We are having our first Saturn return (21 April 1994, day of first democratic elections), and this in the wake of the ICJ court case and all of a sudden making it back onto the world stage. There are interesting themes surrounding reclaiming our identity as fighters for human rights and standing up against Apartheid. Excellent AI discussion intro. Agree with Austin. Art is about the artist, not the tools of art. Art will remain art, artists will still create it, but few will be able to live off their work. Creative markets are ruthless. So the audiences will grow less and less sophisticated in being able to differentiate between something conjured by a machine and a human being. The worth of human creativity. Art and artistry flagged that divide, so far. How this will then affect us in an evolutionary way, we'll see.

the problem with comparing AI generators and art created by artists to other forms of technological developments is the fact that current AI generators actively develop their databases by outright stealing people's work without their consent or compensation, so current AI does not stand on its own as an original technology, it leeches off of the current one while simultaneously decimating it off the market, adding insult to injury

The idea was that if art can be mechanized so can masses of people. He was a Jewish scholar who was actually pursued by Nazis. Most scholars thought he was wrong, because the U.S. dominated 20th century media and made advances on civil rights, but today that tension is once again front and center. I taught Benjamin for years, then took it off, and put it back in 2017.

If you haven’t seen it, I recommend giving it a watch and ponder. Aside from the brilliance in the writing, the show takes the viewer on a overlapping and cyclical, timeline sequence of the insidiously captivating & cocreative entanglement and development between humans and AI. It’s implosively befuddling and it simultaneously rewire your cognition as it short circuits your brain. Especially when you get to the final two seasons that are illustrating in “real life” precisely what you guys are positing. Thanks guys for everything you put out for us all.

I am so tired of dealing with machines. I side with Austin. I long for the day when I called a company and got a human on the phone and was able to ask them a question with out listening to a menu of possible reasons I am calling, none that really match, and then I am put on hold for 20+ minutes before I get a real live human to speak with. I do not use auto checkout at the store. I go to the gas station where the person still pumps the gas for me. But he does not wash my windows or check the oil like back in the day. I would never use a self driving taxi without a human in it. I converse with the taxi driver. As flawed as people are I want them in my life. Machines are much more flawed. As Sting said " I never saw no miracle of science that didn't go from a blessing to a curse"and added " never saw no military solution that didn't end up as something worse"

I can absolutely relate! Personally, I long for the days when people used to meet friends eye to eye or on the phone, when appointments were kept and real interpersonal relationships still had value. Today, you are interchangeable or invisible. You mustn't disturb the other person's me-time or quality time. Phone calls must be requested in writing in advance. You are one item on a checklist. People have long follower lists and yet there is still a lot of loneliness. At least that's how I feel.

A lot of this technology is very interesting. It's unfortunate that a key item on the cyberpunk dystopia checklist is late-stage capitalism. I'm concerned about how these technologies will be used to erode worker protections, consumer rights, and further deepen already extreme inequality. I believe the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year were able to secure some protections against being replaced by LLMs, and hopefully workers in other industries will take note and follow suit. I wonder how long it'll be before Apple and other competitors in VR/AR tech start selling people's environments as ad space.

OMG I was mindblown seeing a man with anthena plugged into his brain (at a conference). Took me some time to grasp what exactly I am seeing and hearing. Basically he did it because he is colour blind. The anthena translates colours into musical notes. He is also able to receive images sent to him throughout the world (and NASA, so he can hear the sound of the space). He also said that after meeting the King (Charles of the UK) he has gifted him with the music of his face. It's CRAZY

Oh, and to add to the above. There is allegedly a restaurant in Spain ( I believe he said Barcelona) where the owner/ cook has created a special musical menu. The person in question is then able to select his meal based on a song. The meals are served in a way that when he looks at them he hears the tune. That's just insane (in a good way)

1:00:24 Interestingly enough, Critical Role - a D&D group who were responsible for much of the popularity of the most recent edition of D&D - has within the last year released their own world building system Candela Obscura, which has more of a noir vibe. Not sure if it will revolutionize tabletop gaming but it checks the boxes for "new game system in the last year with Saturnian vibes." I anticipate there will be more new game systems too since the OGL debacle last year (open game license - they tried to restrict it), and now that there are rumours that Wizards of the Coast are scrapping 5th edition (their most popular edition ever) in favour of a 6th edition that is probably going to be a lot more restrictive for 3rd party content creators. 🤷‍♀️
