Apollo 13 Astronaut James Lovell talks about his Space Experiences during this Question and Answer session hosted by Physicist Brian Cox at the Space Lectures event in Pontefract.

Captain Lovell was selected as an Astronaut by NASA in September 1962. He has since served as backup pilot for the Gemini 4 flight and backup Commander for the Gemini 9 flight, as well as backup Commander to Neil Armstrong for the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission.
On December 4, 1965, he and Frank Borman were launched into space on the history-making Gemini 7 mission. The flight lasted 330 hours and 35 minutes and included the first rendezvous of two manned maneuverable spacecraft.
The Gemini 12 mission, commanded by Lovell with Pilot Edwin Aldrin, began on November 11, 1966. This 4-day, 59-revolution flight brought the Gemini program to a successful close. Lovell served as Command Module Pilot and Navigator on the epic six-day journey of Apollo 8 - man's maiden voyage to the moon - December 21-27, 1968. Apollo 8 was the first manned spacecraft to be lifted into near-earth orbit by a 7-1/2 million pound thrust Saturn V launch vehicle; and Lovell and fellow crewmen, Frank Borman and William A. Anders, became the first humans to leave the Earth's gravitational influence.
He completed his fourth mission as Spacecraft Commander of the Apollo 13 flight, April 11-17, 1970, and became the first man to journey twice to the moon. Apollo 13 was programmed for ten days. However, the original flight plan was modified en route to the moon due to a failure of the Service Module cryogenic oxygen system. Lovell and fellow crewmen, John L. Swigert and Fred W. Haise, working closely with Houston ground controllers, converted their lunar module "Aquarius" into an effective lifeboat. Their emergency activation and operation of lunar module systems conserved both electrical power and water in sufficient supply to assure their safety and survival while in space and for the return to earth.

Jim Lovell the man who deserves the most respect from all men because he was able to hold things together in a situation where most individuals would have failed and lost the entire crew of Apollo 13. I met the man in Las Vegas a few years ago when his book was first released, It was amazing that there were few at his booth so we got to spend time with him, I consider myself very lucky to have had that moment in time. Great man Jim Lovell...

Everyone gives Neil Armstrong the credit, but in some sense it was Jim Lovell , Borman and Anders that went to the moon first.

It’s sad to know we are losing all theses men. And no one will soon be alive that has walked on the moon. It’s such a waste to realize that with all that knowledge, it just stopped. We as a species should be so much further along.

upper cut I feel such pity for your poor unfortunate grandchild. I'm surprised a child spawned and raised by you actually managed to procreate, but now that the grandchild exists I can only feel sympathy, as it has an absolute nutjob as a grandparent. You're basically abusing your grandchild. I hope someday soon we can prosecute people like you. Damaging a child's mind during their upbringing is the worst offense.

7:25 -- you're disappointed in the direction the US space program IS GOING? Like, you aren't disappointed in the direction it WAS GOING when you flew Apollo 13? Everything following up had already been cancelled, all the Apollo hardware was about to be thrown in the trash, literally, and there was a politically-motivated space shuttle design guaranteed to fail... Why not be disappointed then? Nostalgia?

"Roger----r, please be advised, there is a Santa Clause" Famous line by Jim, why didn't somebody ask him exactly what he meant? Or How did you make it through the Van Allen belts? Or the most important one of all, did you guys really take Tang? I think Lovell is a man of Integrity and of all the remaining live astronauts still has all of his faculties unlike Aldren who is looking pretty bad and a bit kooky.

Listen closely to how Lovell answers B Cox. Everytime Cox asks Lovell a direct question about the moon mission he deflects away from the moon landing onto something else. Ex when asked about navigating to the moon Lovell starts talking about Lindberg. He never mentions anything about the process of navigation. This "deflecting" is the same trick Buzz Aldrin uses rather than talk about something that never happened.
