Aha! I love this comment. I've done a few Blender benchmark tests on a few cards, but didn't know if they've be on value to anyone. Let me know if there are any other productivity products you'd like me to benchmark. Blender has a lovely benchmarking tool, which is so easy to use. I'm finishing up an Asus Strix 4070 Ti video right now and I wasn't going to test it in Blender.. interesting enough, the results were incredible compared to some other 4070 Ti's. Thank you and appreciate any feedback/recommendations.

@@JohnLCharette Yeah most of 3d artists use programs like Blender, Arnold Renderer, Substance Painter and we are struggling finding true information on how the hardware works in this programs. For me a gpu performance in games is useless. I buy hardware for productivity

had same red light problem asus told me it is because its conected with the adaptor dongle. Once i bought the new cable from seasonic light is gone :)

Yes! I've done some reading and came across similar information. My understanding is that if there's a red light, it means your 12v connector is not connected properly. I think this is their way to help combat the melting connectors issue.

ok the red light is if the power cable is not in properly or not in at all. thats what they used to put in there quick user guide before. hope this helps

Yes! You are absolutely correct. Since that video, I did some research and that's exactly what it's for. If the red light is on, it means the 12v cable isn't connected properly or at all. It's a safety mechanism. Appreciate the information and I've pinned it for others to learn as well :)

Asus support: "The RED LED is not an issue in a powered off state, as it simply means that not enough power is being delivered to the graphics card, which in a turned off state is definitely the case. Due to many customers sharing concerns on that, the LED in a turned off state is to be fixed through the next software. Please standby for the latest software updates for your Graphics Card."

I was able to get a Suprim X (air) 4090 at canada computers for $2199+Ontario HST. I couldn't resist given the price (which I think was a pricing error at that location and they honored it). It's a great card. Really nice to look at and is whisper silent without any coil whine.

@John Charette fractal design Define 7xl. The case is wonderful. It has space for not only a Blu ray drive but a full 360 mm aio on top, 2 140mm fans on the front, but the 4090 with tons of space to spare. It's not an airflow monster but it is quiet and super versatile.

I recently got the 4080 TUF and installed it in my Corsair Crystal 570X - never thought i'd see the day i would be worried anything would NOT fit in that case. Still, when it came to the power adapter cable, i opted to connect the 3 PCIe cables to the adapter first, and sort of gently pre-bend the adapter cable by hand before plugging it in the GPU. Was so paranoid about putting too much undue stress on that new 12-pin power connector.

Ohh yeah, these 4080/4090s are BIG ;) Congrats on the new card. Those Corsair Crystal cases are gorgeous. I haven't had the chance to work with one yet, but I see them pop up on the auction site I follow. As for the power connector, I'm glad it working well. I would recommend looking into a dedicated 12v cable. What kind of power supply do you have?

@@JohnLCharette PSU is a Corsair HX850 80+ Plat; still running an 8700K so next to upgrade would be CPU+Mobo+RAM+PSU. Will definitely get an updated PSU with a dedicated 12v cable then.

@@ggpaul562 Yep the 4080 and 4090 TUF have the same size, the 4090 just has more fins w/in the same frame. Should fit your 570x well :) BTW i've since changed cases to the NZXT H6 Flow, and it still fits quite well

I've got the asus tuf 4090 oc running on AM5 with a Seasonic Vertex 1200 watt gold psu (GX-1200)... The coil whine in the beginning was pretty unreal, but after a few weeks of gaming, it seems to have decreased a little bit, plus, maybe I've gotten better at ignoring it, maybe. LOL! But I do believe it's gotten a bit quieter for the most part as time goes on. For me it's not a deal breaker, as I mainly game with headphones or high speaker volume, but for the money I paid for that video card it was a bit disheartening initially. And then when I see just how gorgeous this card makes all my favorite games look with insane frame rates, and it really does... And at that point, I forgive any and all noises that it makes. The graphics this thing puts out at 4K is just stunning. Plus, other than the rtx 4080... The rest of the 40 series is an over priced joke if you ask me.

