sometimes i know from schematics sometimes i know from datasheet of ic, sometimes simply knowledge . and sometimes it is a experimental operation :)

Do you need a special multimeter to see if current goes through in "pass"? How do you know where to put the ends to test that also?

current like 0,5A or less i ise ampmeter. current Bigger than 0,5A i use simply meter in my dc supply. as for where put test ends... i have a knowledge and i know that ic like bios there is 3,3V or less for example.... so there is a standard points on pcb where You can put power for test purposes. or if You do not know where just buy schematics for laptop and then You know for sure.
