@@KHJ4D stealing signs is stealing the pitching signs used by the other team. Its not illegal if done the traditional way. What made it illegal is the fact that the Astros used technology like TVs and cameras to steal the signs and signal them to the players in real time. That gives a significantly unfair advantage to them

@@KHJ4D great question,, but its not a simple answer. pitchers and catchers have hand signals that they use to communicate which pitch they are going to use to try to make the batter not hit the ball, or at least not hit it well. they have to be in agreement on what pitch the pitcher is going to use because the balls travel very fast and can move a lot, so the catcher needs to know what to expect. so, this is where it gets tricky. stealing signs isn't technically illegal in certain situations. if the batting team has a runner on second base (behind the pitcher) and he can see the signs, he can try to relay those to the batter so he knows whats coming. this is a pretty regular thing, and pitchers and catchers usually take steps to not let this happen via special signs, multiple signs...whatever. thats part of the game. but, the issue here, is that the astros were using a camera and letting EVERY batter know what pitch was coming. that goes above gamesmanship and enters into cheating. that is not part of the game.

As an Astros fan, this was heartbreaking to learn about. We had just went through hurricane Harvey that summer in 2017 and our homes were flooded and destroyed and everybody as a community was coming together and trying to get through all of it. Then we had the Astros in the playoffs and World Series, and it renewed this energy and hope from all the aftermath of Harvey. Then when they won it electrified the whole city and really brought joy and a sense we were all a part of a team in this together. Then later on to realize that it was all a scandal and know that they were actually cheating, and completely invalidate that hope that was renewed, was so disappointing. Y’all probably know a lot of Astro Fans are toxic and still defend their actions, but the majority of fans here in Houston are not that way. We’re just not as vocal because we’re working in this flat, polluted and over populated city with nothing to do but shop, eat food and drink alcohol. So I’m rooting for the Astros this year and hope they win square and fair. But I totally respect the Braves as well! Good luck and good vibes. 😎👍

Coming back to this a year later, its just heart breaking. I grew up in Houston, and have always been a big fan and gone to Astros games. 2017 was a dream come true for hundreds of thousands of fans, probably millions. Especially coming right after Harvey. Because they know the other team will easily pick up on them if they didn't. They literally change the signs from game to game. I've seen in pointed out that you don't even need special technology, they show the signs on t.v. and the jumbo tron. They also show how the pitcher is gripping the ball. I'm a Cardinals fan and I think it's funny that the Astros turn out to be just as big at cheating. When someone left the Cardinals for the Astros he left behind all his passwords. Something else had to be up. Trash can banging is so loud and ridiculously obvious. Other teams would've heard and exposed that immediately. High school coaches would pick up on this shit within an inning or two let alone MLB players, coaches and staff. Baseball teams are filled with guys that just try to decode what the other team is doing all game. Can't imagine how quickly it would've been figured out at the Major League level. Something was going on but I don't think we know exactly what. I think the banging was just a distraction or a tiny part of the whole operation.