That's really interesting to hear that the coil whine decreases. I may have experienced the same thing with the Eagle OC 4080 that I had. I swear it was louder when I first got it. I definitely noticed it was game dependent. It sounds like you have a really solid system and you should be pretty happy with it :)

Yo Bro you can not use 2 8pin connectors from 1 cable you need 4 separate cables to connect your GPU to the GPU splitter cable. Thats the more save way to connect your GPU

I have this exact 4090 and I'm using a Silverstone Hela 850R PSU with the ATX3 power cable. I've also undervolted it to 0.825V @ 2400Mhz. I was very surprised at how efficient the architecture is. Power consumption dropped 40-45% from stock. (Yes, almost cut in half) Temperatures including hotspot never go over 50'C and I've barely lost much performance at all. Really happy with my results. And no coil whine issues - in fact the card is so quiet if the logo wasn't lit up, I wouldn't know it was even on. lol

@@JohnLCharette mine has coil whine but so did all Asus 30 series, it’s no worse than my Strix 3080ti, coil whine does not bother me much and from what I understand comes with the territory these days, it is reduced when I lower the power limit slightly, cheers, tricks and tips are always good!

XD I already got an email from BestBuy though, stating that it will be "delayed". lol Faith is already shaken. Good god, BestBuy is terrible lately. Looked up issues with BestBuy cancelling orders out of nowhere, and found many people in USA and CAN dealing with cancelled 4090 orders in particular. Pretty sure these ship out of Mississauga area, so shouldn't take too long to arrive, if that's the case. I will be mounting it vertically, as I actually use the PCI-e slots on my mobo for a SAS card and a capture card. Mounting it in the slot, would eat up all my slots. If the OC isn't satisfying Id personally flash it with the Strix Bios and see what that does. Also try GPU tweak 3 instead of afterburner

Huh, I hadn't considered flashing it with a Strix BIOS. I haven't tried out GPU Tweak 3, but my understanding is that it's the same thing. Have you noticed any performance differences when using one over the other?

@@JohnLCharette with the Strix Bios the default OC is naturally more aggressive. I managed to get it stable with 100% fans at 3065mhz on the core and 1200 on the memory. But that could also be silicon lottery.

Yes, you can absolutely use a TUF 4090 with only 3x8pin connectors. It will limit the power draw to 450w from the card, which doesn't affect performance too much. I was using an EVGA 1300w in that system when I recorded that video. I have since switched back to a Corsair RM1000X and have an EVGA 1000w I'm waiting to use on a Threadripper build. Which PSU do you have?

@@JohnLCharette I ordered the adapter from seasonic instead it much better and cleaner. It's only a 850 watts but its a Seasonic 80+ Platinum. Focus Plus modular and with it's compact size it's gonna help for space. I know its gonna stress the psu but with a 9900k its gonna be enough. Temporary as I will build a new system later on. Rgb are all off also.

Between this tuf model and gigabyte gaming oc model which one would you choose? I love the gigabyte but I'm concerned about the PCB breaking on gigabyte cards. I know if i use antisag i would be able to avoid that but the antisag on gigabyte cards are not compatible with all cases so I don't know how to check that online

Personally, I’d go with the TUF card. The only consideration is that it’s probably thicker than the Gigabyte, so just make sure you have room in your case. It also includes two HDMI ports and has great water block compatibility, if you ever choose to water cool your GPU.

They should have very similar performance seeing as use the same GPU core. I don’t worry about 3-5%. That’s hardly noticeable and will change even testing the same card.

@@JohnLCharette And a lot of it is silicon lottery so even though it's not that important, it still is possible to have a card that is better from the get go or better in overclocking. But i figured another thing! There are two tuf models. One of them is TUF OC which is this one. The other one is TUF OG OC which is a lot cheaper and a lot worse. I mean a lot. The PCB of that card is from the 3090ti TUF, the thermals are worse by at least 10 degrees so 80 plus degrees all the time! And for water-cooling you couldn't do it by a 4090 block because the PCB reference design of tuf og oc is different.

I have the Strix 4090. I have massive coil whine in menus, but when gaming and the frame rates drop to lower numbers, it's not remarkable anymore. So for me, only gaming in 4k, it's fine. I think at 1080p with high fps, it's annoying as hell.

Interesting. I'm wondering if you could test something for me - I don't have a 4090 in the studio anymore. Could you enable Gsync and limit your frame rate to the hertz of your monitor 100-120hz (whatever it is)? That might prevent your FPS jumping to 500+ fps in menus, limiting the coil whine. Let me know if that helps.

​@@JohnLCharette Sure, your welcome! No need to test it further more. I have my new setup since a month and made some experience now. Always depends on the factors: game, fps, GPU frequency and load. For example Mafia 3 synced @138hz: 1000FPS in menu@1100Mhz GPU -> no coil whine at all 138fps in-game -> slightly coil whining Sniper Elite 5 synced @138hz: 138fps in menu -> slightly coil whining 138fps in-game -> slightly coil whining CS:GO not synced: 138 fps in menu -> slightly coil whining 460 fps in-game -> my cat leaves the room When fps >200 and 100% GPU load (I reduced the power target to 70% btw) come together, the card gets really annoying. BUT I have to say thing got better over time. When I finished building my PC one month ago and ran 3Dmark I was on the brink to send the card back. I have the subjective feeling that it got better. Anyway, the coil whining of my 4090 Strix OC is the loudest part of my system and I have a 13900K to cool and another 8! fans (incl. PSU) in my Y40 case.

