After changing anything in Manual mode in Armory crate and applying your settings, you will need to re-apply your settings in Afterburner because the ASUS GPU settings will overwrite them. I made this video for the M15, but really you can use Afterburner and QuickCPU on almost any gaming laptop!

@@masiv1231 yo, I fixed the problem. Make sure in the settings tab at the very top, you have open on startup, minimise to system tray and leave open in background (or something similar) also make sure to create a new profile, (found right of the settings tabs you used earlier) name it and then press apply. After this on the column on the right with all the changes displayed press apply there asswell and un check the buttons with the settings you dont want changed in the pop up window that will appear. Save, close and restart laptop. Done. Also if you changed any settings in armoury crate, go into after burner and re apply there as otherwise the laptop will override it and use armoury crate instead. Hope that helps and if you need any more help let me know :) This saved my ass dude. £2000 laptop and reaching 80°c on csgo lol. Now I'm at max settings on every game at around 60-70. Your videos are seriously underrated. Just one tip, please don't be afraid to over explain steps. I spent a long time slamming my fists on my desk trying to figure out how you moved every point on the voltage curve with one motion. I ended up first trying to move each point individually. Then I tried drag selecting, shift clicking each point (didn't work), then I tried taking a break and coming back... still couldn't figure it out... Had to lookup another video on setting up fan curves specifically... where the guy spent TOO much time explaining steps and after 4 minutes of watching a non moving screen and listening to ramblings... I get the answer, hahaha. It's funny how there is a fine balance between over-explaining and giving the needed information. I think you are very close! Thank you so much for all your help. You encouraged me to check out this open box M15 for $1100 and get it 100% working. Because honestly, these things run rough out of the box... I can see why this guy returned his. My gain :D

This was fantastic, thank you sir! I went from running at a consistent burn-my-hands-through-the-keyboard 95-100 degrees (CPU with cooling pad) to sustained turboing at 78-82 degrees. My 3DMark score stayed between 7,000-7,100 both before and after with about a 30 point improvement after I turned everything down. I'm thinking this is because I could turbo for the duration without any thermal throttling??? In any case, DRAMATICALLY better thermals and dB without any measurable performance delta. Worth noting that I didn't adjust GPU performance at all and it ran consistently at 80-85 degrees (I'll play around with these settings later). CPU turbo set to 3.8Ghz and minimum at 1.6Ghz. 75 volt offset on CPU. 35 & 40 watt respectively in QuickCPU.
@TechWithSean
@TechWithSean 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah many laptops actually get better performance if you tune them down just below the throttling line. This has some shared heat pipes too, so if the CPU goes real hot, it will impact the GPU and that will throttle more also. Plus if the CPU is drawing less power, I think it can push more to the GPU on this machine because of Max Q Dynamic Boost. Thanks for watching ✌️

Hey Sean! My M15 started to have a way slower overall performance, even BSODing when changing the Armory Crate's modes, and unfortunately I've been doing a lot of software changes lately and gotten a bunch of Windows updates and NVIDIA updates in a really short time, so I couldn't notice the exact moment in which this started to happen, in order to track the issue... I would like to know if you got the latest drivers, especially maybe the Nvidia ones, and had a similar issue. I'm still troubleshooting but it's getting hard. And a stupid question, is it possible that if the laptop has been dropped, this could be the consequence? Thanks again a lot for you video, I find myself always coming back to watch it as a basic guide haha

Thank you so much for this video. I just bought my m15 and was worried I was going to have to return it due to the extreme spikes in temp. Your video helped tremendously. Baldur's gate 3 is running well and I haven't even noticed an appreciable drop in performance. Temps are maxing out around high 70's/low 80's. Do you think replacing the thermal paste is worth it? I've read that the QC on such things has been lacking.
@TechWithSean

Glad it is helping! I definitely would not replace the thermal paste. This years ROG laptops are using liquid metal on the CPU out of the factory, which should outperform paste. 70s/80s are good temps for a gaming laptops, it’s a totally different ball game than desktop parts.

[RESULTS AT END OF POST] First of all, I’d like to say that I have this laptop & I absolutely love it for gaming & heavy load data analysis. HOWEVER, it does have some heating issues out of the box, which this video helped me deal with quite a bit. After messing around with these tips from the vid, I found the most efficient settings for performance & temperature control(IMO). (1) Go into the BIOS & Offset voltage 70-75(like in video) WHILE IN BIOS, disable Hyper-Threading. (2) In ArmouryCrate, select the manual fan mode & set it so the fans hit 100% above 68deg.(mostly for heavy gaming) (3) IMPORTANT Go into Control Panel > System/Security > Power Opt > Change plan settings > Advanced Power settings > Process Pow. Manage. > Boost mode = disable (The turbo function of the laptop is what makes the temp so high & I’ll explain performance is actually improved w/o it) (4) The Fun Part. Get MSI afterburner; now instead of lowering the curve & creating a straight line, raise the entire curve so that the lowest/left point is now at 1450-1500 instead of 1300. Keeping the same shape as the original curve. (Because Boost is disabled, you are able to Overclock the gpu while still being below the ridiculous level with turbo boost) SIDE NOTE & RESULTS I use a cooling pad & all high performance gaming laptops should. With the fans from the laptop & the pad, it is loud. But if you have a headset you’ll never know. If a game has the option, I select Adaptive Vsync to make the games smoother can reduce temp. RESULTS Using Apex & CSGO as examples(almost all settings on high), out of the box they both had high fps(~130 and ~180 respectively) but the GPU & CPU were steady at 93+ degrees. NOW, Apex runs at 150-160fps, CSGO runs at 180fps+ & both games have the same temps of GPU at 75-80, CPU at 82-85. I know this was long & Ty to any who read the whole thing, I’m just trying to help y’all so you don’t have to spend the hours of trial & error like me lol.

