I just purchased the smaller version of this, the Zenbook 14 Pro (UX6404) and agree with sentiments both bad and good. I don't use the dial at all, USB-C and Thunderbolt are limited to 100w which is a bummer considering Thunderbolt 4 is potentially capable of 240w, and you need to go into Asus' app to dim the screen below a threshold if you don't want PWM. I also did a clean install of Windows 11 Pro to get rid of the Adobe/Glide X/bloatware and get some Pro features. Having said this I freaking love this little laptop. Very snappy, takes a lot to get the fans going in my use cases, nice and light/compact, it only costs $1,800 for an i9-13000H/4060 and on my model the RAM and storage are upgradable so I purchased a 32GB SO-DIMM for $40 vs Apple's $400. Perfect for dual-4K monitor setup at the desk or working remote.

I just looked into this laptop because it does offer some things I am interested in. But for our Canadian market this thing, with slightly different configuration (1Tb SSD), starts at CAD $4500, so it is definitely more expensive than my M2 MAX with similar specifications, and that is before another whopping 13% of taxes, which makes this CAD $5k price range, which is insane for a laptop.

I looked into this a few weeks ago. I could be wrong. I dont remember the name of the chips but the chip its using isnt the type of chip you would need to get the full performance out the 4080. It would perform more like a 4060. I remember i looked up Geekbench scores and cinebench and it performed worse than a 4070. gaming laptop. So im pretty sure the 4080 is just marketing. I wish it could perform like a 4080 laptop. If it could i would get it.

Thanks for the balanced review Josh. I have several ASUS devices and in general they've been trouble free, but sometimes the innovations can be a nuisance. I've got a ZenBook S15 that uses the trackpad as a second screen, and in my experience the novelty wore off quickly so I turned it off. However, we've been using it for over 4 years (it's my wife's laptop now) and it has been completely reliable.

Awesome review as always. This laptop seems okay and all, but the biggest problem with Asus is their atrocious website, details, and their stocking methods. Whatever they are doing, they are trying their absolute hardest to not stock these things properly with the above specs mentioned regardless of when it is available, and the details, verbiage etc. is always a mixed bag, correct in some areas of the website, wrong/dated in other areas. Everywhere you look you find the newer or the older version with mixed information, even the rarely stocked retailers. Basically, I wouldn't purchase from Asus, ever, because they can't even get their website or details correct/clear. They are a giant mess and it doesn't instill confidence in their business practices or quality. I think I'll stick with the Lenovo Legion series for the foreseeable future.

Great review!! Would love to see a few game/graphics benchmarks but I get it’s a creator-focused machine. Also, people don’t understand the upfront cost it takes to purchase your own devices to review, so I think these types of disclosed yet still critical reviews are amazing. It allows for more information to be out there that may not have been otherwise, and more growth (and less debt) for you. Good stuff!

Also to the people complaining about the price of this thing, he’s very obviously comparing to the price of similar spec machines, which are all higher or have worse features. This thing has a nearly-full wattage 4080 in it at 160w!! That’s 70 more watts than they originally advertised. And more than Asus’ actual gaming-focused Zephyrus M16. And it’s $100 cheaper! With an OLED panel too. That’s just insane. Definitely waiting for that buy link cause I might have to pick this thing up!

I just purchased this exact laptop. I could not find it with the highest cpu, gpu and ram anywhere for a couple days. I finally found one on amazon, and it was the last one they had. it cost 3,800+ dollars which it is compared to the MacBook Pro with M2 or M3 by now. Everything I have right now are Apple devices for several years. The reason I'm having to purchase this one is because I purchased a new commercial drone for my work and the software it takes to format is not compatible with Apple. :/. I ordered it because you helped me decide with your review. I know that Razer Blade and Alienware and MSI are outer but I just don't feel like paying over 5K for work. Thanks for your very informative reviews.

It appears Asus is having issues getting this particular model to market. Announced in January, sites are saying expected release in November (delayed from September ETA). Unless this is currently available through limited channels it may be dead on arrival if or when it does. With 14th Gen models and newer GPUs on the horizon, this is a major letdown. The RTX 4070 model is available in the $2600 range but lacks the Supernova SoM and faster RAM.