I would think that both come with a 4x8pin adapter and that it uses the exact same BIOS as the OC version - allowing 450/600w. From what I understand, the only thing that changes with OC & non-OC is that the non-OC's GPU isn't binned as high. Corsair RM1000x power supply. I've heard the same thing, but I've tested multiple 1000+ watt power supplies without any change with coil whine. I think it comes down to the components on the GPU.

Yes sir. The card will automatically limit the power draw to 450w, which decreases the performance by a 5-10%, which isn't too bad.

No probs everyone to there own but for me syncing the Rgb on my 4090fe looks better and matches perfect to my fans cooler and ram never had any issues with icue so far hopefully stays that way for me armoury crate lighting was hit and miss when it worked

I prefer Asus over Gigabyte, all day long. I had a bad experience with Gigabyte with the 3000 series and they haven’t earned by trust back. I have used the Gigabyte Eagle 4080 and it was a solid card, but I’d still buy an Asus TUF instead. That being said, the 4000 series TUF cards have been known to have a lot of cool whine, so beware. It may not bother some, if your case is well sealed. Let me know which you end up getting.

@@JohnLCharette see that was my issue, i see alot about how the asus has tons of coil whine. meanwhile the gigabyte cards seem to be the best against it with little to none at all.

i have not got the ASUS yet but my friend has the card and says there is a bit there. I have heard something strange that with asus motherboardds the coil whine is less or cant be heard at all. Buiiding a pc today is just strange.

I build with pretty much only Asus motherboards and I still get coil whine. I've heard some people say the power supply also makes a difference. I have yet to confirm that. Agreed. PC building is strange ;) Good luck!

@Eric please say more about power supplies resolving issues with coil whine. This is the first I’ve heard of this solution. I’m currently using a Corsair RM1000x power supply. What power supply do you recommend for a TUF 4090?

@@JohnLCharette I’m not sure it has much to do with your psu. I used to use a TUF 3070 Ti which had unbearable amounts of coil whine. I recently switched to a xfx black 7900 xt and there is 0 coil whine. The psu (evga 850w gold 80+) is not to blame for my situation and if other 4090s don’t have the same coil whine it might just be your TUF 4090. Some cards are known (and avoided) because of their coil whine.

Causes for Capacitor whine, order of the list does not denote frequency list. #1. Poor quality capacitors try to pull/supply more power than what they are rated for. Vibration/Noise then occurs, or the connection to the PCB from the CAP is not good or too small diameter. Solution RMA the card. #2. Power supply 4/6/8 pin power leads or extension cables have smaller diameter copper wire than required to supply the AMPs requested by the Capacitor, cause Caps to vibrate and make noise. Solution need better cables. #3. PSU top rating just barely meets specs or is on the bleeding edge and usually includes example #2 as part of the issue. Most common solution is BETTER PSU that is rated as I have said, with proper diameter cables. In any case a good PSU with at least 100 to 150 watts higher than system draw requirements and good diameter leads, usually fixes things. If that doesn't do it, manually adjust FAN curve lower so the fans do not pull additional power, undervolt the GPU or send it back to the manufacturer. For a 4090 GPU, I would make sure Whatever PSU is chosen in 1000 to 1500 watt range has sufficient AMPs and sufficient diameter PCIe leads. Electricity is easy, only so much can run through a CAP per it's rating and wire diameter can only handle so much power. It's all 2+2 and not Rocket Science.

@@JCrispG Did you read my other reply..?? It's in this chain and several examples are given. Electricity is easy, I mean really easy. When AMPs are concerned and there is a failure or coil whine, there are really only 3 or 4 reasons. PERIOD BUT, since 2006 it has come down to PSU components not being up to snuff or capacitors trying to pull/supply to the GPU BEYOND what they are rated for or poor connectivity to the PCB or lack of material to support the flow without vibrations, which is directly related to what I have already said in terms of Diameter of the wires/path of the Electricity// Real easy math. That includes the FAN(S).

I try to but usually end up losing a couple hundred. I chalk it up as a business expense loss. Are you implying I sell them for more than retail? Stock is becoming a lot better, so scalpers aren't able to make as much money as a few months ago. Either way, I'm not into ripping people off that way.
