In 2015 I had the opportunity to meet Vic Glover at NASA's neutral Buoyancy laboratory.

He started straining 5 YEARS before the actual space walk, crazy to see that right now hes out there in space, working on the ISS.

The other week after eating at Taco Bell I started straining a good 2 days before the "launch", I can't imagine it taking 5 years.
@desmond-hawkins3 жыл бұрын
@@colinsouthern oh I can definitely relate, sometimes it does feel like trying to shoot an ICBM through a torpedo tube. But that Taco Bell experience was kind of different from that, more of a combination of high velocity and maximum fragmentation, without losing any of its lethality though.

As a recreational scuba diver, I would LOVE to dive in this pool and explore the mock-up is the ISS. I know I will never get to go to space, but that would be a reasonably close experience. Unfortunately, I have the same chance of doing that as I do going to space. Zero.

This is so cool. My first job after graduating from Iowa State, with a degree in civil engineering, was work for a big bridge contractor, here in Dallas, TX. 90% of what I did was structural engineering, designing formwork and shoring systems, critical beam lifts, etc. We put a bid in on excavating and building the giant swimming pool that became this lab. I remember working with our estimating department to develop work plans and formwork systems for the concrete placement. On a side note, at that time we did mot have any computers in our engineering department; everything was calced by hand and drawn on drafting tables. Things we can do now, in a matter of minutes, may have taken me a day of drawing shear and bending moment diagrams, running moment distributions, etc. on. 50 or 60 sheets of engineering paper! My HP 11C got so much use, some of the ink is worn off the buttons. So glad, though, that I earned my P.E. license in those days; I definitely learned a lot about problem solving.
