Once was in the room with someone, watching them play online. And one of their dogs kept stepping over or around his controller cord over and over, giving us anxiety, and just when we thought "this good dog, always so careful, so unlike other dogs!" And then looked at us after stepping through, happy - butt facing the console. And their wagging tail caught the cord and pulled it out. And I don't even need to affirm this is a true story, as other rambunctious-pet-owning gamers can also attest to similar ones.😅

This and many other melee desyncs are caused by something called "undefined behavior", which usually happens when programs are told to look for data in a space where no data has been placed. When this happens the program will use whatever random was in that space before instead, aka "garbage". With Fox's tail, it appears the developers didn't notice the problem since the garbage was close enough to what they wanted the real value to be, so it was never fixed. With netplay the glitch is more problematic, where if both Fox tails start up with different garbage values then from the very beginning there is actually, technically no consensus on which client is running the correct version of the match. The fix is to create a game code patch that forces both clients to set the garbage values to the same thing at match start. That way Fox's tail will always have a defined state that neither client will ever disagree about. The Slippi devs are basically defining a small amount of melee's logic themselves because the original devs forgot!

Funny enough, that happens a lot in Fightcade. I fight someone online and I'm beating them into a pulp, however on the other side, my opponent would be doing the same thing as if I wasn't even playing the game. Then a message would pop up saying that a desync happened and we would have to exit the game and re-match just to try again and hope it doesn't happen again. Happens rarely thankfully, but it still happens nonetheless.