Genuine Question: Is this just focused towards user's comfortability on use such as Heat and Noise or is it also beneficial for the laptop's hardware in the long run? Because for me personally, i dont mind the heat or the noise. im more so worried that it could potentially damage my laptop. I have the M15 with 2070 Max Q and running and playing Warzone everyday on Ultra high settings for 6 plus hours a day, i'd see my GPU temp @ 86 C steadily. idk if thats okay for the system for long amounts of time thats why i'm here looking for some thoughts from you guys.

I ended up getting one that had a bad left fan. It would start to spin up and bounce up and down shaking the chassis. The laptop vibrated so bad. Fps was terrible due to thermals but if you use turbo mode with 100% fan speed, it went up 30% in performance.

Hi Sean! I am currently running an 80 mV undervolt and I have already limited the turbo up to 3.8 GHz, however, I'm not quite understanding how the power limits work. (Clamp limit 1 and clamp limit 2). My quickCPU menu shows both at 135 W (I would assume that's the default value) and only clamp limit 1 appears selected. Could you please develop a bit more in terms of explaining this feature? I assume its the power that is given to the CPU, but i'm not quite sure on why there's two categories and which should be referential values. Also, does lowering power (as volts) have zero impact on performance, or it does?? thanks!!!

Hi Sean, thanks again for the video. Qquestion: How could I enable or disable the fn actions keys? For instance, I want to increase the screen brightness with F8 without pressing FN key at the same time. Thanks in advance!!

I poked around but unfortunately I don;t see any options to do that in the BIOS or Armory Crate. You could try a third-party app like Autohotkey to set it up to work as a single button press, though.

Hey i also have a M15 with same i7 10750 but with a GTX 1660ti.. ive done one RESET of this LAPTOP since ive owned it and started over... what are considered normal temps in games? i use armory crate to check temps and it says im getting around mid 70s and about an hour in game its in 80s.. most games i play meet the recommended requirements usually by a long shot. the only game that i play thats barely meeting recommended is COD COLD WAR and never get frame drops... is that too hot? ive seen it hit 90 a few times too.. this laptop is about 5 months old and i dont have a best buy warrantee.. will the 1 year manufacturer from ASUS hold me down??? My goal is get the max fps possible in first person shooters like Escape from tarkov. when i first played the game i was getting almost 100 fps all the time now it wont break past low 60s.... LUL plz help. LOVE THE VID, like and subbed btw :)

This laptop is you want the best bang for the buck (on the sale), Aero if you want an OLED, or Blade 15 if you just want a Razer. (The Razer OLED option is good too, but I think is more expensive than the Aero)

They should be extremely similar in performance hardware-wise. Same CPUs/GPUs etc. I think this 240hz M15 has a bit better screen though, and personally I like the aesthetics more than the razer snake logo stuff. It also has better speakers than the Blade 15 does

I think QuickCPU will keep the settings, but you;ll have to re-apply the MSI Afterburner settings after changing stuff in Armory Crate because it will overrride them

Have you had any “rattle” sound issues with the fans on the M15? I had one of my fans faintly rattle for a couple of minutes until I cycled it into performance mode for a few minutes and then back into silent mode. Rattle went away and haven’t had in about an hour of use afterwards. The rattle was at about 2800RPM fan speed per the armory crate. Any thoughts on this? Just afraid it might be foreshadowing.

Was it the fan itself rattling for sure? I thought it had a rattle, but turned out the speakers were vibrating the USB stick that I had plugged in!
@Sasquatch18

Tech With Sean about %95 it was the fan or at least a by product of the fan operating. When using the labtop, it was the right side fan. I did notice that when I picked up the and tilted it side to side the noise went away. But when I placed it back down the noise returned until I ran the fans at high speed for a few minutes and then it went away. It was a faint noise, but it was there. I guess I’ll see if I can duplicate it soon and go from there. Thanks for the reply so quick! Sub’d!!

This video is awesome man! I just recently bought this laptop, and the noise/heat is insane so having this guide on turning it down helped immensely, thank you. I have a somewhat related question. I've setup the manual profile in Armoury Crate for the fan curves like you have, but when I don't have the laptop plugged in it forces the profile into the "Performance" profile so the manual curves are gone, and it says "This mode is currently unavailable on your PC" when I try to put it back to the manual profile. Is there a way to stop this that isn't uninstalling Armoury Crate that you know of?
@TechWithSean

I don’t think that Turbo or Manual profiles are options on battery power because they require more power than it can deliver without the AC adapter. On battery I use the “windows” plan typically.
