ring in Uncharted: Lost Legacy