I order the Slim 7 Gen 8 maxed out, 2 weeks ago, super simple. I'm still waiting for it to come in, but after 25+ hours of research on every angle regarding laptops for creators and gaming, they seem to be the best by far. I can't be bothered with Asus' awful website, and their inability to stock retailers, or even their own website. Honestly, just go take a look and see if that's someone you want to purchase from vs Lenovo, etc. Asus' details are so mixed up and conflicting (click on notify me, or where to buy), the information they give is a mess for me personally and doesn't clearly explain when or where to get their hardware. Not really interested in buying from a company like that.

In your Windows laptop reviews that include devices with 4050 or 4060 dedicated gpus you should be using Davinci Resolve in your reviews. Davinci takes advantage of the Nvidia hardware. If it wasn't for the dedicated Nvidia cards I'd recommend Macbooks every time...but ...well...there are devices with dedicated GPUs that perform better than Apple silicon...and not just for gaming. And most can be had for under $2k with 32gb ram/1tb ssd and thunderbolt ports. Just a suggestion.

The circle pad thing is niche at best, will have me selecting a different laptop because I don't want to look at it every day at worst. The keyboard layout needs to be completely reworked to make more sense. On a 16" laptop that is inexcusable. I'm not saying it needs a real numpad, just give me closer to TKL plz.

The dial's location is great - I feel you picked on that due to a bias you already have regarding the need for a dial. Asus seriously missed a trick with their selection of creator laptops; the StudioBook should've at least had an option for a 4080 gpu, while the ZenBook-with a 4080-needs a max ram of 64GB (not soldered). Otherwise, good review overall. Keep it up 👍🏽

My Asus laptop also had the issue of screen going after pulling the charger out but after an update its been fine, also the numpad has always been responsive even though I have a cheaper laptop than this one.

The screen flashing black when unplugged is it switching the refresh rate to 60 Hz to save battery. You can disable this behavior in the Asus control software.

Hey Josh excellent review! Just wanted to know if you were notified by asus when this would be going on sale? I've seen some other computer stores offering it also for preorder but for exact same configuration charging upwards of 3300-3600$ on sites like adoroma and excalibur pc. Asus US website is only selling previous generation as of now. Thanks and again great review

As always, I love your reviews, Josh! Choosing the right laptop is such a difficult task for me, and I keep bouncing nack and forth from a 14.5" form factor and a 16" one. This laptop just looks absolutely amazing! It literally has everything I could want. However, it is only available in the 4070 version where I live. Do you think that will be worth the money? Especially considering how the 4070 isn't really able to take advantage of any wattage above 100? I'd love your two cents on the matter, and also on the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i, 14.5" with 4070 vs the Asus Zenbook 14 Pro OLED, also with 4070. And how do you think either of those laptops will compare to this one with thte 4070?

I am not an expert in ergonomics, but i felt it was totally fine, and similar to the keyboard angle that some of my laptop stands provide. I have used those stands for years with no issue

I've done an extensive review on the current one that is available Intel 13th gen 13.5 inch display. The AMD 13.5inch and the 16inch I am getting in, but they are not available yet.

@@JustJoshTech that is true. accidentally, I am right now using the Asus ProArt Studio Book 13980hx. similar concept but the dial is more pronounced/deeper. I found it useful in resolve, but only for frame to frame cuts. I agree with you for fast scrolling is not that useful. I just wish this came with RTX 4070 (it comes with the 4060 and it is just borderline "pro".

@@JustJoshTech In the UK it is well over $4000 for the i9/4070/1TB/32GB/13-gen. So I am surprised about the price of $2600 as I checked a few other countries and it is no where near that cheap!

Ah, one is a 10 run (either average or the last run) while the other is a single run. Sorry, didn’t notice the legend. With 11k for the 10-run, it’s as fast as a single-run ultra book so your statement stands true. Thanks for the prompt reply and transparency!
