That bear was a native skinwalker. There are two different kinds of skinwalkers. The witch doctors / creatures who spread death and disease. These are the skinwalkers that we usually hear about. The other type is a Native American protector that has inherited the ability to turn into that creature like a werewolf but from the old gods. These Walkers tend to be just as dangerous but only attack for good reason. When Europeans showed up in the Americas, they couldn’t keep the names straight and the idea merged into one, even though they are very very different.

I don't normally comment, but in the story Creature on the Dark Road, I've seen that woman myself. She's not bound to one area. I saw her in my grandparents house. She is a demon. When I saw her, she had a deformed creature with her. She was pointing at me with her mouth open as if she was screaming, but I didn't hear anything and her eyes were either black or her sockets were empty.

It's actually the Mark Twain national Forest, not park, and ironically enough I am heading there right now....and I guarantee you (the character there) do not go deeper into that forest than I do..... Oh well, time to see if I get chased out by some orbs flying through the trees again, and yes that really did happen. I had something follow me about 10 miles through the woods when I was on foot and when I made it back to the car it followed along next to me-it staying within the treeline- up to about 50mph or so for about another 3-4 miles. There are some spooky places down there.
