Very informative! A great start to this hobby. I was hoping for $2K but after looking at mounts, realized a higher budget will be needed. Or go with the Dwarf III or S50.

Very good! Yes, telescope is most important in rig building. It indeed defines all other parts.

Hmmm, actually the mount is the most important, then comes the telescope….for sure…👍🏻

Have the ASKAR 103 with all three correctors since last winter - such a great masterpiece!!!! But it would not deliver without a good mount, or without a good cam, or without good guiding

You mention losing a little bit of resolution when using a reducer due to stopping down the lens. Is that always the case? As far as I know with camera lenses, they generally have a focal sweet spot that is not always the widest aperture, for example an f/2 lens may be sharpest at f/2.8. Couldn't that also be true with telescopes? Or does using a reducer cancel that effect? Lifelong daytime photographer here. Great Series by the way. I am very glad to have found it before spending anything on new gear.

It is not so much about the stopping down, but introducing more glass - as with daytime photography the more glass elements a lens has - like a Zoom lens, the lower the quality of the picture. Reducers typically will introduce some distortion - but the amount depends on the scope resp. the reducer.

Another excellent video, perfect level for those of us just starting out down the rabbit hole 👍 BTW, if you are looking for some furniture give me a shout, I know a guy 😊

Sorry, spent all on telescopes, nothing left for furniture 🤣

Suggestion. You could divided telescope in three categories: glass only, glass and mirrors and mirrors only. The best are mirror only. Good Newtonians and other only mirror scopes are not cheap and will blow away any refractor.
@viewintospace4 ай бұрын
IF that would be true, also smaller focal length would be covered with mirrors and not glass. Given that is not the case, and we only use mirrors where glass would be too expensive or impractical because of weight/size, that kind of speaks against your statement.

Wait: are you suggesting that a telescope with a central obstruction and brackets to hold the secondary mirror produces a better image than a refractor? Physics says otherwise.

Could you get a camera rotator for your forked reflector so it will do equatorial tracking? I see Prima Luce makes what looks to be a good one( absolute novice talking).
@viewintospace4 ай бұрын
Yes, hypothetically you could…. But what is rather done it to either buy a wedge, which transforms it into an EQ mount, or to defork the scope and to move the OTA to a dedicated EQ mount. As these SCTs have very high focal lengths, it needs perfect guiding for good quality shots, which usually can only be achieved with dedicated EQ mounts. Everything else is a compromise.

@@viewintospace OK. Just put the question as I saw some Plane Wave Telescopes use a camera rotator on a forked mount.

My friend, what do you think of the Askar 71F Flat-Field APO Refractor Telescope 71mm f6.9 model?
@viewintospace4 ай бұрын
I think for the price you get quite a good value, as always with Askar. BUT, given the price is extremely low, you have to be aware that you can not expect an FRA series value.... First of all F6.9 is quite slow, and I hear the focuser is not of the best quality. But from an optical quality it seems to do very well. So at the end it depends on how much you want to spend. If 500mm is what you are looking for my first choice would be the FRA500, but the 71F might be a good compromise if you are looking for a budget option.
